Take a walk inside the Big Bang

by Mark R

Thanks to modern movies, most of us have seen way too many explosions. Of course, very few films have attempted to show us what it looks like to be inside of an explosion.

A Chinese sculptor named Zhan Wang is trying to show the inside of an explosion with this sculpture that you see here, entitled My Personal Universe. In looks like Wang is trying to show us what it might be like to be in the biggest explosion of all, the Big Bang.

In order to inspire his creation, Wang actually blew up an actual boulder and filmed it with six high-definition video cameras in different locations at about 2,000 frames per second. From there, he was able to hang about 5,000 realistic steel boulders to create this awesome effect.

Giant Spider Web created from packing tape and plastic tubes

by Mark R

In case you were worried that Shelob, the giant terrifying spider from The Lord of the Rings, was in this art installation, allow me to relieve your arachnophobia.

What you are seeing here is an artificially made web that is not made for the next Spider-man movie (coming this summer). I’m not certain what the webs from the Spider-man films are made of, but this web is made from long, hollow tubes and packing tape.

The purpose of this faux spider web is to create a gigantic bounce house or jungle gym for adults. There is a video after the jump if you want to see how it gets created, and the web uses 117,000 feet of tape that weighs in at 100 pounds.

World’s Largest Interactive 3-D Projection is world’s biggest claw game

by Mark R

GM has recently created an outrageous promotion for the Chevy Sonic at the famous Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. It involves the world’s biggest 3D projection and the world’s biggest claw game.

Yes, those claw games from the arcade has become bigger with bigger prizes. The ad agency Gooby Silverstein & Partners have created this fantastic 3D projection with an oversized gear shift as a joystick, with prizes of snowboards, electronics, and the 2012 Chevy Sonic.

There is a video of this after the jump if you want to see how it went. What really makes this cool is that the claw picks up a 3D version of the car for the lucky winner. Not only that, the 3D version of the car turns into a real version of the car after the projection has been “dropped”. You have to see it to believe it.

The Ice Hotels of Sweden and Romania

by Mark R

Since today is my 40th birthday, I have decided to celebrate by spending the night at a hotel. I can’t say that I would like to spend a night at this hotel, but it would make for an interesting story about the day I turned the big 4-0.

This ICEHOTEL is an annual project in the village of Jukkasjarvi. Every suite is specially made by artists who submit their ideas and have them selected by a jury. There are fifty artists in total that create the church, icebar, reception area, main hall and rooms. Of course, like all art, it is sadly temporary, and it melts every spring in the Torne River.

I thought that this ICEHOTEL looked familiar, and you might recognize a similar ice hotel in the James Bond movie Die Another Day. The movie was not filmed there, but it was the inspiration. After the jump, read more about another ice hotel in Romania.

Foldaway Walker’s Treadmill

by Edwin

Are you living in a cramped apartment that has very little space for anything else, especially when you want to make room for a new treadmill as you figured out it is time to start shedding those pounds? Well, assuming you have flat packed just about as many things as possible in your home, and have a minimalist decorative effect, and yet there is still not enough space, perhaps the $249.99 Foldaway Walker’s Treadmill might just come in to save the day.

This is the walker’s motorless treadmill which can fold to 14″ high, making it a snap to stash away or leave it upright against a wall once you are done with your daily exercise. There is nothing electric about this, so you can forget about the noisy whines that it makes. In fact, this manual model’s quiet, magnetic-resistance track and smooth dual weighted flywheels will allow you to maintain a workout routine regardless of where you are at home, without having to remain tethered to a power point, now how about that?

Microsoft is planning on leaving CES after 2012

by Mark R

I have been going to CES for several years, and Microsoft has always had significant presence there. They always have a huge booth that is located at the entrance of Central hall, and you literally can’t miss it. This is going to change.

This change will not occur at CES 2012, but at CES 2013. Microsoft has recently stated that “We won’t have a keynote or booth after this year because our product news milestones generally don’t align with the show’s January timing.”

Gigantic projected pinball machine for the Festival of Lights

by Mark R

There is nothing that I love more this time a year then giant, overly elaborate Christmas light displays. Someone at the Festival of Lights 2011 in Lyon has created a light display that can be used all years.

The reason why is because this display is a giant pinball machine, which will always be in season, even though the fad peaked at least thirty years ago.

There is a video after the jump if you want to see it in motion, but my source doesn’t tell me how it was all rigged up. The flippers look projected on there, and I would imagine that the rest of the lights were actually fixed up like neon.
