Deflexion silicone armor grows hard on impact

by Mark R

This next device is known as Deflexion, but it has nothing to do with a game played with lasers that we reported on a while back. No, Dow Corning created this Deflexion, which is a material made from silicon that has been polymerized into a flexible silicone sheets. The idea is to create some kind of armor that can shift around like clothing in a breathable fashion. However, if something …

This is the greatest robot costume, ever!

by Mark R

I realize that I am about a week late for any Halloween-related postings, but this robot costume should win any costume contest in any month. I don’t have the name of the man who made (and probably wore) this costume, but, according to my Source, it took 250 hours to build this costume. You can watch a video of it in motion after the jump. You will note that the …

Iran’s Bavar 2 flying machine-gun boats

by Mark R

I have heard a lot about how president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is very outspoken of the United States, the United Kingdom, not to mention Israel. Usually, when I see him on the news, it is in association with nuclear arms. This is apparently the Iranian weapon that we don’t hear about. I guess they would hardly be weapons of mass destruction, but the Bavar 2 fleet would scare me if I …

Raytheon Sarcos XOS 2 exoskeleton

by Mark R

I thought I would celebrate the release of Iron Man 2 on DVD and Blu-ray today by reporting on a real-life iron man exoskeleton. This is the XOS 2 from Raytheon Sarcos, and it is a lot more bulky than the armor from Mr. Tony Stark. It actually reminds me of the power loader suit that Ripley wore in Aliens. The suit is able to boost the user’s strength. You …

You Won’t See This Toy In Your Holiday Catalogs

by Ally

Don’t lie, you know you’d love to take the DTV Shredder for just a little spin.  I remember having a scooter that had a similar shape, but somehow this Shredder just completely obliterates any minor qualities mine may have featured.  I’m sure this has some very practical military uses, but I can’t say that any of the uses that are rolling through my brain would be considered practical.

Raytheon’s “pain gun” has gone to jail

by Mark R

I realize that this headline is a little misleading. You might remember the last time we covered the Raytheon pain gun being banned from Afghanistan. I am not implying that it has committed crimes and is being sent to jail. However, it is being used in a prison, specifically, the Pitchess Detention Center in Los Angeles. This non-lethal weapon is used to shoot a ray that is as thick as …

Tentacle Robot under development by the U.S. Army

by Mark R

Some of you might remember when we covered the Omnitread, an odd snake-like robot with the ability to crawl into small places. Apparently, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory is working on similar technology with a Robotic Tentacle Manipulator. As you can see, it has three snake robots on a circle base. These robot tentacle things sound like they will be programmed to detach from the base and then have the …

Giant Laser blasts 300mph aircraft

by Mark R

In case you thought that the pain gun was the only real-life science fiction weapon that Raytheon was up to, then you haven’t heard about this real-life laser. This Laser Close-In Weapon System was recently unveiled in an airshow in England, and it has recently made history as the first time a laser has shot down an aircraft in flight. This demonstration took place last May, and I don’t know …
