Raytheon pain gun gets set to Afghanistan, then sent back

by Mark R

It has been a while since we have reported on the Raytheon’s pain inducing gun. The military has been working on this device for years for “a more broad application for crowd control and interdiction which is known as the Active Denial System. Capable of inflicting limitless, unbearable pain, the ADS can unleash a wave of agony upon a force or crowd from a distance of over 250 meters.” This …

Smart Helmet detects how hard you have crashed

by Mark R

This Smart Helmet, developed by Northeastern University researchers, is designed for skiers, even though I never remember skiing with a helmet on. Of course, I never biked with a helmet on either, and I think that is a requirement now. I don’t know about wearing a helm on the slopes. The purpose of the smart helmet is to detect how much it has been impacted. Apparently, a lot of skiers …

Liquid armor hardens in contact with bullets

by Mark R

What you see there is a bullet-proof vest, and I’ve just learned that even the best ones cannot completely keep bullets out. However, this one model could change all of that. This model uses “custard-like goo” that somehow makes molecules lock together when it is hit. I’m going to assume that makes it really, really hard. Apparently, these “shear-thickening liquids” have been used by downhill skiers in order to prevent …

Vortex Cannon can bring down the house

by Mark R

I found this particular device reminded me of a handheld gun that I saw in Minority Report. In the film, Tom Cruise managed to spin this weapon, Wild West Style, and it created a blast of air that was more than enough to “blow the man down”. The Vortex Cannon is much heavier, but it is capable of shooting a ring-shaped cloud that is capable of traveling at 200 miles …

FPS games to teach medics

by Mark R

In case you are one of those people who think that First Person Shooter games are nothing but a vain activity, then you should know that they are sometimes used to train for combat. I’m sure that comes as no surprise, as what could be better for training a soldier to go into enemy territory than an FPS game. Believe it or not, these are also being used to train …

The Pincher is designed to take out explosives

by Mark R

I know what this looks like. You’re probably thinking that: “Oh no, it is a Star Wars/Terminator/Matrix/Battlestar Galactica/any other science fiction franchise robot that is designed to take out enemies. Are the humans its next target?” Actually, from what I have been reading from my sources, this robot, also known as “Pincher” is designed to disable Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from a long distance. It apparently uses rockets the size …

Automated Helicopter is one drug-buster

by Mark R

I heard that the U.S. military had those UAV Predator drones, but this is the first time that I have heard about them having robot helicopters. Apparently the U.S. Navy has one (at least), and it was on a trail run when “its home base warship detected a suspicious speedboat on radar.” Apparently, the robot helicopter, also known as “Fire Scout”, did a pursuit on this boat. What eventually happened …

Cloaks of Invisiblity are now a reality

by Mark R

Okay, before you get too excited about getting some magic invisibility cloak like Harry Potter, you should know that so far, this technology has only made one thing invisible: a bump on a gold bar. Yes, it is a bump that is only 0.00004 inches high and 0.0005 inch across, which you probably wouldn’t see in the first place, as it can only be seen with a magnifying glass. Still, …
