Philips SpeechMike loathes bacteria and other nasties

by Edwin

I still clearly remember Jack Nicholson’s character in the Oscar winning movie – “As Good As It Gets”, where he clearly suffered from an obsessive compulsive disorder, keeping his hands clean at possible at all times as though the whole world is perpetually unclean. Well, just in case you feel that you need to be far cleaner than the rest of the world, Philips has just the thing for you if you so happen to also record all your thoughts on a voice recorder. We are talking about the Philips SpeechMike which will in all probability have the healthcare industry as its primary target market.

Hospitals must be clean and sterile at all times since already sick people head there, and it makes sense to keep the place as clean as possible so that those poor folks don’t get any sicker. Well, some bacteria end up being more and more resistant against a bunch of antibiotics and disinfectants, so it always pays to nip the problem in the bud early on. The Philips SpeechMike would suit doctors with a fetish for cleanliness, as it sports a special antimicrobial surface – making it the only dictation microphone on the market to do so.

Cloth makes short work of bacteria

by Edwin

There are many ways to kill bacteria – those microscopic life forms that sometimes do bring harm to us in their very own special way, which explains why we have different kinds of defenses against these in the form of disinfectants, antibiotics and other kinds of chemical warfare. Well, here is a little something that might just aid us in our fight against these nigh invisible opponents – a new kind of cloth developed that is self-cleaning, where it kills bacteria in the process whenever it is exposed to sunlight.

Yes sir, you no longer need to worry too much about the kind of laundry powder to kill bacteria the next time you put your washing machine through another cycle as chemists at the University of California at Davis might have discovered a compound known as 2-AQC, where it will be incorporated into cotton fabrics. Whenever said infused fabrics are exposed to light, it ends up with a reaction, producing oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide that will make short work of bacteria while breaking down toxins.

No idea on what kinds of side effects this will have on humans in the long term, but immediate applications that can obviously make do with such an invention would be clothing for health care workers, farmers, and military personnel amongst others. All the more reason to get out into the sun now, eh?

Virtu-LIMB is the best robot hand I have seen

by Mark R

We have reported on prosthetic robot hands before, and I think we all know that this will be an obvious advancement in artificial limb technology.

The Virtu-limb from i-Limb Pulse made an appearance at the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association National Assembly in Las Vegas this week. This Virtu-limb is able to pick up electrical signals in arm muscles via electrodes.

This set-up is designed to transmit signals wirelessly to a prosthetic hand linked by Bluetooth to a PC. This hand on the dock is also known as a i-Limb Ultra. It can also do a PC simulation of an artificial hand in the digital space of a computer.

3D printer does artificial blood vessels

by Edwin

Hmmm, the world of printers might seem to be rather boring to some as improvements in this area are hardly worth reporting on – rarely making headlines, so to speak. Well, printing has taken on a new dimension with the introduction of 3D printers, as you get to deliver what your mind has conceived in an actual, 3D object – which previously you had to spend far more money elsewhere to get that done.

Guess where is another use of 3D printer applicable in our everyday lives? We’re talking about using a 3D printer to roll out artificial blood vessels, and these blood vessels might soon see action during transplants of lab-created organs.

Baby Plus Prenatal-Education System

by Edwin

Talk about competitive! If you think that the modern world has somehow forgot to stop and smell the roses, then you are probably correct. After all, why bother cramming more knowledge down the brains of our poor children when they are meant to explore the world in a sense of wonder? Now with devices like this £99.99 Baby Plus Prenatal-Education System, it seems that the game of one up-manship is set to continue – where learning takes place in the womb before baby draws his/her first breath of oxygen.

This particular device is said to have the necessary scientific backing to prove its effectiveness, claiming that babies are most receptive when they’re still in the womb. So all mums-to-be need to do is sit down, relax with a cup of tea, and place this prenatal teaching tool to their baby bump. It will emit the familiar and comforting sounds of mum’s heartbeat, changing the rhythm gradually over time to become more complex.

Foetal Heart Detector

by Edwin

There is nothing quite like the feeling of being a new parent, but the nine month journey can be a rather arduous one, especially when complications arise. Many people have sworn that your baby, while still in the womb, is capable of recognizing familiar sounds and voices, but all of that seems to be one way traffic. Parents who want to connect on an even deeper level might want to give the £39.99 Foetal Heart Detector a go – after all, listening to someone’s heartbeat is always soothing, don’t you think so?

I’m quite sure the heartbeat is not all you will listen to – perhaps a hiccup or two might be in order? This seems to be the perfect way of embracing what life inside the womb is like from one’s ears, and all output can even be recorded onto a computer for posterity’s sake. Seems to be an early start in bonding with baby, but you won’t regret every moment since they tend to grow up way too fast.

NewYu Connected Monitor offers options in fitness regime

by Edwin

The NewYu Connected Fitness Monitor and Service was recently paraded at the IDEA Show in Los Angeles, California, where it intends to make its mark as a new, comprehensive system for monitoring and managing wellness goals throughout the entire day. After all, it can be quite a chore trying to maintain your fitness goals with the everyday pressures of life building all up around you.

The NewYu Connected Monitor will rely on an industry first – we’re talking about motion detection and advanced pattern recognition technology which is capable of detecting and identifying specific body movements, and since it is extremely tiny, you will be able to clip it just about anywhere on your torso or to a particular pocket.

Date-rape detection device can save you from a regrettable evening

by Mark R

I’m not the kind that is a part of the nightlife, so to speak, but I am aware of date-rape drugs like Rohypnol or “roofies”.

I would hate to be one to wake up from my bed with no memory of what I had done the following night, but know that I was violated. If something could prevent that, it is worth having around. Two scientists at Tel Aviv University school of chemistry claim that they have a sensor that can detect the most common date-rape drugs even though they are colorless, odorless, and tasteless.

This sensor looks like a straw or swizzle stick, and it sucks up a small sample of the drink in order to mix it with a testing solution. Like litmus paper, this detector changes color in the presence of GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid), ketamine, at a success rate of 100 percent.
