When you want to turn your home into a smart home, you know it’s not something that you can buy, open a box, and immediately have. You have to purchase separate elements of a smart home, and configure them to all work together. Only after you have all the parts, pieces, and bugs worked out does it start to feel like a futuristic home that you barely have to move a finger to control.

Of course, we’re not quite to the point where your gestures will turn off the lights or adjust the heat, so we need a device that will control our surroundings. This Aerb Wireless Keyboard Mouse Remote will take a little work to use across all your gizmos and gadgets, but once you’re done it will be the one pulling all the strings, and can fit in your hand. This multi-axes pointing device works for all sorts of gadgets and computers simultaneously as a mouse, keyboard, and remote.

You would start with the wireless receiver and remote, though you’ll need to get hold of some AAA batteries to make it do anything. This only costs $14.99, which makes you question how well it plays with other devices. If your aim is to try to cheap out and you don’t mind working through a few buggy aspects, it would likely end up being a reasonable purchase for the cost-conscious consumer.

The PancakeBot prints perfectly precise pancakes Thu, 06 Oct 2016 18:30:19 +0000 pancake-bot

Not everyone has the fortitude to wake up each morning and make an actual breakfast for themselves. The only people who absolutely must on a daily basis are parents, as you can’t really send a little kid to school without giving them some form of nutrition before they spend hours learning. If you actually enjoy breakfast and want to make it a bit more interesting, then why not add a little flair to the morning routine?

While it would take a bit of planning, this PancakeBot is sure to help your kids care about eating, and will make morning prep more interesting for you. This is a batter dispensing system that will print and cook pancakes for your household. It comes with software that will let you or your little ones draw your own masterpieces to be printed and eaten as well. Of course, if no one is fond of drawing, then you could certainly use the pre-made options, or just look up art online.

This consists of the BPA-free plastic bottle that will hold your batter, a non-stick griddle, and the system that makes it all possible. Almost all parts of this are removable for easy cleanup, and the only thing you’ll need to worry about is playing with the thickness of your batter. Keep in mind that you will need to have an SD card and a card reader on your computer to be able to access any art though. This is a purchase that will cost around $300, but will definitely make breakfast more entertaining.

The Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Generator will help you to keep your bathroom smelling fresh Thu, 01 Sep 2016 19:30:03 +0000 Sharp Ion Generator

Your bathroom is not exactly a clean place. We don’t go in there with the intent of coming out smelling of roses, but we also don’t want any aromas that are born in that room to waft into other parts of the house. While scented sprays and regular cleaning can do a great deal to improve the situation, they won’t immediately tackle anything…fresh.

Rather than trying to cover up a smell, why not kill it at the source? We’ve seen a fair few ionizer gadgets that will sterilize the air, but this Sharp Plasmacluster Ceiling Mounted Ion Generator will help you with more than one task as it is also your light bulb! This LED light screws into E26, 34mm light bulb sockets and will use the electricity from the socket to power the ion generator. It’s tackling two birds with one stone, and you get to have a fresher smelling home because of it!

This is motion activated, so any time there’s movement in its general vicinity it will start going to town on the air. While it would be useful to have these in other rooms of the house, there’s a decent chance that not many people are going to be able to shell out for more than the initial one at $479. It’s a steep price to pay, but will certainly make breathing after a particularly tough bathroom visit a tad easier.

The Gaze Standing Desk helps improve your posture Mon, 15 Aug 2016 19:30:37 +0000 Gaze Desk

We’re starting to understand how working with computers can affect our bodies more and more. It’s pretty common knowledge that you should be giving your eyes a break, getting up to stretch, and sitting properly to avoid any muscle or tendon strain. Regardless, we still maintain some pretty bad habits, and it’s hard to break them if we don’t force ourselves to.

While a standing desk is great, you don’t want to be stuck only standing, and if it’s one you adjust, then you might spend more time sitting than you should. The Gaze Desk is hoping to change that as it is both ergonomic and smart, meaning it will connect to your smartphone to persuade you to start keeping better habits when working. Not only will you be standing more often, but the phone app will remind you when you need to change things up. You can adjust settings on your phone or through the control panel under the desk.

This consists of two tiers, the main desk and a monitor stand so you’re not craning your neck. The phone will nudge you every two hours to get up, and there’s even calorie tracking as standing will having you burning more than sitting. The app also has achievement badges and ranking between you and any friends you have that also happen to have this desk. That would be a bit surprising though as this will cost you $1099 or much more depending on what you want. This is of course dependent on whether or not you want to toss your change into a crowdfunding campaign.

Toasteroid – get creative with breakfast Fri, 12 Aug 2016 19:30:42 +0000 Toasteroid

While commercials about mornings show us beautiful people drinking a smoothie made of fresh, organic produce, we know that breakfast is hardly so glamorous. We’re lucky to cook an egg to go with our toast that is oftentimes eaten in the car on the way to work. If we’re going to be stuck with a bland breakfast, it doesn’t mean we can’t find ways to spruce up the morning.

While having a whole meal for breakfast will always be preferable, at least you have the option to jazz up your bread with the Toasteroid. This is a completely frivolous product that is aimed at families with restless children that need more things to do to allow their parents more prep time in the morning. It’s somewhat like the Selfie Toaster we’ve seen in the past, but this version is far more customizable.

The Toasteroid works with an app where you will get to choose what gets burned into your breakfast. To keep kids occupied or add some artistic flair to your morning meal, you can doodle on the app and have it put on your toast, have the forecast burned into the bread, or send a message to your loved ones who also happen to have this device. You can choose the time and coloration of the bread within the app, so there aren’t any buttons to worry about. This is an $85 gizmo that is completely a “why not” purchase that will, if nothing else, make your mornings more interesting.

This Dawn to Dusk Nightlight helps parents make those deadly nighttime bathroom trips Wed, 10 Aug 2016 18:30:26 +0000 Nightlight

Being a parent is a combination of keeping a child and yourself alive while pretending you don’t need much sleep. That being said, if you are lucky enough to get your child to sleep through the night, you have to be quiet as a mouse to keep them that way. Of course, stepping on a LEGO while trying to get to the bathroom at 2am will need to either be prevented entirely or emit a non-existent sound from you to keep said angel babies asleep.

If you’d rather not rely on your memory that is likely frazzled beyond recognition, perhaps it’s best to keep some nightlights up. Of course, having parent-brain means you’ll need it to be something that functions autonomously, like the WOANI Dusk to Dawn Night Lights. These are wall-plug night lights that will turn on only when it’s dark out and shut off when the sun comes up. It uses 4 soft, bright, white LEDs that shouldn’t blind you after having just woken up from what was hopefully intended sleep.

This comes in a set of 6, are 110-220volts, and should last until your little one is close to college-age. They are a bit big measuring 2.5” on any given side, so you have to be prepared to only use one plug on an outlet and not be able to access the other. It’ll cost you around $13 to get this set, and will likely come in handy for sneaking ice cream in the kitchen during the wee hours without tripping over toys or laundry on the way.

Tapia – the AI Robot who makes you feel feelings Mon, 01 Aug 2016 19:30:33 +0000 Tapia AI

We live in a day and age where work is becoming more and more important, and our social lives are starting to suffer. It’s not that we don’t want to go out with friends, but if we want to keep our heads above water and move on to a job we don’t hate, we have to work harder than ever. That being said, it can get pretty lonely when you’re working, keeping up with a home, and trying to make sure your body isn’t falling apart.

While we can’t hire a personal assistant, you can buy Tapia, the AI Robot Companion. This looks like a little white egg with eyes, but it can do far more than add a little protein to your day. It can remember names, birthdays, recognize voices, actions, and pick up on things like your tone and inflection to know whether you’ve had a bad day. Imagine coming home from a terrible day and having Tapia turn on your favorite tunes while making you a coffee.

This little robot is also capable of making phone calls, telling you the weather, ordering things online for you, notifying family if you’re absent for a certain period of time, manage your schedule, read stories, and more. By itself, the battery will last for about 8 hours and will need 6 hours on the charging base. It can speak English, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese, but be careful, because you’ll only get to pick once in the setup. This robot will cost you $1,580, but seeing that it can be just as good as Amazon Echo and also remind you of more personal things like calling your mom, it might be the better option overall, just not for your wallet.

The Bio Bidet Ultimate BB-600 will change your bathroom experience forever Thu, 07 Jul 2016 18:30:23 +0000 Bidet Toilet Seat

Once you’ve been on a fancy high-tech toilet, nothing in your life ever feels the same again. If you spend three nights in a hotel room with a toilet that has heated seats, bidet, and butt dryer, you will notice how unexciting a toilet-related experience is anywhere else. It also helps you to feel cleaner after a rousing round of checking social media long after the last drop.

While getting a fully automated toilet from Japan would be a costly endeavor, you can at least get a toilet seat that will give you some of the same comforts. The BioBidet Ultimate BB-600 is an elongated or round toilet seat that has a side panel that will let you control all sorts of wonderful new experiences for your derriere. It is said to be easy to install on your own, and comes with a power saving mode so your electricity bill won’t be sky high.

The perks of this particular model, as there are definitely others out there, is that it has dual nozzles for bum and lady-bits washing, adjustable heat, a slow-closing lid, and there are different types of cleansing it can do for you as well. This is no small purchase at around $399, and you will have to put in some work to get this to start making bathroom trips more pleasant. Normally we would be a bit grossed out if a toilet seat is warm as it’s normally a sign of prior struggle, but in this case it’s a pretty great experience.

FoldiMate makes being lazy easier than ever Tue, 21 Jun 2016 19:30:27 +0000 Foldimate

There are some products I come across which make me question where humanity is headed. We already have convenience at our fingertips, and the sky is the limit with what we can do. Of course, making so many things easy to use and access breeds a special type of laziness. It’s not that we mean to, but it’s so simple to start taking the conveniences of every day life for granted.

If you want to worsen this dependency on things being done for you at the literal press of a button, then FoldiMate is going to be your favorite new addition to your household. You clip your clothes onto the machine, press a button, and your clothes come out freshly folded. Of course, you’re not going to pay out $700-850 for a laundry folding machine alone. That would be silly.

In addition to folding your shirts with unnecessary precision, this will also remove wrinkles, perfume, soften, and treat your clothes as they come through (only pants, shirts, and towels though). There’s no washing or drying of clothing though, so you’ll still need to use the two other machines on top of this. You will definitely finish your laundry two times faster, but your electricity, getting replacement softener and scent capsules, and the cost of machine maintenance will add a hefty sum to your monthly bills. The plus side is that it’s so easy to use that even your kids won’t be able to mess it up. The downside is that they won’t know how to fold laundry.

Noria – who knew a window box could keep you cool? Wed, 01 Jun 2016 18:30:30 +0000 noria

When you’re looking at apartments, you want to make sure you get a place that has air conditioning. You think you can handle it with fans and wearing shorts, but there will come a breaking point, and it will be sweaty and disgusting. Window air conditioners are an option, but they’re not fun to install, decimate your ability to see out the window, and are louder than that uncle that always gets smashed at Christmas.

If you want a smaller and more tolerable method of staying cool, Noria might be something you’ll want to look into. This is a super small, supposedly super-effective window box that not only restores most of your view, but makes using it easy as turning a knob, and can connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth for further control. You can schedule it to run on a timer, or put it on fresh air mode to pull outside air in when the weather is a bit cooler. It’s about as loud as light rainfall, and shoots the air at the ceiling for better circulation to prevent warm air pockets. Regular usage during the summer months will cost you around $50 in utilities.

This can handle rooms up to 160 square feet, so you’d definitely need more than one if you’re not living in a micro apartment. This measures 5.8 x 18.25 x 15”, and the window opening size is 21-36” wide. You’ll be able to squeeze this onto a single or double-hung window frame, and thankfully you don’t have to be built of muscle to install this as it only weighs 30 pounds. You’ll be looking at paying out around $299 for this unit, and can expect it sometime in March of next year.

Available for crowdfunding on Kickstarter
