DIY Ice Swan Sculpture

September 13th, 2006 by Al in Garden Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets

Ics SwanYou sometimes see ice sculptures at posh parties or weddings. Most people do not have a) the skill or b) the surplus money to have an ice sculpture at their weekend barbecue (the ones I get invited to are generally bring your own food and beer (you know who you are)). Well now you can impress all your mates by making your own Ice Swan Sculpture.

To make your own ice swan you don’t need special chisels and years of practice (you don’t even need a block of ice). Simply pour cold water into the supplied mould, stick it in the freezer over night and hey presto you have your very own swan made from ice. The frozen swan measures 29 x 23 x 8 cm which may not be as impressive as the ones at celebrity parties but it will take the attention away from your burnt burgers :).

The DIY Ice Swan kit is available from Latest Buy for just over £20 (~$38).

Self-winding Garden Hose

August 22nd, 2006 by Mike in Garden Gadgets

Hydro Industires' ReelSmartWatering your plants during the summer is pretty much required, unless you want them to die. This isn’t such a bad thing, it gets you outside for one, but then there’s that pesky garden hose. Unwinding it is no problem at all, just keep pulling until it’s out. The problem is winding it back up again, it takes practice to be able to do it without getting it all knotted and making it torture to get out the next time you use it.

You really need the ReelSmart from Hydro-Industries, it’s a self-winding hose. The hose is housed in a plastic, yet sturdy, box-like container. Setup is simple, just install the included parts and you’re done. No, it doesn’t involve many tools, you’ll use a screwdriver once and that’s it!

Outdoor Misting System

August 3rd, 2006 by Liam in Garden Gadgets, Home Gadgets

Outdoor Misting System
I don’t know about other places, but it has been very hot where I live lately. If you want a great way to beat the heat but still stay outside and enjoy your yard, an Outdoor Misting System could be just what you need.

This system cools the air around any outdoor area by shooting up a fine mist. This can cool your summer space by up to 20 degrees fahrenheit so you can comfortably enjoy a deck, patio or whatever you want.

Included in one kit is 10 feet of mist line as well as 15 feet of supply line so you don’t need to have your mist area right next to your house. If 10 feet of mist isn’t enough to cool your area down, you can buy additional kits and attach them together to create up to 100 feet of mist!

ScareCrow Sprinkler

August 2nd, 2006 by Liam in Garden Gadgets, Home Automation

ScareCrow Sprinkler
If you want a humane, effective, and funny way to get rid of crows or other pesky animals that come onto your property so you can save your garden from being eaten or keep animals out of your garbage you may want to consider the ScareCrow Sprinkler. This automatic motion-detecting sprinkler will help you keep pests off of your lawn, and I think the reaction that you would get from animals when a jet of water suddenly shot out at them would be priceless, not to mention keep them away from your lawn for a long time.

You just have to set it up anywhere in your yard and attach it to your home’s water supply. It requires no external power as it can last for 6 months on a single 9 volt battery! It’s also very water-conserving as one detection only uses 2-3 cups of water.

Camping poleI love having barbeques its so much fun . Get all your mates together, sit in the garden under the sun, have a few beers, cook some sausages and miniature corn on the cobs. But there is a lot to prepare before hand. You need all the food items, drinks, utensils, rubbish bags etc. With everything needed for a barbeque you could easily be put off having one. Solar-Powered Bird Bath

July 27th, 2006 by Liam in Garden Gadgets, Home Gadgets

Solar-Powered Bird Bath
This gadget would give a neat look to your yard, and would probably attract a lot of birds. The Solar-Powered Bird Bath is an elegant looking bird bath with a built in pump which is completely solar-powered!

You can do away with having dirty, neglected bird baths which attract nothing but insects. Since this bird bath has a built in pump, the water is constantly recirculating so it won’t lay stagnant for months on end and collect dirt.

The Tomato Maker
If you like growing your own, fresh tomatoes, but are too lazy to care for them or you just can’t grow them outside, you’d probably love a Tomato Maker kit. The Tomato-Maker™ allows you to grow tomatoes anywhere and is grown in a convenient bag. It also requires no dirt!

The seeds grow in Magic Millennium Soil, a safe soil substitute that allows your tomato plants to get all the nutrients they need. They also grow faster than regular tomatoes growing outdoors. It’s also very easy to maintain, requiring that you only water it once until it blooms.

Motion-sensing Glow Stone

July 15th, 2006 by Liam in Garden Gadgets, Home Gadgets

Motion-sensing Glow Stone
I think this gadget would be really neat for outdoor gettogethers or providing unoffensive light where you need it. The Glow Stone by day looks like a normal stone lying in your yard, however by night it becomes a motion-sensing, glowing stone.

The Glow Stone is equipped with a motion sensor on one side of it which can detect motion within 12 feet so you have to make sure you have it pointing towards the most active area. It only will attempt to turn on when it is dark out, and only is activated for 15-30 seconds when it detects movement (unless of course there’s constant movement) so it is very energy efficient.
