C3 Technologies creates photo-realistic 3D city visualizations

by Mark R

If you ever go to CES, make certain to get an invitation to the Lunch at Piero’s on the first and second day of the convention. I swear, I find the coolest of the coolest gadgets there.

Two years ago, I encountered augmented reality for the first time. Now it is everywhere. This year, C3 Technologies showed me what’s what with their flagship product Realistic 3D City Models.

Realistic 3D City Models is exactly what it sounds like, a way of recreating overhead maps of cities on a 2D screen with 3D technology. At the aforementioned CES demonstration, C3 had a very big screen that it used for this, and I was able to see a photo-realistic San Francisco from overhead.

The new Nike + SportWatch GPS at CES 2011

by Mark R

I saw this watch from shoe giant Nike last night at the CES 2011 event Pepcom. The Nike+SportsWatch GPS uses the Nike+ sensor based in the shoe for tracking time, pace, distance, calories burned as well as heart rate.

It also has something else: a GPS powered by TomTom. This allows the watch to track “what a user does, how they do it, and then motivates the user to improve on previous performances over the each route”. After the user is completed with their run or other exercises, they can take off their watch and connect it to a PC with the built-in USB dongle. From there, data is uploaded to the NikePlus.com site for viewing of completed runs, setting new goals, as well as interacting with other runners.

Charles the GPS robot can read a driver’s expressions

by Mark R

This week, we are going to be at CES 2011 in Vegas, and we will be covering a lot of brand spanking new technology from a lot of real companies. I thought that I would get this conceptual product out of the way before I head down to Vegas tomorrow.

This is Charles, a GPS unit that is not a small box that suction cups to your dashboard. As you can see from the picture, Charles has a head along with shoulders. (He is the one on the right, by the way.)

Charles is designed from scientists at Cambridge, and it can read the user’s facial expression, voice tone, as other behavioral hints so it is “more sympathetic to your mood”.

New Spark Nano Helps You Find Jesus this Holiday Season

by Julie

I love this time of year, I love the decorations, the lights, the  hustle and bustle of the city. But I also know that even during this most wonderful time, there are Scrooges everywhere, just looking for an opportunity to steal my stuff.

Humbug!

The Grinch should think twice this year before trying to steal Christmas, thanks to high-tech, folks can protect their holiday paraphernalia from would be crooks using The Spark Nano, the worlds smallest GPS tracker. Churches and small businesses in my area are currently using these devices installed in their Nativity scenes to protect Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the 3 wise men, from wise guys, who think stealing characters from a nativity scene is a good time. SkyKap – It’s like a caddie in your hat

by Julie

Let’s face it, to some of us golf is more than just a game. Okay, to some of us, it’s a lot more. Some of us are completely addicted to it. In fact, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat around on a Sunday and wondered just how long it was going to take that golf loving husband of mine to come home. Geez.

Maybe the SkyKap Advisor, is just the thing to get him home faster. A hands free, voice activated microcomputer GPS system contained in the brim of a regular golf hat. With some pretty amazing technology, The Advisor provides personal audio responses activated by the golfer’s commands. The Advisor gives the distance to greens, bunkers, water, boundaries and a whole lot more. Continue reading » SkyKap – It’s like a caddie in your hat

Garmin introduces Approach S1 GPS wristwatch

by Edwin

Most folks who play golf are pretty well off, or at least middle class at worst. Well, this means they have a pretty secure and cushy job, coupled with timeshare vacations elsewhere, own a couple of properties with the mortgage fully paid off perhaps, and drive a convertible sports car with an upmarket saloon for more ordinary errands.

This would also mean their choice of attire will be branded for most, not to mention having a pretty nice wristwatch with metal straps. Who would have thought that one would wear a GPS wristwatch instead? Garmin’s Approach S1 GPS wristwatch is meant for those who love spending time on the greens, as it is capable of displaying precise yardages to the front, back and middle of greens while boasting more than 14,000-plus courses pre-loaded.

Driverless vehicles finish their journey from Italy to Shanghai

by Mark R

Some of you might remember when we reported on the driverless vehicles who wanted to take a road trip from Parma, Italy to Shanghai, China. We are pleased to present a follow-up report on their success.

For those that don’t remember, these vehicles were not truly driverless, as they had people in them that could take over the vehicles at the push of a button. Although I haven’t read the official report yet, my Source says that the 8,078 mile (13,000 kilometer) trip was done “with minimal intervention”.
