The NCC has already started working on a Goodyear-branded commercial vehicle GPS known as the GY500X. This unit was specifically designed for the trucking industry and drivers of various commercial vehicles including vans, railers, Recreational Vehicles and motor homes. This is more than a GPS built with commercial needs in mind, it was specially designed from the ground up to appeal to a trucker’s needs. Some of the key features found on the GY500X include :-

  • Up-to-date Commercial Routes
  • Height Restrictions
  • Vehicle Weight Restrictions and Weight per Axle Restrictions
  • Hazardous Materials restrictions
  • 4.3″ widescreen touch display
  • Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free conversation
  • FM Transmitter for car stereo integration
  • Points of Interest specific for Commercial Vehicle Drivers

In addition, the unit comes with commercial trucking-specific routes based on factors the driver can input such as vehicle height, vehicle weight, and freight contents. Talk about getting the best route calculated for you before even stepping out of the door! These units will be out sometime in the first quarter of next year.

Intelligent Digital Compass for nostalgic folks

by Edwin

I’m not too sure why you would want to settle for a device like the Intelligent Digital Compass with the myriad of GPS devices around, but perhaps there is a novelty of marking up to three different spots in its memory so that you can return to them at a later time. Hopefully the Intelligent Digital Compass is robust enough to last for many years, since it will be interesting to bury a time capsule and check out its location a few decades down the road. Expected to hit the market sometime in January next year, it features an LCD display that shows you the direction you need to head to as well as the remaining distance, battery life and GPS signal status. With it being backlit, you won’t have any problem using this in the dark. Perfect for those who want to venture away from camp in a forest at night.

Sanyo Easy Street NVM-4370 GPS system

by Edwin

It is interesting to note that Sanyo is the best-selling brand of portable navigation systems in Japan, as we rarely see that brand make its GPS navigation systems available across the Pacific. This time round things are slightly different, as the folks at Sanyo feel generous enough to release the Easy Street NVM-4370 in the US. At first glance, you will be greatly surprised at the slimness of the device – it is one of the thinnest GPS navigation systems in the market, measuring less than 0.72″. Robotic Spyplanes have Medical uses too

by Mark R

This isn’t the first time that we have reported on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and most of the time, these are used for spying in enemy territory. It appears that UAVs have medicinal uses as electronic flying couriers.

Think of them as that big G button on Speed Racer’s Mach 5 that fires an electronic homing pigeon. It was used on the cartoon all the time, but only mentioned in the movie. (By the way, the Speed Racer movie is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, and you should invest your money in a film that was incredibly awesome and yet was somehow a box-office flop.)

Sorry for digression, but I thought the Speed Racer reference would give you a good idea what these electronic courier pigeons do. These things can be programmed to carry medical supplies to and fro to places that don’t have advanced hospitals, such as Third World countries.
