Ranger GPS for the Nintendo DS

by Mark R

rangerNintendo DS has been making the news with the DSi, and we’ve reported on a number of new applications for this portable gaming system in the past few years.

I’m not certain if this is the first time we reported on a GPS unit for the DS, but this one from Ranger China is the first that I have ever seen. It looks like all you have to do is plug it in to the GBA cartridge slot, and you got yourself a grand Garmin look-alike!

The Ranger has the latest GPS chipset, and uses Google Maps software. I believe that the plan is to have it work with other devices besides the DS, like a laptop, PDA, or any other Windows CE or Linux devices.

Sat Nav Shoes look set to rock

by Edwin

Trust us on this – a shoe is not just an ordinary piece of walking equipment that you wear so that you won’t end up with blisters at the end of the day after following your other half through endless miles of shopping malls. Not when your feet are treated to the wonders of the Sat Nav Shoes. Not only does each pair help you walk around comfortably without causing potential health problems, they also feature GPS technology that help guide you from postcode to postcode, making us wonder whether postmen who walk through rural areas will find this to be much more useful compared to a conventional map. How in tarnation does a pair of Sat Nav Shoes work, anyways? We were stumped initially, but thank the heavens for a pretty comprehensive product description.

Garmin nüvi 465T targets truckers

by Edwin

Garmin International Inc. is a common name when it comes to satellite navigation, and this time round they show that they do not only care about ordinary drivers like you and I, but they also have the interests of over-the-road, long-haul navigation and delivery trucks in their hearts by announcing the new nüvi 465T. Unveiled at the Mid America Truck Show that is currently going on till the 21st, the Garmin nüvi 465T is able to support multiple truck profiles and features advanced routing and guidance to support truck-related road restrictions including height, width, length, weight and hazardous materials. All you need to do is clue in the device by entering the truck’s dimensions and load restrictions, and the nüvi 465T will get to work straight away by adjusting the many routes ahead based on your truck’s profile. Pretty neat – hopefully the map data is updated though as you wouldn’t want to drive into a tunnel or under a bridge that is too low for your rig just because Garmin says so.

Snooper helps find your lost dog

by James

On Christmas Day, I had a dog disappear on us, prompting me to spend most of my holiday putting up “have you seen this dog?” notices all over the neighborhood. Notices which did absolutely no good whatsoever (the woman who found him called the number on his tag two days later). After he left us to go to that great puppy farm in the sky, we got another dog who proved to be every bit the escape artist as his predecessor. So, believe me when I tell you that a small GPS tag like the SNOOPER PET TRACKER GPSS is of great interest to me and every other dog owner who’s spent many a late night driving around neighborhoods whistling like a crazy person.

i-gotU Babe with the GT-120 Geotagger

by Mark R

The latest fad for taking pictures on vacation, especially a hike, is geotagging, a way of cataloguing your pictures with GPS coordinates in case you want to find the place where you visited again.

Unfortunately, some people don’t have a geotagging feature on their present model of digital camera, but you can compensate for it with the i-gotU GT-120.

The i-gotU is a GPS tagger that the user puts on his or her person somewhere. Once it is switched on, it will record not only where you were, but when. If the clock on your camera is synced with the clock on the i-gotU, then you will have an accurate record of where you have been.

Of course, you will have to match the time of the picture with the time on the i-gotU later, but you basically have a poor-man’s (or woman’s) geotagging system. All you need to do is plug in the i-gotU into your USB slot on your PC (i-gotU is not Mac compatible), and you can upload the coordinates of your trip into Google Maps/Earth, Flickr, or any other social networking site.
