Trimersion wireless VR gaming headset

January 9th, 2007 by Marc in CES 2007, Gaming Gadgets

Trimersion
Virtual Reality has had a chequred history over the years. It’s a technology that has always amazed anybody who’s tried it but the component cost has always kept it out of the hands of most people.

Trimersion are trying to change that with the release of their wireless VR headet. Yes, I did say wireless! The problem with using a headset for first person shooters is that when you’re standing up, blowing away aliens on a virtual spaceship, you can get very disoriented and end up tripping over the cable. Plus the weight of it tugging on you is a constant reminder that you’re still in the real world.

Trimersion have solved this problem by sending the video to the headet via a wireless transmitter. And because we all like to shoot things every once in a while they made a controller shaped like a gun and attached it to the headset. End result? In theory, a scarily effective sense of immersion.

I say in theory because the CES show gremlins are out in force so although I can see the accuracy of the head tracker (by watching it manipulate the game on the TV) and try the headset on for ergonomics, I can’t actually see a picture inside it :-(

Trimersion assure me that this is a show related problem and that they’ve never had any issues running inside people’s houses – time will tell whether that’s going to be a problem or not as the wireless spectrum gets increasingly crowded.

Ergonomically the headset is a good fit even with my glasses on – close fitting but comfortable – and the stereo headphones do a good job of isolating you from reality. The controller is styled like a sawn off shotgun so you can imagine how well it works (or would work if I could try it) on first person shooters. The controller has various buttons and d-pads to replicate the standard controls of your average console controller so plug the unit in and you’re good to go.

The Trimersion comes with connecting cables to plug into Xbox, PS2 and USB for the PC and it’ll be available in it’s wireless form later this year for $395.

December 22nd, 2006 by Edwin in Gaming Gadgets, PC Gadgets

shuttle-sdxi.jpgSo your neighbor thinks he’s cool and all after snagging a spanking new 60GB PlayStation 3, but hardcore gamers know that when it comes to a full-fledged gaming system, nothing comes quite close to the PC, not even Gears of War on the Xbox 360. With that in mind, why not spite the Joneses by picking up the SDXi gaming rig from Shuttle’s XPC 1337 range? You can be sure that you will have the fastest machine around the neighborhood, giving you an edge over your opponents who constantly roam the virtual worlds of World of Warcraft, Counter Strike, Battlefield, and countless others.

Frag Pedal gives you an edge

December 18th, 2006 by Edwin in Gaming Gadgets, USB Gadgets

frag-pedal.jpgMost gamers take some time when perusing a certain type of genre before they can come up with a control scheme that they are most comfortable with, and this scenario more often than not occurs within the realm of PC gaming as compared with console games that have a limited amount of buttons and joysticks. A different placement of keys or a slight shift from the familiarity of your button configuration could mean an end game result that favors your opponent. Thankfully, we have ThinkGeek who delivers the Frag Pedal for PC gamers, offering the use of our legs to free up at least a key or two on the keyboard while fragging away.

Java Space Invaders

December 13th, 2006 by Al in Gaming Gadgets

I generally enjoy coding games more than I do playing them (then again when I get my Wii that might change). I started our sister site Game Addicts with my friend Sean who is a professional games programmer, there’s been a lack of posts there recently (changing now thanks Edwin) due to a series of mini games that we’ve been working on (when I say we I actually mean Sean).

The first of which is the very cool retro game Space Invaders:

This took Sean about 2 lunch hour man days to write which I reckon is pretty damn cool. So please check it out and gives us some feedback (I coded the high score system so please don’t break it).

If you’d like to feature the game on your own site or blog get in touch and I’ll send you instructions and add a link to your site to the high score table (this is still pretty much in beta so a few testers would be great).

Wii sensor goes wireless

December 13th, 2006 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

wireless-wii-sensor.jpg

So you’ve bought a spanking new Nintendo Wii as part of your get fit regiment in view of the upcoming holiday season where you will indulge in plenty of eating, drinking, and video gaming. Unfortunately, as with everything in this world, there is nothing perfect, and the very same thing applies to the Wii sensor that falters under extra bright conditions. The Wireless Wii Sensor does not provide a foolproof method against dropped or wayward connections with your Wiimote in the presence of bright light, but it does do away with the pesky cable that definitely turns down the Wii’s sex appeal by a notch.

Sink that Star Destroyer!

December 10th, 2006 by Edwin in Childrens Gadgets, Gadget Gift Ideas, Gaming Gadgets, Toys

star-wars-battleship.jpgThe world is divided into two types of people – those who absolutely love Star Wars and all of its nuances and those who loathe this piece of fantasy science fiction with a touch of mythology and hokey religion. Thankfully, there are way more of the latter that keeps the Star Wars merchandise machine going for decades ever since Luke Skywalker graced the silver screen almost 30 years ago. Hammacher is currently carrying the Star Wars version of the classic board game Battleship for a $59.95 price tag. Unfortunately, those who are living out of the Continental U.S. and Canada won’t have any luck bagging one as Hammacher will not ship it anywhere else.

December 10th, 2006 by Edwin in Gaming Gadgets

ds-motion-card.jpgSo everybody and his dog has already had a go at the motion sensitive Nintendo Wii but you, and you are desperate to jump on the bandwagon without any success as new arrivals of Wii consoles get snapped up as soon as they make their way into gaming stores and electronic boutiques everywhere. Fret not, as there is still some hope in the form of the upcoming DS Motion Card. This unique plug-in is a revolutionary motion sensor which is compatible with both Nintendo DS and DS Lite handheld consoles. It comes with a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope combination that aims to bring handheld gaming to the next level (as if the touchscreen experience is not enough to differentiate it from other gaming systems).
