Archos Gmini 402cc Review

November 10th, 2005 by Al in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

Archos Gmini 402cc
A mate of mine has had an assortment of problems with his iPod Nano, so he’s opted to flog it on eBay and buy himself an Archos Gmini 402cc and he was kind enough to write us a review. Over to you Alex.

I’ve had a disappointing experience with Apple and their iPod nanos plus their cheesy tech support. Long story short, Apple is very disappointing and so is their product line. So, I’ve decided to upgrade to something a lot better. One of my good friends Jon has a nifty piece of tech called the Gmini 402. So, I did some searching, and discovered that Archos just released their new Gmini 402 CC. Now, Jon’s Gmini is simply amazing. It plays video, music, games, and records sound, plus a lot more. But the Gmini 402cc has so much more to offer.

Watch Live TV on your PSP

November 2nd, 2005 by Al in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets

Locationfree

I wanted a PSP (PlayStation Portable) before and after reading a press release from Sony I now want one even more (shame I’m a bit skint). Sony announced today that the PSP firmware version 2.5 includes Locationfree application support .

Locationfree has been around for a while now (though hasn’t really taken off that much in the UK yet) and allows you to control, listen to and watch your media collection on a variety of devices.

In the past I’ve found Locationfree a bit limiting to which devices it could be used with but with support for the PSP that is certainly about to change.

eMagin z800 stereoscopic headset

October 31st, 2005 by Marc in Gaming Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets

emagin headset
I used to have a VFX-1 back in the day. In fact I still have it somewhere, despite the fact that it won’t physically connect to any PC made after about 1985. The VFX1, for those of you who weren’t into gadgets back then, was a virtual reality headset. It was basically a motorcycle helmet with little monitors beaming images into your eyes, headphones and a motion tracker. It was supported by a handful of games and the sense of immersion was breathtaking (although whether that sense of immersion was worth the money, time and pain of setting the thing up was another question)

Why am I bringing this up now? Because technology marches on and ExtremeTech are reviewing a modern 3D headset which looks more like sunglasses than a motorcyle helmet. Is proper, immersive, stereoscopic 3D gaming set to make a comeback? Get the lowdown here

Su Doku Board Game

October 30th, 2005 by Al in Gaming Gadgets

Su Doku Board Game
With the help of Carol Vorderman, Su Doku has become more popular than conventional crossword puzzles. Su Doku is a kind of mathematical crossword (now you can’t get much geekier than that).

Su Doku is a very solitary past-time, at least with crosswords you can ask for help. “It has 6 letters, begins with G and is a fun waste of funds” whilst you can’t really ask your mates, “It’s a number between 0-9 but not 4 or 8 and if its 7 the next one can’t be 2″.

The Su Doku Board Game may be the answer to the single player nature of this popular puzzle.

October 26th, 2005 by Keith in Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets

Powered by IBM processor, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 finally revealed its secret that engineered its huge data-crunching processing speed. Earlier last Tuesday, attendees at the In-Stat Fall Processor Forum obtained a sneak preview of what made up next generation Microsoft Corporation’s Xbox 360 game console.

Where in today’s computing desktops, Intel and AMD are looking at dual core CPU. As for Xbox 360, the interior comprises of state-of-the-art THREE PowerPC cores 64-bit CPU, each running at 3.2GHz, the highest core speed achievable, claimed IBM’s chief engineer for Microsoft CPU Project, Jeff Brown. The triple core CPU has utmost capability to handle two threads simultaneously, and at the same time, designed to support high sustained bandwidth, required by the game console. A maximum bandwidth of 21.6Gbps is possible with the current design, especially so much processing power is needed for any intended intensive high-definition graphics games.

Play your PSP on your TV

October 24th, 2005 by Al in Gaming Gadgets

PSP on TV
The PSP may of got a high quality screen but at the end of the day it only 4.3 inches (yeah we know size isn’t everything). It’s now possible to buy a gizmo that lets you play your PSP games on the big screen of your TV (which I must admit does kind of defeat the object of it being a PlayStation Portable).

I’m pretty sure in the future Sony will be releasing an official add-on that will plug-in to one of the available ports, but presently if you wanted to project your PSP to the big screen it involved invalidating your warranty, that is until now…
