Subliminal message to curb gaming addiction

March 15th, 2007 by Edwin in Gaming Gadgets, PC Gadgets

subliminal-msg.jpgGaming can be quite the addiction for many - just take a look at how many kids these days go outdoors and engage in some physical activity when they would rather stay at home cooped up during summer, leveling up their World of Warcraft character instead? The Korea Times has word that a company successfully developed an inaudible sound sequence which could actually help hardcore online gamers take a break from their marathon gaming sessions. After all, there has been cases of people dying after laying a game for too long without taking enough breaks or sleep in between. The Xtive company hopes such incidents won’t occur in the future with their invention.

Sony working on PSP redesign

March 14th, 2007 by Edwin in Gaming Gadgets, Toys

sony-psp-redesign.jpg

Looks like Sony will finally follow the pace set by Nintendo when it comes to hardware redesign, with SCE U.K. Managing Director Ray Maguire sharing his thoughts on a new PSP design. Granted, both the PSOne and PS2 came in new looks towards the end of their lives, so could this mean the same thing with the PSP refresh? While we might not know anything about the release date or pricing details (keep your fingers crossed for a price drop! $250 is still too expensive for a handheld console, and at that price you can already pick up a Nintendo Wii), we do know that Sony will retain what is arguably the PSP’s greatest strength - its large and brilliant screen.

I’ve got this feeling, deep down inside

March 9th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

forcewear1.jpgBringing realism to gaming had always been the intention of game developers, and you can see evidence of this from the natural evolution of 2D games taking on flesh in a 3D world some years ago. In addition, gaming peripherals have been invented to bring gaming to the next level of immersion, such as rumble motors and force feedback steering wheels which are now freely available in any self respecting home steering wheel. TN Games aim to top the list by offering their latest invention, the ForceWear Vest which boasts force feedback technology in order to give you the most realistic gaming experience possible.

Move over, motion controls

March 6th, 2007 by Edwin in Conceptual Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

emotiv.jpg

What’s this motion controls you talk about? Rumble feature? All those pale in comparison when it comes to the gaming controller of choice, especially when faced with Emotiv’s Project Epoc. This spunky start-up from Down Under has developed a brand new gaming peripheral that makes the world of video and computer games accessible to virtually anyone and everyone with a head. How is this possible, you ask? The answer is simple - this helmet like device is placed on top of your nogging, while a processing unit will interpret the information garnered from a series of detection suites that are located all over the helmet. It will be able to detect and measure the player’s discreet emotional states and conscious thoughts, eventually translating those signals into a command that controls your on-screen avatar.

Shocking Operation

March 2nd, 2007 by Al in Gaming Gadgets, Wacky Gadgets

Operation for grown ups

Remember the kids game Operation were you had to use tweezers to extract things from some dorky looking patient without touching the sides, well this is a slightly more adult version called Shocking Autopsy.

With Shocking Autopsy you have to retrieve weapons from a murdered gangster, things like axes, shuriken stars, etc. And when you fail instead of hearing a feeble buzzer you get a good old fashioned electric shock, nice!

Shocking Autopsy is available from Gadget Box for £13.99.

Sony aims to alienate European gamers

February 24th, 2007 by Edwin in Gaming Gadgets

ps3-shaft.jpg

Hardcore and casual gamers in Europe will be incensed all the more when it comes to way Sony handles their European customers. Everyone knows that after the Japanese and North American markets, the European market is also vital for both hardware developers and game publishers worldwide. Unfortunately, at the rate Sony is going by alienating the European gamers, the PlayStation 3 might be a failure long before the current generation console race is over. What makes us say that? For starters, the PS3 will be launched at the end of March, which is more than a quarter later than the U.S. and Japanese markets. In addition, European gamers won’t be able to purchase the lower end 20GB version, instead having to settle for the 60GB model which retails for approximately £100 more than its equivalent across the Atlantic.
