The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, played with a Kinect

by Mark R

Last summer at E3, Microsoft announced at they were putting out some very cool games for the Xbox 360 Kinect.

I will leave it up to you to decide whether or not the holiday games for the Kinect are up to par. One of the biggest games on the market for the Xbox 360 is Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and this man that you see in the upper corner of the image has figured out how to link the Kinect with this popular fantasy game.

You can watch a video after the jump, and I will have to say that it gives me hope for a more active video game future. You can see that sword slashes and spells are done with realistic pushes of the hand, but another hand is controlling the camera. Other commands are done with the power of voice.

PowerSkin Gaming Skin for the Nintendo 3DS

by Edwin

Everyone knows that the Nintendo 3DS’ strong point is not its battery – in fact, while the device has a decent battery life for a first generation 3D capable portable console that does not require you to wear any special glasses, when its performance is stacked up against what its predecessors are able to muster up, clearly it lags behind. Good thing there is always the presence of portable chargers for use in vehicles, not to mention the help from manufacturers such as PowerSkin who roll out accessories such as the Gaming Skin for the Nintendo 3DS.

I guess PowerSkin decided to expand their range of shock-absorbing, battery-boosting smartphone cases by including this new portable charging solution for gaming devices – and what better way to kick off this new line than with the Gaming Skin for Nintendo 3DS? I am quite sure that a PS Vita version is already in the works, and we just do not know it only.

Hyperkin Game Genie offers lifeline for tough DS games

by Edwin

Old school games on the Sega Megadrive and SNES tend to be broken down into two categories – they’re either relatively easy to complete, or the game’s designers are dead set against you seeing the end credits roll. Apart from purchasing walkthroughs in the form of books (there was no such thing known as Gamefaqs.com back then, younglings), you could either get into contact with the local video game maestro and ask his or her help through a particular dungeon. That is, until the Game Genie attachment came along, opening up an entire world of gaming possibilities that turned you into a gaming god (aka cheating).

Well, it has been more than a decade now, and a somewhat similar device makes a return in the form of the Hyperkin Game Genie, where $19.99 is all you need to fork out to unlock secret codes hidden in your favorite Nintendo DS video games. It will be compatible with 3DS, DSi, DSi XL, DS Lite and DS handheld consoles, offering you the opportunity to check out the hidden secrets of games as well as unlocking the potential to more than 300 DS titles. Heck, it can also be upgraded thanks to the DS WiFi Receiver.

SupaBoy Handheld Video Game Console

by Edwin

Roll back the gaming years with something retro for your home this Christmas – I’m talking about the SupaBoy Handheld Video Game Console here. This little puppy was specially designed to look like that of your classic SNES controller for very good reason. After all, your hands would probably gain their old strength the moment they take a grip of the SupaBoy, just like how the character King Theoden from the second part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was told by Gandalf to remember his old strength better when his fingers grasped his own sword. All those classic Street Fighter II combos ought to flow through without you batting an eyelid after a while.

As mentioned, the Supa Sweet Handheld Console is specially shaped like a SNES controller, complete with its own 3.5″ display, not to mention the ability to handle both SNES as well as Super Famicom cartridges. I know that the SupaBoy Handheld Video Game Console has been in development for a long time already, but it is nice to see that the device is finally being launched in time for the Christmas shopping season. More on the SupaBoy in the extended post.

Urinals get more interesting with built-in games

by Edwin

Guys have basically two choices when it comes to relieving themselves at the urinal – to look down, or look ahead. Looking to the left or right and starting up a conversation with the person next to you is more often than not a big no-no in most guys’ books, after all, it is not going to make anyone more comfortable at all, and neither is it good form to take a peek at your neighbor’s goods.

Here is something to keep you occupied just in case you feel that you need to shoot your mouth off – Captive Media has come up with a urinal mounted, urine-controlled games console – exclusively for men, of course. Talk about a new kind of hands-free gaming, as there is no controller for you to work around with, making this “wee” time different from Nintendo’s Wii…

You know how it is when the in-game situation gets tough as nails, and your palms start to sweat a whole lot? Well, just like how there is this seat cooling pad available for office chairs as well as car seats, so too, do gaming controllers. The £22.99 Air Flo Controller will cater for PS3 owners, where it sports built-in fans that is capable of circulating a cooling breeze around your hands as you get your game on. All you need to do is plug in this sleek and ergonomic device, where both the buttons as well as the fans will star to glow in an icy blue colour. You can adjust the fan speeds in two different configurations, where the patented Air Flo technology will help keep your clammy palms nice and cool as you start dispatching off your opponents with skill and expertise.

The Air Flo Controller is capable of retaining all the essentials with the PS3 controller, including the dual rumble function, responsive buttons and reverse analog sticks. You won’t be able to go wireless with this though, as the Air Flo ergonomic controller has a 3 meter cord to keep it connected.

Atari Flashback 3 offers you old school gaming

by Edwin

Now here is something that you might want to consider after getting your daily fix of PS3 as well as Xbox 360 (the Wii does not really count since the graphics are not exactly worth looking into) – the Atari Flashback 3, and as its name implies, it offers a blast from the past. Retailing for just £39.99 a pop, it will let the younger generation in your home enjoy what used to occupy your time back in the days when you were a wee lad. Yes sir, it even comes with its own set of old school joysticks to set the classic gaming mood in your home.

Just plug them into the console, and you will enter a “time machine” of sorts, with everyone in the room enjoying what real gameplay is all about, without having to worry about how many pixels it is able to cram into the screen. Forget about Angry Birds or Call of Duty, this is something you might want to look into if you want to take a trip down memory lane.

Big Fish Games rolls out Play Instantly! cloud gaming service

by Edwin

Casual games seem to be all the rage these days, starting off with Bejeweled on the desktop computer all those years ago, where hours upon hours of productivity were seemingly lost even though employees looked “hardworking” from behind the monitor. Well, casual gaming has certainly taken over the mainstream consciousness with the number of smartphones, portable media players like the iPod touch, and the old mainstay of portable gaming consoles such as the Nintendo 3DS and soon-to-come PlayStation Vita, all permeating every bit of our lives. If you can’t beat ‘em, why not join ‘em instead? I guess this is why Big Fish Games has introduced the first cloud gaming service for mobile devices, calling it Play Instantly! – how apt, don’t you think so?
