Sega Dreamcast finds renewed life as a guitar

July 20th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

sega-dreamcast-guitar.jpg

What do you do with a discarded game console that is a couple of generations behind? Why, you recycle it, of course! This beloved Sega Dreamcast has been modified and turned into a guitar, including one of its controllers. Instead of the usual half dozen strings, there are only half of them left as the others have already broke. You’ll need a pretty healthy amount of D.I.Y. and musical skills to cobble one together though. Now this is what I call the 21st century version of Desperado…

Space Invaders used to tell time

July 17th, 2007 by Edwin in DIY Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

space-invaders-clock.jpgElectronics enthusiast Jason Hickner has gone retro by conjuring up this cool clock that tells the time via a game of Space Invaders. All he needed was an old Sony portable TV and a circuit that generates the video to create the game. To tell the time, each extra life shows the hours, while every alien represents one minute. For those who are too busy to count aliens at a glance, the last four digits of the high score will also do the trick.

XCM Mini Guitar for pint sized gaming

July 14th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

xfps-miniguitar.jpg

Guitar Hero 2 was definitely a big hit on the previous generation of consoles (specifically the Xbox and PS2), but sometimes we just want to laze on a couch while going through the motions of Guitar Hero 2. Unfortunately, the full-sized guitar doesn’t allow you that luxury, which is why this XCM Mini Guitar enables you to do exactly that by coming in a palm-friendly size. The body is made from actual wood like a real guitar, so you don’t have to worry about cheap plastic parts. Additional features include a heavy duty metal whammy bar and buttons located along the guitar’s neck that light up.

Nyko caters for gaming groups with Wii Party Station

July 12th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

nyko-party-station.jpg

Most people would agree that playing the Wii is a social experience, and it is always fun to have some friends and family over to sweat it out with each other. What better way to hold a Wii party than to have the Nyko Party Station? This unique peripheral is meant to sit in the middle of your living room, featuring slots for 4 Wiimotes, a storage drawer for Wii accessories, a hand cooling fan, 4 numeric LED displays for group scores, 4 freezable cup holders, and get this - a center bowl with enough room to store chips and snacks for everyone. I guess having clean Wiimotes after snacking on some Doritos and Lays is out of the question. The Nyko Party Station retails for $24.99.

Sony unveils new PSP

July 12th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets

new-slim-psp.jpg

Looks like word on a new PSP is not a rumor after all, but gospel truth. Unfortunately, the revamped PSP did not come with what most people are looking forward to - the supposed 8GB of flash memory as well as a second analog control. What this new PSP has is a lighter and slimmer body, weighing 33% less while being 19% slimmer than the previous model. The most notable addition would be a TV out port that enables you to play your games or watch movies when hooked up to a big screen TV. Not only that, the new PSP comes in a bunch of new colors when it is released this September. I suppose this will force the hand of fence sitters, while those who already own a PSP won’t be making an upgrade anytime soon.

Movie rentals from Disney on Xbox Live

July 12th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets, Software

xbox-live-disney-abc.jpg

Disney-ABC has teamed up with Microsoft to allow Xbox 360 owners to rent movies online, courtesy of the Xbox Live service. Since the Xbox 360 already comes with integrated networking capabilities, it makes sense to give them access to online game demo downloads, simple arcade games, videos, and movies. Movies from Disney studios aren’t the only fare up on offer, as the spread includes titles from Miramax and Touchstone Pictures.

Nintendo Wii offers healthy game

July 12th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets, Home Gadgets

wii-fit.jpgMention video games to any parent and most of them will often roll their eyes in disgust, as they know just how addictive those games can get. In fact, there is a very negative connotation to video games for the better part of the last few years due to a higher level of obesity among children, where even high school shootings and violent behaviour has been attributed to this “electronic scourge”. Nintendo has gone a long way in rolling back those images though with their lineup of family friendly gaming titles as well as massive hardware hits in the form of the still scarce Wii and the phenomenal DS Lite. There is a new game being touted by Nintendo to keep gamers fit in the process, and it goes by the title of Wii Fit.
