Amazon Kindle - The Wireless Electronic Book

November 20th, 2007 by Al in Electronic Gadgets, Gadget Gift Ideas

Amazon Kindle

It looks like electronic paper is finally going to become reality thanks to the Amazon Kindle and I must admit it looks pretty cool.

Three years ago, we set out to design and build an entirely new class of device—a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. The result is Amazon Kindle.

We designed Kindle to provide an exceptional reading experience. Thanks to electronic paper, a revolutionary new display technology, reading Kindle’s screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper—and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen. Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot and is designed for ambidextrous use so both “lefties” and “righties” can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time.

We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. No PC and no syncing needed. Using the same 3G network as advanced cell phones, we deliver your content using our own wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet. Unlike WiFi, you’ll never need to locate a hotspot. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills—we take care of the hassles so you can just read.

With Whispernet, you can be anywhere, think of a book, and get it in one minute. Similarly, your content automatically comes to you, wherever you are. Newspaper subscriptions are delivered wirelessly each morning. Most magazines arrive before they hit newsstands. Haven’t read the book for tomorrow night’s book club? Get it in a minute. Finished your book in the airport? Download the sequel while you board the plane. Whether you’re in the mood for something serious or hilarious, lighthearted or studious, Kindle delivers your spontaneous reading choices on demand.

The Kindle is due to ship November 29, 2007 and has a somewhat hefty price tag of $399.00, found via gadgets.fosfor.

Musical gifts: Real or fake music? Guitar Hero or Ukulele?

November 19th, 2007 by Andi in Audio/Video Gadgets, Gadget Gift Ideas, Miscellaneous Gadgets, Retro Gadgets
musical notes

I couldn’t help but notice the success of Guitar Hero, Karaoke games, and the general transition to simulated music. Because such a game becomes rewarding very quickly, many ‘play’ the simulated instruments instead of choosing to make real music. This pains me a lot, even more so because I’ve been playing the guitar for years.

This summer however I discovered a great little instrument, that becomes rewarding in the first day, and even in the first hour. While I was abroad in the summer holidays, I went to a music shop to buy some strings and picks for my guitar, which was home (much to heavy to carry around while traveling). That, day, I discovered the Ukulele.

Cological Marble Run Construction Set

November 19th, 2007 by Mark R in Childrens Gadgets, Gadget Gift Ideas, Toys

Marble Run Set

Ever heard of Rube Goldburg? I’ve discovered that people who don’t know who Rube Goldberg is know of his work. He was the one who drew these odd contraptions that worked in odd ways, such as a roller skate attacked to a needle, which pops a balloon, which in turn does something else.

Goldburg’s contraptions always started with a ball rolling, and that is what the Cological Marble Run Construction Set is supposed to play off of. This little playset from Think Geek will give you everything that you want for ball-rolling action better than the Mouse Trap game. This will especially be popular with the Lego crowd, as they can make machines that work with no bumpy parts to inhibit the rolling of the marble.

Anti-gravity Floating Globe

November 17th, 2007 by Al in Gadget Gift Ideas

Anti-gravity Globe

I’m a sucker for cool looking gadgets and this one certainly fits the bill, the anti-gravity globe.

The globe floats as if by magic a few inches above the base, which will likely be the coolest ornament in a room, but how does it work?

It’s simple really. The globe itself is very light in weight. There is a precisely placed magnet located at the inside top of the globe. Once you plug in the heavily weighted base, and carefully place the globe over top the center of the base, a combination of sensors and micro-processors help to calibrate the embedded electromagnet in the base to properly suspend the globe.

You can buy the anti-gravity globe for $79.99.

PhotoVu rolls out new wireless digital photo frame

November 17th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Gadget Gift Ideas, Home Gadgets

photovu-17.jpg

PhotoVu has long been a household name where digital photo frames are concerned, so when word of a new 17″ widescreen digital photo frame from the company rolled out, naturally one would be excited at the prospect of having a decent display instead of those puny 7″ photo frames that aren’t too easy on the eyes after a short while. The “culprit” in question this time is the PV1765w, and it is no less than a full featured digital photo frame that comes complete with a 17″ widescreen LCD panel display in a 16:10 widescreen format to provide everyone with an optimum viewing experience for photos taken from today’s high resolution digital cameras. Sounds pretty neat to me, since a tiny digital photo frame doesn’t really show off all the detail and splendor of images snapped with your D-SLR camera, let alone a standard 8-megapixel point-and-shoot camera.
