Night vision goggles now showing in color

March 28th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Conceptual Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets

colorpath-goggles.jpgMost of us have grown up watching more than enough war and science fiction movies to know that night vision images are often seen as an eclectic mix of green and black. Tenebraex has upped the ante by developing a pair of goggles that help both soldiers and physicians to see an entire spectrum of colors at night - a vast improvement over what is currently available in the market. These goggles will be made available to the Army for approximately $6,000 a pop, making it out of reach for the average Joe.

Projector goes mobile thanks to Texas Instruments

March 28th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets

pico-projector.jpgTexas Instruments demonstrated its latest DLP prototype that is way smaller than what you normally see on the market. This Pico projector is small enough to be placed on your finger tips with space to spare. The advent of such technology means future devices will be able to project its content without having to lug around a huge and heavy projector, expanding the horizons of cellphones, digital cameras, and portable media players by turning them into mobile cinemas. All you need is some popcorn and a fair amount of space on a preferably white wall and you’re good to go. Just make sure the surrounding environment is not too bright as one can presume such a projector won’t feature brightness levels that are up to par with today’s boardroom offerings.

Brain training in a small package

March 27th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Toys

mini-brain-trainer.jpgBrain training looks set to be all the rage these days, judging by the amount of software (read: games) that challenge your pre-frontal cortex, especially on the Nintendo DS. What happens if you’re rather broke at the moment and is unable to fork out enough dough to pick up one of those handheld consoles? You do, after all, need to keep your brain razor sharp in thinking so you will be able to conjure up the next multi-million dollar business plan in order to snag yourself one of those snazzy portable consoles from Nintendo. The Mini Brain Trainer does exactly this, ensuring your brain stays on its toes no matter what your current age is.

Flexible transparent battery in the works

March 26th, 2007 by Edwin in Conceptual Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets

see-thru-batt.jpgAt first glance, the square on the right actually looks like a transparent film of some sort, but you will be surprised to know that it is actually a battery. I know I was surprised myself, but what we see is actually a polymer based rechargeable battery developed by Japanese scientists from the Waseda University. This unique battery is made from a 200 nanometre thick (or should the right word be thin?) redox-active organic polymer film that come with nitroxide radical groups attached to it. These nitroxide radical groups act as charge carriers, offering a high charge/discharge capacity thanks to the high radical density. Other than this advantage over regular batteries, it was interesting to note that the power rate performance is nothing short of jaw dropping - it takes a mere minute to charge the battery fully and boasts a superior cycle life of over a thousand cycles.

Home Joule checks on power usage

March 26th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Home Gadgets

home-joule.jpgThose living in the Big Apple will definitely fall in love with the Home Joule device. What does it do exactly, you ask? For starters, all you need to do is plug it into any available wall outlet and turn it on. The device features both Demand Response Event Notification and Peak Load Advisory Notification to all current New York City residents and businesses, displaying a green glow when there is plenty of power available and turning to red whenever power demand is critical and supply is running at a dangerous level. Whenever you reduce your power demand when the electric grid is under stress, you will be able to receive some cash payments for this green commitment since energy prices fluctuate by the hour.

Lumus PD-20, a unique piece of eyewear

March 25th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets

lumavision.jpgYou know how those iPod video glasses are like, trying to give you a big screen experience while keeping you oblivious to the rest of the world. Unfortunately, being blind to the rest of the world while enjoying your favorite movie isn’t exactly my idea of having a good time. The Lumus PD-20 is a small step towards realizing the dream of a pair of video glasses, offering a reflection from a Light-guide Optical Element (LOE) that is placed directly in the eye’s line of sight, thanks to the image source which is projected from the box attached to the frame.

March 24th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets

visual-planet.jpgYou’re a store owner and would love to attract customers even while you’re not around - what are the options that you have up your sleeve? For starters, there is always the Internet where you get to design your very own virtual store, but what happens if you don’t sell products online, leaving not much content except that of your opening and closing hours as well as the occasional sale announcement? You would be surprised to see how many people actually walk by your store up till the wee hours of the morning, and these people are the very ones that your online presence would have missed. Visual Planet has a solution to this dilemma in the form of a holographic touchscreen that aims to attract the attention of anyone walking by, regardless of whether the store is open or not.

Super Mario Sound Blocks arrive

March 24th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Toys

mario-sound-blocks.jpg

I don’t know about you, but it can safely be said that no one can claim to be a gamer if he or she has not yet picked up a single Mario title and played it to the death. How can anyone not love Mario? And we’re not talking about his forays into a whole range of other activities such as baseball, golf, RPGs, and even party games, but the staple diet of platformers alone. Anyone who has picked up any Mario platform title would definitely have heard of all the sounds that come associated with knocking those blocks in order to gain something, and somehow or rather those sounds have remained seared in our consciousness forever due to their universal appeal and simplicity.
