Spring might have just arrived, but what most of us look forward to is the summer. After all, who wouldn’t want longer days and more sunlight to bathe in, while children absolutely love the long break for them to roll around the hills stay up to pace with their computer games. As with sunbathing, holding a BBQ cookout is synonymous with summer activities, which is why those of you who do not yet have a grill ought to seriously consider the Memphis Barbecue. What’s the reason behind this, you ask? Aren’t all BBQ grills the same? Apparently not as the Memphis proves, boasting MP3 playback capability via a hidden speaker located at the cooker’s front panel.

March 31st, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets
When you talk about cardiac monitoring devices, most of the time the image that comes into mind is some bulky piece of electronics. The CardioPocket aims to change that image by offering a leather wallet that can be used to carry bills, credit cards, ID, and other wallet-y items, doubling up as a 1-lead ECG transmitter which can be used to diagnose heart rhythm disturbances. The ECG transmitter within will be able to encourage the subscriber to pick up the phone and contact the Monitor Center pronto whenever any discomfort arises. All the user needs to do is place the wallet against the chest while using a cellphone or standard telephone to transmit a real-time ECG strip within seconds for an immediate consultation.
OCZ Trifecta a multi-tasker
March 29th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Mobile Phones, PC Gadgets, USB Gadgets
OCZ Technology has been releasing its fair share of innovative and ultra-high performance memory products in the past, and this time the OCZ Trifecta SD card series has come under the spotlight, offering a unique three-in-one solution for those who deal with a myriad of devices. What makes the OCZ Trifecta SD card stand out from the rest is its form factor - it acts as a standard SD card to cater for devices such as digital cameras and digital video camcorders, but for smaller devices such as newer cellphones and portable media players, a microSD card is required and the OCZ Trifecta easily fills this need by removing the microSD portion of the card. Whenever you need to transfer data to a computer or are in need of an impromptu USB flash drive, just remove the bottom part of the OCZ Trifecta to reveal a USB connector and plug it into any available USB port.
Passengers fitted to the T
March 29th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets
Passengers at the Philadelphia Airport will soon be able to kill time by stepping into the Virtual Fitting Room to see if their intended purchases fit them to a T (pun not intended) before busting out that credit card. This is a free service made available to all passengers, and it definitely goes a long way in helping online shoppers get the perfect fit without even shedding a single piece of clothing in the process. All the passenger needs to do is stand fully clothed in the middle of the Virtual Fitting Room for approximately 10 seconds and let the “antenna wand” pass around him/her. This wand will subsequently collect more than 200,000 data points which are subsequently matched against measurements of brand name clothing in the company’s database.
Night vision goggles now showing in color
March 28th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Conceptual Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets
Most of us have grown up watching more than enough war and science fiction movies to know that night vision images are often seen as an eclectic mix of green and black. Tenebraex has upped the ante by developing a pair of goggles that help both soldiers and physicians to see an entire spectrum of colors at night - a vast improvement over what is currently available in the market. These goggles will be made available to the Army for approximately $6,000 a pop, making it out of reach for the average Joe.
Projector goes mobile thanks to Texas Instruments
March 28th, 2007 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets
Texas Instruments demonstrated its latest DLP prototype that is way smaller than what you normally see on the market. This Pico projector is small enough to be placed on your finger tips with space to spare. The advent of such technology means future devices will be able to project its content without having to lug around a huge and heavy projector, expanding the horizons of cellphones, digital cameras, and portable media players by turning them into mobile cinemas. All you need is some popcorn and a fair amount of space on a preferably white wall and you’re good to go. Just make sure the surrounding environment is not too bright as one can presume such a projector won’t feature brightness levels that are up to par with today’s boardroom offerings.
Brain training in a small package
March 27th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Toys
Brain training looks set to be all the rage these days, judging by the amount of software (read: games) that challenge your pre-frontal cortex, especially on the Nintendo DS. What happens if you’re rather broke at the moment and is unable to fork out enough dough to pick up one of those handheld consoles? You do, after all, need to keep your brain razor sharp in thinking so you will be able to conjure up the next multi-million dollar business plan in order to snag yourself one of those snazzy portable consoles from Nintendo. The Mini Brain Trainer does exactly this, ensuring your brain stays on its toes no matter what your current age is.
Flexible transparent battery in the works
March 26th, 2007 by Edwin in Conceptual Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets
At first glance, the square on the right actually looks like a transparent film of some sort, but you will be surprised to know that it is actually a battery. I know I was surprised myself, but what we see is actually a polymer based rechargeable battery developed by Japanese scientists from the Waseda University. This unique battery is made from a 200 nanometre thick (or should the right word be thin?) redox-active organic polymer film that come with nitroxide radical groups attached to it. These nitroxide radical groups act as charge carriers, offering a high charge/discharge capacity thanks to the high radical density. Other than this advantage over regular batteries, it was interesting to note that the power rate performance is nothing short of jaw dropping - it takes a mere minute to charge the battery fully and boasts a superior cycle life of over a thousand cycles.
