Sony concepts go green

June 6th, 2007 by Edwin in Conceptual Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

sony-odo.jpg

Sony goes green with a bunch of devices that won’t ever need recharging since power can be obtained at a moment’s notice. While this morsel of news sounds great, I’m gutted to know that the devices we are going to touch on today are just concepts and won’t materialize in the corporeal world anytime soon. Known as Odo concepts, the idea behind each device is certainly exciting, and they come with aesthetically pleasing lines to boot. To whet your appetite, the entire Odo range consists of different devices, ranging from digital cameras to an image/movie viewer - basically anything that drains battery power at a much faster rate when compared to the relatively sloth-like analog radio.

Scientists create digital paper that talks

June 6th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Tech News

talking-paper.jpg“Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” is a famous line worldwide uttered by the evil queen in the classic Snow White cartoon. While her mirror comes with magical properties that enable it to come up with a skewed reply in queen’s favor most of the time, we folks don’t have to rely on hocus pocus as there is always technology to perform “magic”. Researchers from Mid Sweden University have successfully developed an interactive paper billboard that is smart enough to emit recorded sound in response to a user’s touch, thanks to the utilization of conductive inks and printed speakers.

Get Dad a hard drive clock

June 6th, 2007 by Edwin in Cool Clocks, Electronic Gadgets, Gadget Gift Ideas

hard-drive-desk-clock.jpg

Dads seem to be on the losing end each Father’s Day, considering the amount of ties, handkerchiefs, belts, and wallets they have amassed over the years. Why not take a different approach this year by getting something techy and help keep the environment clean at the same time? The Hard Drive Desk Clock fits the bill perfectly as it uses parts from a recycled network server hard drive equipped with a quartz clock motor for accurate timekeeping.

Kansei robot from Japan gives me the creeps

June 6th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Robot Gadgets

kansei.jpg

Japanese seem to love robots of all kinds, and the Kansei robot is the latest in line to join the fray. What makes this robot very much different from the rest of his electronic brethren is the very fact that he responds to word associations, thanks to a silicon face mask and 19 movable parts. Kansei is able to express up to 36 facial expressions altogether from a self-updating online database of half a million words. For example, whenever he hears the word ‘bomb’, he’ll frown, mention ’sushi’ and he’ll smile (I would’ve grinned as I absolutely love sushi). The word ‘president’ brings about a scared and disgusted look.
