Twilight Umbrellas phase through colors

October 13th, 2008 by Ally in Electronic Gadgets

If you’re tired of dreary rainy days getting the best of you, you might look into one of these Twilight Umbrellas.  This isn’t the first time Twilight Umbrellas have made their way onto the site, it originally made its appearance a couple years back.  Since then, they’ve changed where the lights are placed though and have a total of three different types of umbrellas.  From what I can tell they don’t even offer the old style of umbrellas.  Now they offer ways to either light up the sky or light up both the sky and the ground.

Energy Seed: Street lamps powered by low-life batteries

October 13th, 2008 by Mark R in Conceptual Gadgets, Eco Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets

Some of you might have seen the newly released film City of Ember, a science fiction adventure story that takes place in a civilization that had to go underground due to some worldwide disaster. In the story, the generator that powers the subterranean town has reached the end of its 200-year lifespan, and no one knows what to do.

I suppose films like this are symbolic of the fears that we all have: that some day all our energy will just plain run out. A South Korean designer named Sung Woo Park has come up with a way to save energy.

This concept, known as Energy Seed, is a street lamp that runs on discarded batteries. Just picture taking your batteries to the recycling plant, but you will be putting them into specially sized tubes in the Energy Seed. These batteries are then stacked upon each other, and the combined power of these batteries work together to power a street lamp.

Slingbox SlingCatcher unveiled

October 10th, 2008 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Home Gadgets, Home Theater

Slingbox has just released yet another device for the living room, and this time round, this is a universal media player that will deliver broadcast TV, Internet video and personal content to the TV seamlessly. Fact of the matter is this - the SlingCatcher could eventually end up to be one of the more flexible Internet video devices released in recent memory. Slingbox did go as far as to describe the SlingCatcher being able to stream video from network TV sites such as ABC.com, videon content sites like Hulu.com and CollegeHumor.com, and community video sites such as YouTube.com. With a whole lot of videos for you to view, it makes me wonder whether you will have the time to watch all of them or not, or will it be relegated to certain dusty sectors of your hard drive in due time, ever waiting for “tomorrow” before it is viewed.

Sony OLED Flexible Display: I’m Loving It

October 6th, 2008 by Mark R in Electronic Gadgets, Home Theater, Tech News

Sure, this isn’t the first time that we reported on Sony’s OLEDs before. First unveiled at CES in January, these babies have been on a lot of gadget lovers’ minds ever since. The Sony wireless XEL-1 TV is on sale for about $2,500, and the saga of the Sony OLED continues with a new development of a flexible 11-inch display.

This pliable TV still has its 0.3mm thickness (or thinness) which is easy enough to get a paper cut, or, in this case, a screen cut. These OLEDs don’t come cheap, and because this tech is so new, it probably won’t get any cheaper any time soon. Once it does, just imagine the possibilities!

72″ 3D display needs no glasses

October 5th, 2008 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets

Most of us know that 3D displays require a special set of glasses, and so far no fashion house has come up with frames that help you look cool instead of a bona fide dork for obvious reasons - style and geeks tend to be at loggerheads. Good thing the geeks are smart enough to come up with a 72 “3D display that not only gives you the whole 3D works, you can view it without having to wear any silly special glasses. This new display is a collaboration between Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and Victor Company of Japan Ltd,, and is currently on display at CEATEC Japan 2008. Features include full HD resolution at 1,920 x 1,080, and NICT hopes to commercialized this display by the year 2011.
