Solar Pool Light

by Edwin

There is nothing quite like the use of solar power to make sure that there is still an earth around for the next generation to live in. After all, using fossil fuels for so long has clogged up our atmosphere, not to mention having countries go to war just to get a spoil of its natural resources.

Solar power might not have an efficiency level that is agreeable to most people just yet, but it is enough for basic use such as in the case of the Solar Pool Light. This device can be set up anywhere within a pool sans wires, where it will deliver bright underwater illumination without missing a beat. A couple of solar panels are located on the top of the unit to provide adequate juice for the internal rechargeable batteries, delivering up to 10 hours of light after 10 hours of sun exposure. That’s pretty good returns – an hour of light for an hour of juice.

Agility Saietta R Bike

by Edwin

Electric vehicles seem to be all the rage these days, so you might be interested to ride into the sunset with the Agility Saietta R Bike – a cool looking two-wheeler that looks as though it comes from the future. Of course, the £13,570 price tag is not going to make it appealing to everybody at first glance, but hear me out as I list down what’s so great about this.

First of all, you need not worry about traffic jams since you can always zip yourself around town on this, squeezing between cars to get from point A to point B within the fastest time possible. Apart from that, you don’t have to cram yourself into public transport like you’re part of a sardine tin, and best of all is, the spare seat behind is perfect for you to pick up chicks (if you’re single, of course) as it looks totally hot.

With the Saietta R’s electric motor in action, all the bulk associated with how a standard bike should look like has been removed, and hence the shape and model have evolved to resemble something from the future. This lightweight and environmentally-friendly dream ride might not glow like something out of Tron, but it will still turn heads around and eyes green as you cruise down the street on this.

Billboard is powered by oranges

by Mark R

There is a popular science lesson that every high school physics or chemistry teacher must perform. It involves using foods to power a small light bulb, along with some nails and wire.

Citrus fruits, for example, are acidic and their juice helps to conduct electricity. It would appear that if you had enough oranges, you could power something big, like a billboard.

Fortunately, Tropicana has plenty of oranges, and what better promotion for their orange juice than this? Thousands of oranges have been used, and it took 3 months of testing before it worked, which also uses thousands of copper and zinc spikes to make it work.

Electric Comfort Bicycle

by Edwin

Cars might have gone electric to a certain degree, but that doesn’t mean other modes of transportation like the motorcycle and bicycle can’t either. This is where the Electric Comfort Bicycle makes a splash – it was specially designed to take its riders on extended tours in unequaled comfort. Using a 500-watt electric motor that will help you tackle tough uphills, it is also a joy to breeze downhill or cruise through flats without bulging up those calf muscles even more.

For larger sized folks, fret not about a sore rear end after a hard day of pedalling – after all, the Electric Comfort Bicycle comes with a generously padded triangle seat as well as 26″ balloon tires to deliver a soft yet stable journey. With padded wrap-around handlebars that are able to reach back to riders for a relaxed, upright riding experience, it will help keep the arms, back, and neck aligned for optimal comfort.

A twist of the right handlebar will let you determine the motor’s variable speed, while pushing a button with your thumb helps you cycle through all half dozen gears. With a maximum cruising speed of 20 mph on flats using just the motor, you can always top that by using your legs. A full charge is said to deliver up to 30 miles of coasting, but that of course depends on the type of terrain you subject the bike to as well as your weight. The Electric Comfort Bicycle can be yours for $2,800. On second thought, getting a used car might be more fun…

The Select Air System – Wireless Temperature Control, for Every Room

by Julie

I don’t know how it’s been for you guys this winter, but here in the New York area it has been brutal. Too much snow, and bitterly cold. The heat was on at our house 24/7 and I have the skin of an alligator to prove it, and the heating bill, well, let’s just say if we opt not to pay for my daughters college, we should be okay.

But I have 10 years to replenish the college fund, so its a good thing that Advector Systems has developed the Select Air System, a fully wireless and automated residential zoning system that puts you in control of your energy usage, comfort and your budget.  The wireless Select Air System allows you to have a virtual thermostat in EVERY room of your house. You don’t leave the lights on in rooms your not using, why should you heat or cool them?

“Not only will you be able to set different temperatures in every room for added comfort, but you will be able to limit wasted energy associated with heating and cooling empty rooms,” explained Boris Medic, Advector System Managing Director and Select Air System Designer. WHIM architecture’s “Recycled Island” is made of garbage

by Mark R

This is the “Recycled Island”, designed by a Dutch architect named Ramon Knoester. His firm, Whim Architecture, is working on this island made of garbage with the help of a grant from the Netherlands Architecture Fund.

The “Recycled Island” solves a lot of problems that the Earth is experiencing. As we have learned from the Superman movies, that land is something “that they ain’t making any more of”. Considering that the oceans take up more than half of the earth, wouldn’t it be nice if we could settle on them by making our own islands?

After all, there is already a “Great Garbage Patch” in the Pacific Ocean, and one might as well make use of all that trash floating on the surface. Of course, that sounds easy, but I am certain it is a harder undertaking than what I just wrote.

H2O Powered Shower Radio

by Edwin

Singing while you’re in the shower is definitely something that some of us indulge in – heck, it might even be your hobby. Well, just in case you don’t want to let everyone know how out of tune your voice is, why not enlist the help of a radio DJ to play your favorite tunes once in a while? The H2O Powered Shower Radio, as its name suggests, will be able to stand up to your shower moments without missing a beat.

Retailing for £34.99 a pop, this eco-friendly FM radio relies on the clever implementation of hydrodynamics in order to generate energy while juicing up its onboard battery. It is a snap to fit into your existing bathroom set up, as you do not need a rocket science degree to make sure the stylish radio is in line with your shower hose so that water will flow through its micro turbine to deliver some much needed power. Now to work on those vocals…

Halco Amber Bulbs – Light the Way for Baby Sea Turtles

by Julie

Dallas Light Bulb, a leader in consumer lighting products, is selling Halco LED amber colored lightbulbs to hotels in Miami Beach, Florida, in the hopes that they can meet the standards for Turtle Light Certification. The amber light is being used instead of traditional, white light to combat turtle nesting and hatchling issues caused by exterior, artificial lighting on beachfront properties.

Florida’s turtle nesting beaches seem to face many natural and unnatural threats. Forty percent of the beaches are classified as eroded from natural causes. Seawalls and imported sand have negatively impacted sea turtle nesting habits and changed the natural ecosystems, making some areas inhospitable nesting sites, and most of all, beachfront development has posed a formidable threat because the artificial lighting of beach areas disorients baby turtles and they end up dying from lack of water.
