Don’t drop the soap, use a Soap Bank

February 11th, 2008 by Chris in Conceptual Gadgets, Eco Gadgets, Home Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets

Soap Bank

It’s been a while since I’ve used bar soap in the shower. No, I bathe on a regular basis and all, but I’ve found it much easier to just use a liquid soap, as you don’t really worry about dropping it, and it always seems to get a better lather. Sure, I could get a soap-on-a-rope, but I’d still have the lathering issue (and a lot of spare rope). Here’s a concept that would make it much easier to keep your soap off the ground, while making sure that you get lots of suds to clean with.

Revolution Door being developed

February 8th, 2008 by Edwin in Conceptual Gadgets, Eco Gadgets

revolution-door.jpg

A door is a door is a door, or is it? Fluxxlab from New York is working on their Revolution Doors that comes with a turbine powered by folks who pass through it whenever they enter or exit the building - sounds like the perfect door to install in all those glitzy casinos in Las Vegas considering the sheer amount of human traffic there. Taking cues from the idea of how water passes through a turbine and powering it, the Revolution Door boasts a redesigned central core that is capable of converting the motion of a spinning door into electricity efficiently. I wonder just how much in power bills can the building management save each month with this implemented.

Utilize the power of the sun for extra talk time

February 6th, 2008 by Chris in Eco Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Mobile Phones

Solar Cell Phone Charger

These days people seem to be taking more notice of the amount of energy their gadgets use. I’m not talking about how long their batteries last, but rather they are being more conscious about their impact on the environment. The easiest “green” power source that can be incorporated into many gadgets is from our sun. I’ve seen few practical solar designs for recharging phones, however, this latest product from Strap-Ya may be something worth looking into.

Digital camera rain cover

February 2nd, 2008 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Eco Gadgets

hydrophobia-300-600.jpgIf you think that getting a waterproof digital camera case for your precious photo-snapping device might be a bit over the top, why not settle for the Hydrophobia 300 - 600? This is touted to be the first rain cover that was meant to be pre-mounted for quick deployment. Perfect for those who work in the field and don’t want the unpredictable weather to spoil not only the shot but equipment, it can be deployed quickly and without hassle. The Hydrophobia is capable of fitting over a 300 f2.8, 400 f2.8, 500 f4, and 600 f4 lenses, ideally pitting it in the sports and nature photography markets. The fabric used claims to be 10 times more waterproof than standard fabric, relying on a “film” on the underside instead of a “spray” coating. Waterproof tape is applied to all seams to create a seemingly and thoroughly waterproof cover. No idea on how much it costs though.

Bicycle Powered Mobile Phone Center

January 20th, 2008 by Edwin in Eco Gadgets, Mobile Phones

Talk about going green with the Bicycle Powered Mobile Phone Center. This transporting phone center does not need any AC power in order to juice up exhausted batteries, and the best part is the battery can also be charged whilst the unit is stationary. Here’s an excerpt on how it works.

The one essential thing that a cell phone has that a call shop doesn’t is a battery, so using parts found in a junk yard we created a constantly recharging battery by pedal power. Electricity is generated as the person is traveling to his destination, if the battery runs low at the destination he can drop the kick stand and start cycling in place. Generating electricity from pedaling allows us to travel to the central park, a remote town or a big festival increasing access to inexpensive telephony anywhere. Because this bike is built for the developing world we had to use parts that could be easily found. To generate the electricity we used an old car alternator that sends the electricity generated to a car battery. The electricity stored in the battery is accessed by an old computer UPS to convert the electricity to 110V.

Handpresso: For Coffee Lovers On The Go

January 11th, 2008 by Carolyn in Cooking Gadgets, Eco Gadgets, Home Gadgets, Kitchen Gadgets

handpresso.jpgYou know you’ve been there. You’ve been traveling and all you want is a nice hot espresso. You head to a national chain coffee shop (rhymes with Car Ducks) to get your fix. But wait! They burn the crap out of it! Now your espresso fix is ruined. Or what if you’re miles and miles away from any civilized place with an espresso machine - what do you do then?

The Handpresso is an innovative gadget that allows you (with the purchase of their specialized coffee pods) to brew a nice cup of espresso with just hot water! The description from the website:

Handpresso Wild is at the core of the NOMADIC ESPRESSO. Simple, light, elegant and compact, it works without electricity. It has all the basic qualities to make a premium quality coffee anywhere.

Handpresso Wild prepares a tasty espresso of outstanding quality (according to the manufacturer) obtained by a high-pressure extraction, a patented Handpresso system. The coffee is listed as “a fine and smooth crema, subtle aromas, a structured body, a lengthy finish: a ‘vintage’ coffee!” How do you brew such tasty cup of espresso? Just pump the machine to 16 bar (of pressure, I’m assuming), add hot water from a kettle or a thermo insulated bottle and an Easy Serving Espresso (E.S.E.) pod. Then, serve the espresso in the cup of your choice by pushing the button. Read the rest of this entry »
