CubeStormer solves Rubik’s Cubes in ten seconds

by Mark R

I thought I’d give you readers at Coolest Gadgets a Friday treat with the CubeStormer.

The CubeStormer was designed by British engineer Mike Dobson, and it is made up of parts from several Lego Mindstorms sets connected to a computer. It is designed to solve a Rubik’s cube faster than any one of those cubists back in the early eighties.

You can watch the video after the jump, but you can see someone put a 3x3x3 inch Rubik’s cube in it, and it solves it in about twelve seconds. Two of these seconds are just to check its own work, apparently.

DIY Wi-Fi Detecting Bumper Sticker

by Ally

You probably remember the Wi-Fi detecting t-shirt that allows for you to light up every single time the shirt detects a signal.  Well now someone has taken that same shirt and found a way to turn it into a bumper sticker.  That way you have all of those wi-fi detecting abilities while you’re on the road.  Of course it’ll require you to do a little work all on your own, but then your car will be branded with the area’s Wi-Fi capabilities.

Headless USB Barbie

by Edwin

Barbie must’ve been an unrecorded wife of Henry VIII – as she has to undergo a decapicitation each time you want to access data within her. Hmmm, who says blondes are dumb, considering the amount of memory she holds within? Definitely one of the creepier DIY USB flash drive projects, and it might traumatize some of the smaller girls around who love their Barbies to death, but it sure is one of the more interesting DIY weekend project to indulge yourself in. What are some of the other zanier USB flash drive mods that you have come across so far? Get your instructions from where else but Instructables.

Gameboy gets a steampunk makeover

by Ally

steampunk_gameboy

If you were ever considering attempting to steampunk something, this would be a great one to start on.  As far as steampunking goes this one is actually affordable and a bit more simple than it initially appears.  Some mods go above and beyond anything the average person could ever pull off, but this one might not be so bad to attempt on an old Gameboy that’s still alive and kicking.

DIY Bike Light

by Edwin

Aidy is the brain behind the DIY Bike Light – working concepts with the potential to be individual pieces of artwork that is guaranteed to capture the attention of anyone who lays their eyes on them. I wouldn’t recommend you placing this beside the TV or coffee table if you happen to hold regular gaming sessions of Wii in your living room, nor will I recommend households with boisterous dogs to have these since the chances of knocking it over would be much higher than Iran developing nuclear weapons (if they haven’t yet done so already). Aidy is currently working on a second one at the moment, with a double burner which comes in the form of a bulb-burner and a separate candle. What do you think of this piece of DIY home decor? Just in case you were wondering, everything used here was recycled from parts of an old bicycle. Hmm, guess China would be a good place to start such a business…

Snow Chopper made from spare parts

by Mark R

snowmobile_chopper_610x405I love seeing DIY gadgets like these. Every time I see one, such as the Star Trek phaser, I can’t help but think: “how does one get the time to build these things?”

I mean, I can barely keep up with my writing deadlines. Therefore, I will give my full congratulations to Bob Sawicki and Toby Weisser for using their weeknights and Sundays to build the snow chopper that you see in the photo.

Sawicki and Weisser are stationed in Antarctica, at the McMurdo Station research center. Sawicki and Weisser were responsible for maintaining snowmobiles at the station, and they decided to use the spare parts for the chopper.

Design a Star Trek Phaser, for real

by Mark R

phaser 12X beamWe reported on a Star Trek Phaser before, but that was a toy. What you see here is the real deal. Well, as real as it can probably be with DIY tech.

This modded weapon is powered by a FlexDrive DC/DC, and it uses an off the shelf laser driver. In fact, I believe that it is an ordinary laser from a Blu-ray device.

There is a video of this phaser after the jump so you can see it in action, and you will note how it can pop balloons from a distance. By the way, it can also burn skin. You may note that you cannot see the entire beam, as in the photo. I believe the photo uses a smoke effect, which is really the only way to see most lasers.

Arduino Weather Clock keeps you informed on weather

by Ally

Basically all of the weather machines out there have zero personality.  They have their fancy screens to give you all of your weather alerts and your important weather information.  However, most of them lack personality.  Well this homemade job is packed full of personality.  It may not warn you about severe weather, but it will let you know what to expect before you step outdoors.
