Joby launches trio of new portable tripods

by Edwin

Joby made a name for itself with the release of the GorillaPod which by the way, does not resemble a gorilla in any way apart from the fact that it can “hang” from just about any place as long as the pole or branch is able to support its weight alongside the camera it is attached to. Well, certainly they cannot rely on just a single device along to roll in the dough, right? Enter three more portable tripods to ensure they remain the best at what they do.

All three new releases are the GorillaPod Micro 250, GorillaPod Micro 800 and GorillaPod Hybrid, where they were specially developed and designed to meet the needs of today’s digital camera consumer, regardless of whether you are an enthusiast who shoots on-the-go with a point-and-shoot camera, or have moved up a notch to the prosumer category with the most recent compact system camera in tow.

Pico Dolly good for small spinning shots

by Mark R

Remember early last decade when every movie was doing shots that imitated the bullet time effect of The Matrix? It seemed like every time I watched a movie there would be this pointless stillshot followed by a circular pan around it.

Yes, it was done to death, but this Pico Dolly could reproduce that fad, but for YouTube users. The Pico Dolly is made from aluminum, weighs about three pounds, and designed to hold a camera with three screw mounts with the option of a 11-inch friction arm. As you can see, it has wheels for those moving shots, and the user can mount their DSLR or even their iPhone on it.

You can see in the video after the jump how its rollerblade wheels can create some pretty cool action shots. With the wheels on an angle, it can do those aforementioned bullet-time shots, on a smaller scale. Looks like your Neo and Trinity action figures are going to get some airtime and playtime.

Samsung NX200 camera does a bang-up job

by Edwin

When it comes to digital cameras, Samsung is a relatively new player to the game if you compare their history with the other more established players such as Pentax, Olympus, Nikon and Canon – but that doesn’t mean Samsung is no good at it; no sir, Samsung has picked up the pace in the game rather fast, and with their latest NX200 compact system camera, it is capable of delivering professional standard photography in a relatively small package.

Yes sir, the Samsung NX200 is said to guarantee an easy experience which allows you to unleash your creativity to the maximum thanks to a bunch of high-performance features that have been included in the compact premium metallic design, where it no longer leaves you with the dilemma of picking between style and quality images.

Samsung MV800 Flipscreen Camera

by Mark R

One of the problems with reporting on cameras is that they are all very much alike. Once I report on the Megapixels and memory, I then list off a bunch of the usual features.

Samsung’s MV800 Point and Shoot (P&S) camera has one incredibly interesting feature that I have never seen before. It has a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen display that can be flipped 180 degrees. This comes in handy for self-shots and low-angles shots, and for when you want to prop it up.

I suppose that you can also flip the screen over and view the contents of the microSD/SDHC card. That’s right, it takes the microSD instead of the usual SD. That’s another unique feature that will probably become more common, if it isn’t already on P & S cameras.

Thanks to CineSkates, Gorillapod looks even stranger with wheels

by Mark R

We have reported on the Joby Gorillapod before, on many occasions. It is a flexible tripod that attaches to a camera, making it look like a War of the Worlds Martian. If you ever wanted to put some wheels on your Gorillapod, you can do it now with Cineskates.

If you are wondering why you should want to put your flexible tripod on wheels, then you need to think like a film director. Just think of how cool your DSLR video will be when you do arcing shots, sliding shots, rolling shots, and any other shot that is in dynamic motion.

Panasonic Lumix FX90 gets Wi-Fi connectivity

by Edwin

Staying connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi is more or less a given these days, and with many more devices hitting the market that come with built-in Wi-Fi, it goes without saying that to see a compact digital camera carry such functionality is not such a huge surprise any more these days. Of course, there is always another method to retrofit Wi-Fi connectivity into your camera, and that is by using an Eye-Fi SD memory card – but you need not do so with Panasonic’s latest Lumix FX90, of course.

We are talking about 802.11 b/g/n connectivity being thrown into the latest FX90 model, where it will carry a 24mm ultra-wide LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMARIT lens with F2.5 brightness. Why Wi-Fi support? Well, everyone’s so social these days, and want to be up-to-date with the latest happenings, so to upload instantly shot photos on the spot to your social network page makes perfect sense, and I’m sure reporters who want to be discreet with their subjects would do better with a smaller camera such as this.

Panasonic Lumix GF3X announced

by Edwin

Panasonic’s range of Lumix digital cameras have been successful ever since they were launched, and the latest model in the family that is ready and raring to go would be the Panasonic Lumix GF3X, which currently is touted to be the company’s smallest compact system camera to date that will feature a completely new retractable power zoom Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42mm lens.

Just what makes this lens so special? For starters, it will boast of a retractable design that delivers a whole new level of mobility alongside stunning photo quality, making sure you can tote your beloved GF3X around with you to take great looking photos without the bulk of a DSLR. Of course, don’t expect the range of controls and quality to measure up to a DSLR, but if you’re one who can compromise, then the GF3X seems to be a pretty good bet.

Canon has new shooters

by Edwin

Canon’s a common enough name where digital cameras are concerned, and the company has certainly rolled out fantastic DSLRs all the way to compact point-and-shoot models which have proved to be winners in their respective departments. Today, we will not take a look at Canon’s DSLR range, but rather, will be checking out a trio of new PowerShot digital cameras that are not only capable of beautiful stills, but shooting high-definition video to boot.

The three models would be the PowerShot SX150 IS, the PowerShot ELPH 510 HS (which incidentally Canon claims is the world’s thinnest digital camera with 12x optical zoom and a 28mm wide-angle lens) and the PowerShot ELPH 310 HS. All three have been specially constructed to be able to handle a vast array of shooting situations with ease and accuracy, where individual cameras will come equipped with features ranging from impressive zoom to a new Intelligent Image Stabilization (IS) system, Smart AUTO with 32 shooting scenes, High-Speed Burst mode and HD video capture.
