Welcome to the age of Dropcam video monitoring

by Mark R

As I have said before, I like to see trends in technology. For some reason, it would appear that many consumer electronics are into small cameras. Actually, I know the reason, having cameras in your house that are linked wirelessly can allow you to watch things like family members or pets.

The Dropcam is one of these cameras, and it looks very similar to the Samsung Wi-Fi Video baby monitor that we reported on last week at CES. Dropcam HD is “the world’s smallest Wi-Fi video monitoring camera”, but I don’t know how long the company can make a boast like this.

Dropcams have an easy setup with an estimated time of 60 seconds. They are always on, which means that you are always watching. All the video footage is encrypted and stored on a cloud DVR. The Dropcam has a night vision capability for seeing in the dark, and it even has a two-way communication feature.

Liquid Image introduces the EGO HD

by Mark R

We have reported on Liquid Image products before. They are most most effective at making digital cameras that are mounted onto specially made goggles.

Clearly, the crowd for these devices are the extreme sports people, the ones who ski, dive, ride, or some other type of daring activity that I don’t do. This crowd would be familiar with GoPro and Contour cameras that attach to helmets, and it would appear that Liquid Image wants to get in on this tiny camera action with their new line of EGO HD.

The EGO HD is a “mini extreme sport camera for surfboards, autos, bikes, motorcycles, kayaks, or anything that you want to mount your Ego to”. It streams video via smartphones, tablets, or computers, and no extra wireless module attachment is required for wireless Live streaming.

8MM is back without the film or the app!

by Mark R

Some of you might remember 8mm film, or at least remember the film 8mm with Nicholas Cage. Thanks to the Fuuvi, makers of the USB Mini Digital Camera, 8mm is back.

In case you are wondering, the Fuuvi Bee apparatus that you see in the picture has no 8mm film in it, and it doesn’t house an iPhone or other type of smartphone. All the film is done digitally, and it has a pretty wimpy resolution of 640 x 480.

You can see what a video looks like after the jump. It also does stills at 1280 x 960, and it is noticeably smaller than an 8mm camera. There is also no sound of 8mm motors working.

Samsung DV300F DualView digital camera

by Edwin

Samsung has certainly carved quite a comfortable, secure niche for itself in the world of consumer electronics, delivering quality products at prices that you would not shy away from even in times of economic crisis. Their reach is certainly far and wide, and one of the company’s more innovative releases recently would be the Samsung DV300F, where it is part of the DualView family that further innovates this hugely popular category.

Touted to carry the latest in Dual LCD technology, while sporting Wi-Fi connectivity, it will allow you to shoot and share your favorite memories in a jiffy. The Samsung DV300F will continue from where its predecessors left off, using a 1.5” front facing LCD screen which makes sure you know what you are shooting even in an extremely challenging situation. Olloclip iPhone Camera Lens

by Edwin

Everyone and their dog knows by now that the iPhone 4S’ built-in camera is one of the best in the business where smartphone cameras are concerned, and the iPhone 4 follows closely behind. Well, if that is the case, you might want to maximize the potential of your iPhone’s camera with this nifty little accessory, the $69.99 Olloclip iPhone Camera Lens. This is no ordinary fisheye lens, where it plays nice with the iPhone 4S and its predecessor, but is also a quick-connect lens system that will comprise of other lenses such as wide-angle and macro lenses, all crammed in a small and convenient package.

The Olloclip is a snap to use – all you need to do is slide it over your iPhone’s rear camera lens, and you’re good to go. The fisheye lens is good enough in capturing a nearly 180 degree field of view, while the wide angle lens is said to double the field of view there and then. Want to get up close and personal with a particular object? Not a problem, as the macro lens lets you focus the iPhone within 12mm-15mm of your subject.

Leica introduces V-Lux 3 digital camera

by Edwin

If you want to take the road less traveled where digital cameras are concerned, then you might not want to consider old names like Nikon, Canon and Panasonic, but rather, how about Leica? Leica is truly a class apart from the others, as it isn’t exactly the most popular brand that you see people carry around. What you see above is not a DSLR, but rather, a regular compact digital camera known as the Leica V-Lux 3 that will come with an extremely flexible lens.

How flexible, you ask? Well, the Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 4.5 – 108 mm f/2.8 – 5.2 ASPH. 24-fold super-telephoto zoom lens is more than capable of handling a wide range of focal lengths that are equivalent to 25–600 mm in 35 mm format. Not only that, the newly developed 12.1-megapixel CMOS image sensor is also said to guarantee exceptional image quality for all applications. Touted by Leica to be a truly universal solution for creative photographers who want an all-in-one camera, the V-Lux 3 will also boast of a wide range of video options, letting you record all your favorite moments in video quality that is equal to those found on premium-range camcorders.

The Drift HD Action Camera

by Mark R

For some reason, I seem to be reviewing gadgets that would be great gifts for those who love the outdoors. I’m sure there is a better name to describe that audience, but I think you will see that they would enjoy the Drift HD Action Camera.

The Drift HD is designed to be on the same level as the Go Pro cameras for those point-of-view shots that you see on video-sharing sites. In this case, the Drift HD is designed to travel on the side of the head of a biker, skier, or other extreme sportsman (or woman) for action shots. It comes with a lot of straps and mounts to make this easy to happen, too.

Take smarter videos with your smart phone with Mobislyder

by Mark R

One of the problems with shooting video with your phone is that a phone was never really designed with that purpose in mind. Moving shots in movies and television are often done with tracks and pivots, in order to avoid that shaky feeling that comes from unsteady hands.

Now smartphones have the Mobislyder, which is a portable dolly designed for small video enabled devices. It requires a lot less set up than professional video equipment.

There is a video of the Mobislyder in action after the jump. As you can see, it can be placed on any surface with its glider track and a swivel for many angles.
