When the going gets rough, it is rather obvious that the tough get going – and Olympus subscribes to that school of thought with their latest addition, the Olympus Tough TG-820 compact digital camera. I clearly remember back in the days when owning a digital camera was considered to be a luxury item for the average man on the street, and Olympus was the only one in town to deliver a rugged digital camera – waterproof, even. While other imaging companies have caught up in this department, Olympus continues to forge new ground with their latest offering, the Tough TG-820.

It is their toughest shooter just yet, being waterproof up to 10 meters, is shockproof and also freezeproof. This 12-megapixel shooter comes with a backlit CMOS sensor and the powerful image processor that can be found in the Olympus PEN range, you know for sure that your images will turn out great right from the get go, never mind if you do not know anything else about digital photography.

Just how tough is it? It can withstand shocks against falls from as high as 2 meters, and will be able to dance around in the snow, although just make sure that the mercury does not drop below the -10°C mark. Apart from that, it is said to be crushproof with loads of up to 100kg. After all, since we know that you are going to embark on adventures with the Tough TG-820, Olympus has thoughtfully included Dual IS (Image Stabilization) that reduces picture blur due to camera shake and subject motion. Perfect when you are trying to grab a shot while tumbling down the hill.

Preserve those moments forever with Full HD recording capability, as movies are encoded in the MOV/H.264 format for smooth and efficient playback later on a HDTV. You are able to record movies using the dedicated movie REC button, and a multi-motion function for stabilizing the image will kick in whenever you shoot while you walk. To be even more artsy with your images, a dozen Magic Filters were thrown into the mix – they are Pop, Pin Hole, Fisheye, Drawing, Soft Focus, Punk, Watercolor, Sparkle, Miniature, Reflection and the two new kids on the block, Dramatic and Fragmented.

Definitely the shooter to consider if you love living out a rough-and-tumble lifestyle.

So your compact digital camera manages to pack in a whopping 16-megapixels for each image? Well, here is news for you – the mighty DSLR will always bully the standard point-and-shoot devices into submission, and the same applies to Nikon’s latest shooter – the Nikon D800. Professionals will definitely fall head over heels in love with this, you know for sure that wedding photographers will be lining up for this puppy as soon as it is unleashed from Nikon’s stables.

The D800 is a new FX-format model that delivers a mind-boggling 36.3-megapixels, and at its core is superior image quality that is equal to that achieved with medium-format digital cameras. Not only that, the D800 will also boast a number of new functions for a high level of added value, and Nikon manages to cram all of that goodness into a compact and lightweight body.

Apart from the new Nikon FX-format CMOS image sensor and new EXPEED 3 image-processing engine, the D800 will also come with a new 91K-pixel RGB sensor which supports the Advanced Scene Recognition System alongside noteworthy advances in scene recognition performance. Not only that, you will find a slew of additional functions such as Multi-area mode Full HD D-Movie that enables movie recording, where you can either rely on the FX-based movie format or the DX-based movie format.

Folks who want to get even more from the D800 will be pleased to hear that Nikon has plans as well to roll out the D800E, another model which delivers increased resolution for images with more dimension. Other aesthetic improvements include a viewfinder frame coverage of approximately 100% and a lightweight and durable water- and dust-resistant body. With the use of magnesium alloy for the body, it enables the camera to be as durable as the D700, while tipping the scales at 10% less.

Anyone out there want to pick this up as your next shooter, hobbyist or otherwise?

No matter how many high end cameras are released to the market, the bread and butter for most imaging companies, I would boldly presume, would be compact point-and-shoot digital cameras. After all, not everyone is able to splash out hundreds of dollars near the $1,000 mark and beyond, for a DSLR, unless you are really serious about developing your photography skill. Canon’s family of PowerShot compact digital cameras have just been updated, where the Elph 530 HS and Elph 320 HS both come with integrated Wi-Fi connectivity so that you are able to hook up to your home network, hotspot, or via an app on your iOS or Android device.

Having said that, this capability would enable you to wirelessly transmit photos and videos from the cameras directly to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and the Canon Image Gateway online service without requiring a pesky cable – that is one less thing to bring around for sure on your travels. The iOS app should be released sometime in April, while the Android version is set to follow a month after that.

The Elph 530 HS will be a 10-megapixel camera with a CMOS sensor, a 12x optical zoom lens, and a 3.2″ LCD touch screen display, coming in black and white finishes. Out later this April for $349.99 a pop, it is accompanied by its sibling, the Elph 320 HS. This will be a 16-megapixel CMOS shooter that has a 5x (24-120mm) zoom lens and a 3.2″ touch screen LCD display, coming in black, silver, red, and blue shades. You can pick this puppy up in March for $279.99.

As for the other new cameras released, those will not have wireless connectivity, but apart from that, they are no slouches in the performance department either. For example, the PowerShot SX260 HS is a 20x (25-500mm) superzoom with a 12-megapixel CMOS image sensor, 1080p video recording, and a built-in GPS, letting you shoot a burst of 10 shots at 10.3 frames per second – perfect to immortalize those fast moving action moments. Out later next month at $349.99, it will be available in black, green, and red shades.

For those who want something rugged, the PowerShot D20 is a 12-megapixel CMOS camera that is waterproof up to 33 feet, is shock-proof to five feet, and freeze-proof to 14°F. Arriving in May for $349.99, adventurers out there should take note!

Which camera out there piques your interest?

Rewind the clock by 10 years, and back by a decade, did you envision a future (today) where phones sported touchscreen displays, and are of resolutions which put your old school monitors to shame? And this newfangled genre of consumer electronics devices known as tablets, those too, are dotting the landscape with a flurry of popularity that was previously unknown. The resolution count on monitors, TVs, and phones have increased steadily, and there does not seem to be any signs of stopping anytime soon. MicroOLED has a spanking new bright and detailed low power OLED panel which will cater for the digital camera market, where it is heralded to be the end all and be all of digital camera displays – signaling the death knell of the optical viewfinder in such devices.

Electronic viewfinders (EVF) at this moment enable photographers (professionals or otherwise) to access a wide range of important information such as exposure or white balance whenever one frames a shot, and to check out how different settings would affect a particular image on the fly, the optical viewfinder is still a mainstay regardless of how expensive a particular camera is. Some of the reasons put forward include a lack of dynamic range, noticeable lag as the digital image is processed, as well as battery life concerns.

MicroOLED tops the game at the moment in terms of resolution count with their latest entry which is said to deliver the highest pixel density OLED microdisplay that is available on the market today. This is a new 0.61″ (diagonal) OLED panel which packs in a whopping 5.4 million pixel density, in addition to a sub-pixel pitch of 4.7 by 4.7 micrometers. It will come in both 16 million color SXGA (1280 x 1024 pixels) and monochrome (2560 by 2048 pixels) formats, and is also touted to have done away with any spacing between pixels and benefit from 96% uniformity.

Each high resolution image that is reproduced on the display will boast of a 100,000:1 contrast ratio, allowing your eyes to detect subtle tones in a scene which are missing in other EVFs and, even more importantly, the battery life issue is also addressed, where MicroOLED’s display can run on as little as 0.2W of juice.

Nikon is back with yet another digital camera for the mass market, pushing out its Coolpix L810 shooter this time around. Just what does the L810 have in terms of improved performance over its predecessors? For starters, it will come with a CCD image sensor that has an effective pixel count of 16.1-million pixels, in addition to a 26x optical zoom NIKKOR lens which is capable of covering angles of view from the wide-angle 22.5 to super telephoto 585 mm (equivalent in 35-mm format), and a new lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function.

Despite all of those capabilities, the Coolpix L810 will still deliver the same form factor that will be able to support a firm, steady grip and side zoom control which has become the signature physical format for its predecessors, delivering high performance without a second thought.

Never mind the relatively compact size, the L810 will still be able to boast of a CCD image sensor that has an effective pixel count of 16.1-million pixels for superior image quality and a 26x optical zoom NIKKOR lens which will cover a wide range of angles of view from 22.5 to 585 mm (both equivalent in 35-mm format). This alone will make shooting the entire lot of everyday scenes a snap, from wide-angle landscapes to close-ups of people using zoom. The firm and comfortable grip that we mentioned about earlier will also be able to support operation using both hands so that you have a steadier grip on the camera, helping reduce camera shake in the process.

Not only that, the Coolpix L810 boasts of being the first high-power zoom model in the Coolpix L series which will come with a lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function, delivering high-precision optical camera shake compensation which can also be used with movie recording. Other hardware specifications include a 3″ TFT LCD display, and the ability to run off AA batteries, making this a true blue worldwide digital camera without having to worry about power outlet types and what not when you travel. You can choose from black, red, bronze, or blue shades.

Thin is still in where digital cameras are concerned, and while we took a look at a couple of shooters from Panasonic yesterday, Sony too, did not want to lose out on the game, and the Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer has just added yet another model to the ultra-thin Cyber-shot T series – with the model number DSC-TX200V. You might want to look into expanding that external storage space collection of yours if you happen to pick up the new TX200V camera though, considering it is capable of shooting 18.2-megapixel images thanks to its “Exmor R” CMOS sensor.

This would clearly place the Sony DSC-TX200V as the highest-resolution digital camera that is currently on offer in the “point and shoot” market segment, and when coupled with the spanking new BIONZ processor, both of them will work in tandem to create images as well as video files with extremely low noise.

Just what else do you expect the Sony DSC-TX200V to carry? This advanced model is also tipped to deliver lightning-fast AutoFocus speeds of approximately 0.13 seconds in daytime and 0.25 seconds in low-light situations. Bear in mind that the speeds quoted are just on paper, when in real life, they might vary depending on shooting conditions. With such shooting speeds, they will more or less ensure you are able to capture the right moment at all times.

Not only that, the TX200V Cyber-shot will also look good externally, as it comes with a new and beautiful, reinforced glass design which encases a large, 3.3″ Xtra Fine TruBlack OLED wide touch-screen display. Want to bring this with you on your next watersports adventure? Not to worry – considering this is water-proof (up to 5m or approx.16 feet), and I am quite sure that also, to a certain amount of time.

In addition, the Sony DSC-TX200V is also dust-proof and freeze-proof (up to 14F), and will boast a “Photo Creativity” interface which allows you to easily adjust creative settings in order to roll out unique, custom-styled photos. If you happen to have case of shaky hands, fret not – image stabilization will kick in during video and still shooting, thanks to borrowed technology from the Sony Handycam range, where its “Optical Steady Shot Active Mode” drastically reduces blurring caused by camera shake while on the move.

Expect to pick up the DSC-TX200V camera in silver, red, and violet shades for around $500 when it hits the market later this month.
