Water Powered Calculator

February 13th, 2008 by Mark R in Coolest Mobile News, Eco Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets

Water Powered Calculator

I don’t know if anyone carries a pocket calculator anymore (most cell phones should have one, really), but they were all the rage back in the eighties when they figured out how to make them smaller and cheaper. Most of them became solar at that point, but there was nothing like the Water Powered Calculator.

As its name suggests, the Water Powered Calculator uses water or any other type of electrolytic liquid for power. I am assuming that Gatorade would probably work just as well. Anyway, the liquid creates a chemical reaction in the fuel cell with a zinc anode and cathode. This somehow makes an electrical current that is good for a month’s worth of power.

So the next time you are taking a math test, and your calculator runs out, you don’t have to replace the battery. All you need to do is make a trip to the water fountain.

HTC Advantage X7510

About one year ago, HTC revealed the Advantage, a Windows Mobile-based device that was due to replace the Athena. The Advantage version had some interesting features including a 5-inch VGA display, Intel PXA720 624 MHz processor, 3 megapixel camera, 8GB hard drive, Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS.

HTC has recently unveiled the newest version of the Advantage, the X7510. They have made some serious upgrades which includes doubling the internal memory (16GB in comparison to the former 8GB). They have also added on TouchFLO, Opera Mobile 9, as well as Google Maps. There is also a rumor that it will contain Windows Mobile 6.1.

Sony Ericsson C902 = Hot.

February 11th, 2008 by Carolyn in Coolest Mobile News, Photography, Mobile Phones

When I was cell phone shopping last year, I really wanted a Sony Ericsson K800i. Badly. The only reason I did not get one is that I couldn’t buy one (aside from buying an unlocked one - which is quite expensive and wouldn’t have a guarantee that it would work with my provider) because they only sold it in the UK. I ended up with a Motorola RIZR Z3 instead.

I’m quite happy with my current phone, but Sony Ericsson has announced a metric ton of new phones and upgraded models this past week. I’m mainly going to review the one phone that is making me drool: The Sony Ericsson C902. From Gizmodo:

* Slim Cyber-shot phone with unique slide-out lens cover. Camera-ready in an instant
* Stand out design - instantly recognizable
* 5.0 megapixel camera with Face Detection and Auto Focus. Always capture the best shot possible
* Illuminated camera touch keys. Intuitive guidance around the camera settings

Aerotel GeoSkeeper and SKeeper

February 7th, 2008 by Mark R in Coolest Mobile News, GPS gadgets

Aerotel GeoSkeeper and SKeeper

I have to admit, I had never heard of Aerotel before today, but it certainly sounds like a company that would make “mobile and home-based telemedicine and telecare solutions”. Well, that is just what they do, and they have recently introduced two new wireless tracking systems.

The first is the SKeeper, a wearable personal safety phone. This device allows a user to be in close contact with anyone in case they need help. It allows for two-way voice calls, text messaging, and even advanced alerts in case of emergency.

The second is the GeoSkeeper, which you see pictured here. The GeoSkeeper is a step up from the SKeeper as it comes with an embedded quad-band GSM/GPRS module, built-in speakerphone, and GPS receiver. In other words, if the user gets lost, the geofencing features built-in allow others to find them. In fact, it can even be programmed to send out a text message to someone else if the user wanders outside a specified area.

In other words, the Aerotel GeoSkeeper and SKeeper are the “help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” for the next millennium. Yeah, I’m sure you were thinking the same thing, and so I just had to put it in writing.

Virtual tickets bring in the Age of the Digital Wallet

January 31st, 2008 by Mark R in Coolest Mobile News, Conceptual Gadgets

Virtual Ticket

I think we all know that everything that we do now, from communication to commerce, will all be done from our personal cell phone. In other words, that cell phone that we do everything on will do even more as it becomes our digital wallet.

In fact, this technology is already in place in Japan. In some places, all you have to do is touch a certain electronic sensor with a cell, and your payment is processed. I’ve heard that these devices have been in place since 2000.

San Francisco is trying to make strides in this technology with an experimental ticket-taker on the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Passengers of the Bay City’s famed rail train can now walk through and scan their cell phone instead of buying a separate ticket. Not only can certain phones get you a ticket on the BART, but you can make purchases from Jack-in-the-Box. So far, they are only testing it out with 230 people with Samsung phones.

Pinkberry is the new Black

January 30th, 2008 by Carolyn in Coolest Mobile News, GPS gadgets, Mobile Phones, Electronic Gadgets

pinkberry.jpgAs a member of the female population, I enjoy a number of things that don’t pertain exclusively to being a girl. I love video games, gadgets (as if writing on this site couldn’t make that point obvious) and all things tech related. Hell, I even love power tools - I’d much rather get a new power tool than a new pair of shoes. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy girly things like massages, gossip or the color pink.

Where I take objection to the whole “girl = pink” equation is when consumer electronics and gadgets are slathered in a coat of pink to “appeal to the female demographic”, well, it makes me want to punch a marketing executive.

Next in the long line of “girlifiying” gadgets is the new Blackberry Pearl 8130 in a pretty, pretty pink color. So, I’ll be calling it the PinkBerry (yes, I’m aware of the frozen dessert treat of the same name, but just work with me here) for purposes of this review. Read the rest of this entry »
