See your Inbox on your T-Shirt

by Mark R

I suppose that all of us don’t like to be away from our e-mail for a prolonged period of time, myself included. However, if I just knew that I didn’t have a lot of e-mails to check, I might be able to enjoy my time away from my computer.

As you can probably tell from this photo, this is a DIY project. Chris and Madeline Ball posted their work on the MAKE website, and have succeeded in their quest of showing the world just how much email that the wearer is getting.

There is a video after the jump so you can see how it works. You can see that it uses an Arduino Lilypad controller, connected to an Android device, which wirelessly syncs with a computer to light up how many emails that you have.

SIMsystem keeps track of underwater status, wirelessly

by Mark R

Welcome to SIMsystem, which is being hailed as the world’s first electric underpants. I can scarcely believe that this is the first electric pair of undies. Hasn’t someone made a pair of electric underwear to keep your torso warm?

Anyway, the SIMsystem is designed for people who live in rest homes, and the workers who love them. Or, if nothing else, must work with them and change their Depends every once in a while. The SIMsystem uses this sensor strip in the underwear that will detect moistness, and then will send a report via text message, or even over an intercom.

AirPower from RCA could make us a truly wireless society

by Mark R

While I was at CTIA Wireless 2010, I saw a booth that had something to say about AirPower.

AirPower is some new technology developed by RCA, and it is designed to steal the energy from the Wi-Fi signals in the air.

I had no idea that those Wi-Fi signals could actually carry any energy, but apparently it only takes five to six hours to juice up one of these AirPower batteries if it is within close proximity of a Wi-Fi hotspot.

These AirPower chargers will be available sometime before the holidays, and they intend to market them as emergency back-up power supplies.

Personalize your mobile with the iaPeel skin

by Mark R

While I was at CTIA 2010 this year, I was bombarded by businesses who can somehow turn a profit by selling skins for mobile devices. Most of these businesses looked the same, but one of the most unusual ones that I saw was from a company known as iaPeel, “the only consumer printable skin system”.

All the user has to do is download some special software, and then he or she can put their own image on their skin. From there, it is as easy as printing off a deskjet printer.

These iaPeel skins are available for all kinds of mobile devices, and they are very easy to put on. They also have “a built-in precision alignment system that ensures a perfect fit every time”.

DriveNTalk KlaT 7 is another mobile device to improve driving

by Mark R

It appears that the iLane isn’t the only device that is made to help driving safe for mobile devices.

This is the DriveNTalk KlaT 7, which is Enustech’s new brand name, “living up to [the] true definition of its name (the DriveNTalk, not the KlaT, whatever that means). DriveNTalk has Voice command with its voice to text service, with no need to see or touch the unit for controlling it. Apparently, the device is solar powered.

The user can “enjoy the experience of a[n] optional service of sending SMS, e-mail, and/or SNS” through vocal control.

iLane: Not software, not Apple, but makes driving safer

by Mark R

Clearly, this whole texting-while-driving is a huge hot-button issue, as there was an entire area of the CTIA floor that was practically devoted to it.

Most of the devices were software that you could download on your mobile phone (usually an iPhone App form) so you could stop texting at certain speeds, or have your text messages read aloud to you. The iLane, which is not an Apple product, is “the world’s first and only in-car device that gives you complete control of your smartphone by using simple voice commands”.

This allows the driver to open, listen to, and respond to email by voice alone. The driver can also make and receive phone calls by saying a person’s name or phone number out loud, as well as answer phone calls with a simple vocal command. The driver can also have their calendar events read aloud as well.

Samsung S-Life starts with the Galaxy S

by Mark R

Samsung has a huge poster in front of CTIA Wireless 2010 promising an “S-Life”, and they told me that it is a reference to the Samsung Galaxy S.

I got a chance to see it for myself, and it really is a beautiful phone with 4-inch AMOLED display that was quite colorful. According to the company, the display is Samsung says the new display is “20% brighter than its previous AMOLED screens, saves 20% more battery life and is 80% more reflective”. It is powered by Android 2.1, a 1GHz processor, Layar reality browsing, and has 16GB of internal memory.

Powermat’s Newest Variations on display at CITA 2010

by Mark R

I really should have visited Powermat’s booth at CES last January, because I have missed out on the changes that they are doing. I’m glad I went to Vegas again for CTIA 2010.

They started with the Powermat 1X (top left) which is designed to be a single position charging mat for those who have just one Smartphone, or just want their wireless charger in a small space. It is available for $39.99 in April. Those who want a little more can just go to the the Powermat 2X (top right) is just for two devices, retailing for $59.99, also available in April.
