There are few things in this world as awesome as cake. Well if you’re serious about your cake loving habits, here’s a gadget to go with your cake. It makes sure that all of your slices are just right. Not only that, but you get a barely justifiable gadget to clutter up your already stocked full kitchen cabinets. Which is a nuisance, but you can’t have the cake feeling left out. After all, you have a kitchen gadget for every other task you could possibly think up.

The tray has little LED lights that guide you along to show you just where to cut. You just press the power button and choose just how many slices you need. You can pick anywhere from 2 on up to 12. It has a Lazy Susan that allows for the tray to spin around during slicing or while you’re putting icing on the cake. Then to top it off, instead of listening to your off key version of the Happy Birthday song, the tray can play the song for you. Ears everywhere will rejoice at the relief of not having to hear that one anymore. The tray will hold cakes that are up to 12 inches in diameter. You can purchase it for $39.66 from Amazon.

Camping season for most is coming to a close, but if you camp all year round, this is one item you’ll benefit from. Having a hot cup of coffee when it’s not so warm outside is always a good idea. Yes, it might make you appear as if you aren’t exactly roughing it, but it’s nice to have at least a couple of things to make camping a little more convenient. This Brunton Flip-N-Drip isn’t overly large either, it’s only the size of a thermos.

In order to make the coffee, you boil water in the base of the coffee maker. Then you just attach what is called the brew chamber, that is already filled with the coffee grounds of your choosing. Once it’s attached you flip the entire thing over and it will begin the percolation process. That portion of the process itself takes about 10-12 minutes. After that is all finished you remove the 16 oz mug that features a double wall and is insulated. The Flip-N-Drip isn’t available just yet, but once it is you’ll be able to pick it up for $45 from Brunton.

I have rituals when it comes to my tea that are so set in stone that it’s dangerous to go mixing them up. However, the things I do have to make the tea aren’t anything special. They’re just your average low cost items, they just happen to be ones I like. As much as I love my tea, I really don’t feel the need to spend a ridiculous amount on it. However, if you love having the top of the line items, this Bugatti Vera Kettle will help you make your tea in style.

The kettle has special electronic controls for all of the functions required to keep the tea kettle up and functioning. It can achieve temperatures between 45 and 100 degrees Celsius. The screen and all of the buttons are located on the handle itself. The screen displays a clock and includes a self-timer that sets and regulates the tea kettle. The kettle can be programmed to make sure that your tea is done when you need it to be, like on a coffee break or first thing in the morning. To get this Bugatti Kettle it’s only going to cost you a measly £185.00 or about $300 from Where Did You Buy That.

Just when you thought that a rudimentary device could not get “techno-fied”, along comes the Digital BBQ Tongs.

The Digital BBQ Tongs are more than just ordinary barbecue tongs with a LED display, but they have special sensors in the tips to detect the meat’s temperature. So in case you are wondering if the burgers or chicken really are cooked all the way through, just listen to the tongs.

Yes, these tongs will actually tell you, with an chimed alarm, when the meat is done. In fact, it has seven preset meat types and one custom setting. No more eating undercooked food and risking terrifying health problems ever again!

Not only does it come with a backlit LCD display, but it also has an LED flashlight for times when…actually, I can’t think of a time when you would use the LED flashlight. I mean, if you are barbecuing at night, then move your grill underneath the porch light! At least the LED flashlight might give you that extra light if it is needed.

If you like the concept behind the Digital BBQ Tongs, and want one of your own, feel free to go to the Taylor Gifts site and lay down $40. By the way, it comes with the 3 AAA batteries that power it.

For the person that is extremely committed to their grilling, I’m sure top of the line accessories are the absolute only option. However, if you’re fairly casual about your grilling, but would still like some grilling accessories to make your life easier, this affordable gadget could be a big help. It will allow for you to grill without being tied right next to it. There have been other remote BBQ thermometers, but this is by far the most affordable one I’ve come across.

There was a talking thermometer posted here on Coolest Gadgets, but it will cost you $70. Whereas this much more simple version of the gadget will only cost you $19.95. It’s a big price difference, especially when both gadgets still do the same thing. One just happens to have a lot more tricks and other fancy extras. This Remote BBQ Thermometer also includes a timer and will monitor your food up to 100 feet away.

Well, busy perhaps. Maybe if you don’t have the time to flip them yourself and there’s hundreds of hungry guests lining up for breakfast. The Chefstack Automatic Pancake Machine can make 4-inch size pancakes from no-mess batter pouches. And it only takes about 30 seconds as the flapjacks get cooked and stacked assembly style while you’re off doing something else.

The machine is about the size of microwave oven and has already been proven quite popular with coffee shops, cafeterias, convenience stores, and other small businesses in Australia and New Zealand.

But will it find a following at a Starbucks here in the States? Well, if competition from McDonalds continues to challenge their java marketshare, it just might. But come on, can a $3,500 machine really make yummy tancakes without being touched by human hands? I’m betting not. At least not in my kitchen.

The Smart Measure Cup gets really precise, measuring volume exactly and displaying the unit on the LCD screen attached to the handle. So you no longer have to place the measuring cup on top of the fridge or stoop down like a someone suffering from a case of the rickets to make sure you have an accurate measurement.

Designed by Ryan Eder & Chris Daniels, a pair of our friends at Yanko Design and manufactured by Taylor Kitchenware, the Smart Measure Cup does unit conversions, can be pre-set for recipe amounts which will “beep” once you reach them, and the built in cup can be removed for easy cleaning to keep the LCD safe from getting wet.

No word on how much the Smart Measure Cup will cost, but it should be available in the fall, making it an ideal holiday gift for the foodie in your life.

One of my wife’s favorite side dishes is “candied carrots” made Good Eats style. My son’s, of course, is french fries. And me? Well, I’m just happy with mashed taters. But it can be such a hassle to peel a half dozen carrots or so and then have to stop what you’re doing in order to clean up the peels. Sure, you can peel them in the garbage disposal, but often that can clog up the drain and not every kitchen has the disposal option. What does a cook do with all that vegetable detritus? Enter the Veggie Peel.

Simply but, the Veggie Peel is a peeler with a clear plastic chamber built into it to catch all the peels. When you’re done, it’s easy to take apart the Veggie Peel and empty it into the trash. No muss, no fuss. And with the double-sided, curved rubber grip, it’s easy for both lefties and righties to peel the veggies with ease. It almost looks like it could be “As seen on TV.” But even it if were, this is one of those – I have got to get me one of these – gadgets.

Available at Solutions, but unfortunately, for $20, it doesn’t come with a free set of Ginsu steak knives.

Go for extra bases with the Baseball Bat Pepper Grinder.

Baseball fans love to grill. Almost as much as football fans love to tailgate. But seasoning something on the grill with tiny pepper mills – or even average size mills – can be a bit singeing. Especially if you’re watching the game on the big screen while you’re doing it. Enter the Baseball Bat Pepper Mill.

Made to resemble a full scale real baseball bat, this natural wood pepper grider has been lathed down to the bat design with the handle being the grinder wheel and the meat of the bat being the actual grinder. Total length is two and a half feet with a standard, albeit oversized, stainless steel pepper grinding mechanism built inside.

With a bat grinder this big, cooks will really have to put some muscle into grinding their spices and seasonings. But there’s also a smaller, 19 inch version, for those who don’t want to work as hard.

Still, it’s a pretty savory gadget for cooking during the big game. Available at Amazon for $50.

I’m a culinary disciple of the Food Network, particularly of Alton Brown. And as such, I have an aversion for “uni-taskers,” so-called kitchen gadgets that are only for one thing and spend 99% of their time just taking up space in your kitchen. As AB puts it, the only uni-tasker in your kitchen should be a fire extinguisher, just in case. But I’m Italian, and this Meatball Grill basket may force me to say “Not so fast, AB!”

Made of stainless steel, this basket can cook up to twelve meatballs on your grill at a time and allow the fat to drain off for some flame broiled goodness. Just roll the meatballs, open it up, place them in and then close them. Then, it’s a flip half way through what is probably the same cooking time as a burger patty for some flame broiled Italian goodness that’s definitely “good eats.”

Cost is $50 from Williams Sonoma

It may look like a slide carousel for those old vacation slides, but this nifty little invention is a do it yourself low fat potato chip maker. simply slice your potato chips wafer thing and line them up in the slots. Stick ‘em in the microwave for a minute and you have what claims to be a nice low fat potato chip. No oil, no extra calories.

The chip maker comes complete with the 204mm slotted disk to place the potato chips, and two separate slicing tools for making wafer thin chips from a whole potato. It also doubles as a serving dish with dipping sectors in the middle. And the nice thing is that it’s certainly ideal to make alternative snacks as well including sweet potato chips, tortilla chips, carrot chips and whatever other vegetable you can slice and nuke into a tasty, healthy snack. That also means kids can use it without fear of being burned or burning down the house.

And because most offices have a microwave for cooking of processed TV style dinners, it could make for an ideal afternoon treat when workers need something to get them over that late afternoon slump. And studies show that a baked potato raises the endorphins in the brain and will help you to eat less at meal time.

For $14, it’s well worth seeing if it makes something that actually tastes good without being baked and easily shattered.

We already discussed an oven that cooks via USB, and we would be remiss in our duties at Coolest Gadgets if we did not report on other advancements in oven technology, such as this particular oven that cooks with lasers.

That’s right, lasers (just imagine the hands doing quotes like Dr. Evil). In fact, this oven uses a combination of three lasers to cook your food, which are specifically under your control. So if you want your pizza cooked at 350 degrees, you can make that distinction. I’m not really sure how that distinction is made, though. I mean, do you just use one laser for Jiffy Pop and three for a turkey?

I would imagine that complications will arise when cooking with lasers, which is why this oven has a “specially designed ventilation system”. I’m guessing that this system fans away the odd scents that occur with laser cooking. Then again, I really don’t know much about cooking with lasers. Man, that sounds like some futuristic cooking show. “Hello, everyone, and welcome to Cooking with Lasers. Today we’ll be blasting a pot roast”.

That is about all my sources tell me about this particular oven, which is still a concept for “Cooking in the Futur”, an Electrolux competition. Personally, I think it is a neat idea whose time has come, and I hope designer Ludovic Peperstraete wins some sort of award for this.

For those that have started grilling out already, you might want to pick up this handy gadget. Grilling out is fun, but sometimes it can be frustrating if you’re stuck standing near the grill all day. Then if you do happen to become distracted, you’ve just burned everyone’s dinner and there is no one around to blame except for you. It’s the short ones you have to worry about the most though, if they aren’t fed, they will come after you. With this remote thermometer, you’d always know when the meat is done, without having to hover over the grill all day long.

Just grab the handheld and hook it on your belt with the belt clip. Meanwhile the thermometer stays in the meat. Your handheld will display the temperature and even announce out loud when the meat is almost done and then done. Giving you time to run inside to grab something to place the meat on before it’s actually finished. Both are of course water resistant, so you won’t have to worry about screwing up the electronics while cooking. The handheld has a backlight for late night grilling. To keep them powered you’ll need two AA batteries and then two AAA batteries. It’ll cost you $69.95 from Brookstone.

Usually coffee is made in the old fashioned way of brewing it in the pot. However, if you have a stomach sensitive to the acids that are in coffee, you might find this different method quite useful. It’ll create your coffee in a way that is far less acidic and therefore a bit more gentle on your stomach. Of course it takes a little longer to create it initially, but it’s well worth the wait.

It functions a little more like a tea pot than a coffee pot. At least the process itself reminds me a little more of tea, except with a much longer steeping time. No electricity is actually needed, just add the ground coffee, fill the water chamber and then allow for it to steep for 12 hours. By doing this, it creates a concentrate that can then be mixed with water or milk and served either cold or hot. You can purchase the coffee maker for $79.95 from Solutions.

Just when you thought that you can’t update something technologically, here comes the Blue Ember iQue. This grill has “an integrated computer for precision control” for cooking your meat “on the barbie”.

The user has the option of setting the time and temperature for cooking. He or she even has the option of selecting the meat, and whether it will be well done, medium rare, or whatever setting that he or she prefers. The iQue also has an integrated temperature probe, and the computer will automatically lower the heat level based on its desired settings.

In case you are wondering how the user can control these features, it isn’t with a remote. No, it is all about a touch-control computer. I hope the touch-controls can work with barbeque sauce on your fingertips. However, for those who aren’t into tech while they are grilling, the iQue can work without any computerized help.

However, I believe at least one of the technological features on the iQue will really come in handy. You see, a sonar-based system will keep track of the propane usage and display the results of the remaining time.

The iQue comes with an infrared rotisserie burner, a built-in smoker box, and a side burner. It also comes with a bottle opener and ice bucket. All this is available for about $900.

According to recent studies, Pizza is a $30 billion dollar industry. That’s a heck of a lot of cardboard boxes in our landfills. But a Pizza box company has come up with a very simple pizza box design which recycles and reuses the box the pizza comes in with a simple tear along the serrated lines. Bet you didn’t think a simple square box could be redesigned, did you?

Dubbed the Green Box, the topbreaks down into 4 serving plates, while the bottom of the box folds into a convenient storage container to keep leftover pizza warm, or for storing into the refrigerator for later.

Cool video here –

This is a fantastic idea which shows what one an do just by asking the question, what can do I to this to make it better for Mother Earth? No real raise in price or quality control, just a few serrated lines and folds in the right spot and you have a multi-tasking box that not only cuts down on paper plates in our landfills, but becomes even more efficient in keeping the heat in for what’s leftover.

Just don’t forget to recycle it when you’re done.

Anyone who has ever taken leftovers to work for their lunch knows that it can be a pain at times. First of all you have to decide if you trust your coworkers enough to leave the food in the fridge. Then you have to deal with a line to the microwave at some places. I have worked at places before that don’t exactly leave me feeling encouraged to keep bringing food from home. Well with this lunchbox, it might make things a lot easier and give you more time to relax on your lunch break.

The design is an insulated lunchbox, so it should keep your food cool up until you’re ready to warm it up. Instead of taking the food to the microwave to heat it up though, you just plug in the box itself. It also will make it so you don’t have to keep a stash of plastic silverware at your desk, since it comes with some that stay in the lid. The inside compartments all pop out and can be put in the dishwasher to be cleaned. This design by Alex Cheong comes in several colors. It’d be a nice gadget to have around if it ever gets to be created.

Picnics and pot luck dinners share something in common – plastic utensils and paper plates. Not the kind of equipment if you’re seeking to make the dining experience a little more classy. Fundraising dinners, for example, which don’t have the budget of a political campaign can’t really make an elegant impression and still keep the costs low. Enter Snap and Dine

With a design that rather reminds me of a snap kit plastic model car, Snap and Dine uses a single plastic injection mold process to create a complete, yet recyclable, table setting to make such culinary endeavors a little more elegant and yet, provide for the convenience of a portable or temporary meal. It offers a complete 3-course setting with a very ornately designed plastic plate and recyclable plastic cutlery designed to look like elegant silverware.

Snap and Dine is not only an affordable way to make an impression on a date or fund-raising benefactor, but is both easy to use and dispose/recycle at the same time and reintroduces a disposable society into the notion that dining can be an elegant experience now matter where the table is set.

I don’t know why someone didn’t think of this sooner.

Of course, it is impossible to eat Chinese food without having leftovers, and so I took a paper bag full of leftovers so I could reheat them later. I figured that there would be a microwave in the hotel waiting room or in my room.

However, that didn’t appear to be the case, and so I had to throw away a perfectly good dinner or lunch because I simply didn’t have the means to heat it up. It’s like the old cartoon where the guy is stranded on a deserted island and finds a crate of canned food, but doesn’t have a can opener.

Now, if I had the USB powered lunchbox from Thanko, all I would need to do is plug it into my laptop, insert the food, and subject it to 140 degree temperatures. No food goes to waste, and I wouldn’t have to shell out more money at an over-priced Las Vegas restaurant.

This is also a lunchbox that allows an ordinary worker to heat their lunch without using the community microwave. That is a good thing, because no one cleans that usually outdated microwave anyway.

Something tells me this USB-powered lunchbox might be a bit harder to use than your average microwave, and might take some getting used to. I’m not certain if I would even try using microwave popcorn on it, because you know that awful smell it leaves when you overcook it. Still, you can’t beat the price at about $20.
