The Scamander RRV can go just about anywhere

Before he died, Peter Wheeler wanted the ultimate car – one that would not only go fast, but go anywhere. And by anywhere, he meant ANYWHERE. Over land, over water, over just about anything. The end of the day, he had the Scamander.

The Cube Concept Car

by Mark R

the-cubeThis isn’t the first time that we have reported on concept automobiles of the future. Most of them aren’t really what comes to mind when we think of a car, as they tend to be small one-manned drones.

The Cube is nothing different, but I admire Carlos Mendez’s vision for cars. Mendez noticed that most cars are way too large and heavy compared to their driver, so he set out to create a “vehicle designed more to a human scale”.

What makes the Cube unique is that the user determines what it will look like and alters it according to his or her needs. Think of the base as something like a Lego car, and it is up to the user to add the roll bars, windshield, roof, or a bed for hauling stuff.

Mendez’s Cube is also environmentally sound as it is completely electrical powered. I’m guessing that mass-production of the Cube would probably solve traffic problems as it looks like it takes up half as much width as an ordinary vehicle.

The Eye Dot Me Light – it’s watching you

by Ally

eye01jpg-500x333

Lights are usually meant to illuminate and not much else, however, this light seems to take things a couple steps further.  It hangs far above your head, spotlighting where you sit.  All the while if you peer above you’ll notice the alarming resemblance to an eye.  Giving you that feeling that someone or something is staring down at you from above.  Play an hour too many of Portal and you’re going to be cowering under your desk, wondering how GLaDOS made it into your house.  Then having the horrifying thought that you’ll never make it to the cake in the kitchen.

Canesta Motion-control Remote Control

by Mark R

canesta-3Sure, the motion control for the Wii is a huge success, and Microsoft’s Xbox is experimenting with Project Natal. I have even heard that PS3 has been wanting to get in on this motion control action.

But there is a lot of uses for motion control that do not involve gaming, and a company called Canesta (not to be confused with the popular card game canasta) is developing motion-control for those who want to channel surf.

There is a demonstration video of this after the jump, and it shows a man who is frustrated with playing with the arrows on his TV menu. He then chucks his remote control and gets his hands involved.

Squad Positioning System for Firefighters

by Mark R

squad-firefighter-positioning-systemI just saw an episode of Rescue Me last week where one of the firefighters was trapped, and the rest of the dysfunctional characters didn’t know where he was. Just watch the show on Hulu if you don’t know what I’m talking about.

Perhaps Dennis Leary and his comrades should use the Squad, a compact indoor position system that enables firefighters to know their location, as well as the location of their partners. This concept gadget, designed by a University of New South Wales student Roy Hareguina, uses a sonar sensor to provide a map of the surrounding area, instead of a GPS.

Hologram Phones? It’s Trou.

by Mark R

trou2Sure, we loved the iPhone with its complete touchscreen interface, so you can imagine the excitement when a holographic interface finally comes out. Yes, I am fully aware that a holographic interface sounds too good to be true, and the Trou Hologram phone isn’t, at least, not yet.

I’m sure we all love the basic concept photo behind this, with the 3-D hologram of the car sitting on the screen. Just imagine how cool it will be when you turn your mobile around and can see the car at nearly every angle.

Still, holographic projectors have been known to eat up lots of power, so that is definitely one obstacle for the small projectors on the surface of the display. I’m sure there are many other things that prevent our science-fiction visions of a holographic future from becoming reality.

Concept Oven Cooks with Lasers

by Mark R

cookinginthefuture-1_kb2yw_17621We already discussed an oven that cooks via USB, and we would be remiss in our duties at Coolest Gadgets if we did not report on other advancements in oven technology, such as this particular oven that cooks with lasers.

That’s right, lasers (just imagine the hands doing quotes like Dr. Evil). In fact, this oven uses a combination of three lasers to cook your food, which are specifically under your control. So if you want your pizza cooked at 350 degrees, you can make that distinction. I’m not really sure how that distinction is made, though. I mean, do you just use one laser for Jiffy Pop and three for a turkey?

Beanzawave microwave oven cooks by USB

by James

beanzawave2

How many times have you had to work straight through lunch, only to wonder if being lightheaded affected your job performance more than taking a half hour and eating something substantial. But sometimes you just can’t leave your desk. So does that mean being chained to cubicle and eating cold food the rest of your hectic career? Well how about a USB microwave which can heat small dishes right where are? It’ll have the ability to feed you hot food and drive workmates nuts with the wafting scents of cooked food coming from your cube. That’s where the strangely named Beanzawave comes in as the world’s smallest portable microwave oven.
