Seek Portable GPS Device Fits on the Wrist

August 27th, 2008 by Mark R in Conceptual Gadgets, GPS gadgets

A few days ago, we covered the Suunto X10, a GPS device that fits on your wrist. While there may not be a huge market for the GPS on the wrist, some concept designer apparently has a plan for a wrist GPS boom.

The designer, Jukka Roitto, has taken the wrist GPS one step further by putting a search engine and navigation guide on his concept model, which he has dubbed the Seek. The name may be simple, but what the Seek does is pretty complex.

The Seek is meant to help a person look for local attractions in an area, such as theaters, restaurants, or clubs. So, if you’re in a strange new town, and you’re looking for a place to eat or have fun, just Seek and you will find!

Tatung VOIP phone

August 26th, 2008 by Edwin in Conceptual Gadgets, Mobile Phones, PC Gadgets

How many of you use VOIP on a regular basis? I know there are many VOIP handsets available in the market, but how many of them are lookers like the Tatung VOIP?

The Tatung VOIP, winner of the 2008 IF, IDEA, and Red Dot awards is one classy phone with aims to making internet phones user friendly. Featuring Bluetooth, wireless and a touch pad design, the Tatung VOIP Phone is easy to connect to your VOIP service. Its casing can be customized but other than that the phone is devoid of unnecessary features with the exception of a faux antenna which is just for retro nostalgia.

Makes me wonder why such a classy design (that is not impractical to boot) cannot be turned into reality. Hello, are there any hardware manufacturers reading this?

Speed Vest has got your back

August 21st, 2008 by Mark R in Conceptual Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets

The Speed Vest is one those devices that looks good in concept, but I’m not certain if it will work in practice. It is a simple device that spells out your speed limit on your back, as if you’re wearing a team jersey with ever-changing numbers.

This Do it Yourself Project is designed by Brady Clark and Hykle Hansen. The vest is powered by an Arduino computer, an open-source embedded platform that is powered by an Amtel microcontroller.

As for the display itself, it uses electro luminescent wire that glows brightly with just a small amount of high voltage. One AA battery can power the Speed Vest for up to six hours, while a 9 volt can power the Amtel microcontroller for the same amount of time.

Box To Play concept music phone

August 21st, 2008 by AndrewD in Audio/Video Gadgets, Conceptual Gadgets, Mobile Phones

The iPhone was the step towards a pure super music phone that we all needed. It proved that media and mobility could be mashed together into one compact device. With that extra proof came the inspiration that designers were looking for to create their own musical masterpieces.

The Box To Play phone from Japan’s KDDI AU Design Project is everything we expect a conceptual phone to be. It introduces a new form factor for musical phones, as it transforms into a beautiful box shape, illuminated by a graphic equalizer on all four sides.

New video technique marries video and stills improving images

August 20th, 2008 by James in Audio/Video Gadgets, Conceptual Gadgets, Miscellaneous Gadgets, Tech News

Researchers at the University of Washington have developed a special effects technique that marries digital stills with video footage in order to overcome bad exposure and missing detail in the video image.

Called Space/Time Fusion, the technique works by taking video footage that’s blurry or overexposed and substituting the digital information with that of a properly exposed and focused still shots of the same subject. The technique can also remove unwanted subjects or objects like they were never there. And all done automatically thanks to an algorithm in the Space Time Fusion software which analyzes both video and digital imagery and then marries them together at similar points.

Music Composing gets digital …

August 20th, 2008 by James in Audio/Video Gadgets, Conceptual Gadgets

Of course it has, isn’t everything sooner or later? From our friends at Yanko comes this digital composer interface which has the promise to bring out the John Williams in all of us. The concept, which has LiteOn as it’s benefactor, the idea couldn’t be simpler. Sing into the pen/mic, dock it and watch the notes get transcribed before your eyes as they’re played back. Think of it as Danny Elfman meets karaoke.

M2E Recharges as You Walk

August 20th, 2008 by Mark R in Conceptual Gadgets, Eco Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets

Even as I write this report, I have my cellular phone plugged into the wall. Usually, I forget to charge it, and I have to milk one bar on the battery indicator all day. Like me, I’m sure you have been in predicaments where you desperately needed to charge your cellular phone, but don’t have time to hang around a power outlet for the next few hours.

Fortunately, there is a solution. What if you could just charge your phone with the simple action of walking? This is the basic principle of M2E Power.

I realize that the picture of this product (currently a concept) isn’t much to look at, but there is a lot going inside. It works with a miniature magnet passing through a coil, which captures the lowest emissions of kinetic energy. Kinetic actions like walking will then power up devices such as cellular phones, PDAs, or MP3 Players.

Microsoft Windows… Literally

August 19th, 2008 by AndrewD in Conceptual Gadgets, Wacky Gadgets

Take a look out the closest window to you right now. What do you see? Odds are that it looks nothing like your PC’s desktop, unless you took a picture of the scenery yourself and placed it as the desktop design manually. How would you like to make Microsoft Windows a more aptly literal translation of the word itself?

Designed by John Nouanesing, the Fenestra 3.1 Window replicates the background of your Windows Microsoft machine. Microsoft, where everyday is a sunny day! While Nouanesing might be a little behind in the times with this design, he promises an XP (still behind) version is on its way.

For now, these Fanestra Windows are still in the conceptual stage, but the designer promises that by the end of the year they will be available for purchase from his website. No word yet if there will be a similar blue screen version, which sadly enough, would make sense.
