January 7th, 2008 by James in Audio/Video Gadgets, CES 2008, Home Gadgets, Kitchen Gadgets

AudioVox Digital Message Center

Everyone has notes on their refrigerator. Grocery lists, reminders, even notes from the kids telling mom when they’ll be home for supper. But how many can say they have audio and video as well? If AudioVox’s Digital Picture Frame and Message Board catches on, we all will.

WildCharge wireless device charging

January 7th, 2008 by Marc in CES 2008, Miscellaneous Gadgets

WildCharge

Wireless power distribution has been talked about for a while now but WildCharge actually have a product to show.

The WildCharge product range includes a pad, which plugs into the wall and provides the power source, and a variety of adapters to enable wireless charging of your existing devices – including the iPhone. Drop the device on the pad and it starts charging automatically. The adapters take the form of gel cases that offer some protection as well as integrating the contact charging technology. There is a also a "universal" charger, which is basically a small self-adhesive unit that attaches to whatever you want charged.

The charging product shown is about the size of a mouse mat but there’s no technical restriction on the size of mat or the power delivered. They can handle up to 150 watts and more if necessary, which means laptop charging pads are also in the frame.

The idea of having a tabletop you can just dump things on to get recharged when you come into the house is fantastic but I can also see a use for people who travl regularly. I take a laptop, camera, phone and iPod around with me and If I could take one pad instead of 4 chargers it would make things that much easier.

iRobot Looj – The Gutter Cleaning Robot

January 7th, 2008 by Al in CES 2008, Robot Gadgets

Looj
We wrote about the iRobot Looj back in September, at the time I thought it was pretty cool but a bit too much on the niche side to be be a real hit. However here at CES I’ve seen one in action and must admit after watching it and speaking to the sales guy (taken with a big pinch of salt) it could actually be worth buying.

To use the Looj you simply place it at one end of your guttering and set it off sweeping, it will then traverse the length of your guttering sweeping the leafs onto the floor below. Check out the video of it in action: Read the rest of this entry »

Alienware Curved Display For Ultimate Gaming

January 7th, 2008 by Carolyn in CES 2008, Conceptual Gadgets, Gaming Gadgets, PC Gadgets

two-440.jpgAt this year’s CES, the folks over at Alienware have showcased the ultimate gaming nerd’s computer monitor.

The mammoth Alienware 2880 x 900 curved display gives the gamer a sense of having peripheral vision – which is great for those first person shooter games. This allows the gamer to immerse even more into the gameplay of a particularly intriguing first person shooter like Crysis or Bioshock.

CES 2008 Gates keynote

January 6th, 2008 by Marc in CES 2008

Bill Gates

Last year the queues for getting into see the Gates keynote were beyond a joke so this year we took a new strategy: Sit in the bloghaus (kindly provided by Seagate and Podtech) and watch the live webcast of the keynote from the comfort of a sofa in the Bellagio. So without further ado – here are the highlights.

The keynote opened with the announcement that this is Gates’ last time on stage at CES. There was some nice comic relief from a video showing what might happen when Bill retires this year and looks for new work, featuring people such as Bono and George Clooney.

There was a recap of mobile technology and microsoft’s involvement in that. There ave been 10 million windows smartphones sold to date, which is a fair number on one platform by anybody’s standards. Bill seem to think that mobile devices will play an increasingly important role in our lives, with high-def displays and more powerful devices enabling more things to be done on the move.

SE2 Brings you "The One"

January 6th, 2008 by Marc in CES 2008, Home Automation, Home Theater, iPod gadgets

ITC One Beauty front open SE2 labs think that high-end custom installs are getting too complicated. If you go it alone you’ve got a bewildering array of choices when it comes to amplifiers, video processors, projectors, sound sources etc and that’s before you’ve tried to make them all talk to each other.

So they’ve done the hard work for you. Take a large box that wouldn’t be out of place in a high-tech computer room. Fill it full of best-of-breed technology (Bryston amplifiers, high def TiVo etc). Make a customised interface to control it all and Voila, you get "The One".

The full list of toys is too long to repeat and includes mechanical as well as electronic devices. Think power conditioners, cable management, anti-vibration systems, your choice of game console, media center PC… the list is endless.

It looks great, it costs $24K and it has a space for you to plug in your iPod. What are you waiting for?
