WoW Wee are continuing to impress me with their cool toys and robots, one of this years offerings is Wrex the robotic dog and he does everything you’d expect from a pet dog, he looks cute, barks and even cocks his leg and has a virtual pee, cool!

Wrex has three different moods (happy, angry and crazy) and 3 desires (exercise, call of nature and hunger), he expresses this via his zany rotating eyes. He can roam around on his own, avoids obstacles, plays games and generally acts like a real dog, albeit on wheels. Check out the video of him in action
Lucky Dog is due to be released in quarter 3 this year and will be priced at $129.99, so to see it on a few Christmas wish lists (I can’t believe I’ve just mentioned Christmas in January).

It may not have a sexy name, but Pinnacle’s new pocket sized Video Transfer is a great gadget for the movie obsessed who want to encode videos on the fly but simply don’t have the PC skills to get the job done. In fact, the Video Transfer doesn’t even need a PC to do it.

Unveilled just in time for CES, the Video Transfer has a USB 2.0 interface (pity no firewire) that allows users to simply daisy chain the device from any vide source directly to a mass storage device like an iPod or PSP or even USB flash drive. With the press of the single main button, the Video Transfer then encodes the source video into H.264 video at D1 quality, then saves it onto the storage device. It can work with DVD players, set top cable or satellite converters, and even VHS players sand camcorders (It’s ideal for those who wish to convert those old VHS and hi8 home movies). And gamers will love the ability to directly record gaming sessions from any console. Imagine all those YouTube Halo videos coming.

“With Pinnacle Video Transfer, video capture and direct transfer has never been easier,” said Tanguy Leborgne, Pinnacle Systems Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. “Being able to transfer videos to an iPod, PSP or USB device without having to copy the files to your PC is an added bonus because it saves both valuable time and hard drive space. PC-less recording and the device’s small, compact size also make it a convenient solution for people who are on the go.”

With a suggested retail price of $130, the Video Transfer will go on sale beginning next week. Ppre-orders will begin on January 7, 2008 at pinnaclesys.com.

Every year, January is all about CES in Las Vegas. It’s the high tech Disneyland for the gadget obsessed. Everything with a circuit will be announced and drooled over. But already, the one item that’s catching everyone’s attention is Panasonic’s monster 150 inch Plasma HDTV.

Dubbed as the largest model in the world, it measures 47 inches larger than the current record holder, also by Panasonic, although to be fair, its designed Matsushita. The screen measures 2 meters by 3.5 meters, and you can bet it’s resolution will be much better than the 103 inch model, which sports a 3001:1 contrast ratio and over 2 million pixels. This all means that in High Defintion, it may be difficult to tell the difference between a real person and one on the screen unless one was standing right there talking to them. Which is cool for some great teleconferencing options, much less enjoying one’s favorite movies like they were in the scene. Too bad it’s in plasma though. Until persistent burn in problems are completely solved, it’s a heck of a lot to pay for 150 inch ghost images.

The new 150-inch plasma HDTV should be available to the public in 2009, and hopefully by then the cost won’t be so astronomical to prevent the common millionaire from buying one. Meanwhile, they’ll just have to settle for that 103 inch plasma.

Believe it or not the preparations for the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas start well in advance of the January exhibition date. The decent hotels will sell out long before the end of the year and companies are already booking exhibition space.

Why mention this now? Well here at CG we’re going through the press registration process for CES 2008 and that reminded me that I made a few notes from my first CES in January this year. It was fun, but don’t let anyone kid you that it wasn’t hard work! On re-reading the notes it seems that we spent an awful lot of time just walking to where we needed to be, and it also looks like I have a slight pre-occupation with food! An unintentional insight into my personality I feel

Anyway, if you’re interested in what it was like trying to cover the world’s largest consumer electronics show with two people read on… (it might take a while to load though, there are a fair few photos)

===============================
Saturday 6 Jan

This diary starts with 10 hours of boredom on a plane. Land at Las Vegas international airport, collect bags and get taxi to hotel. We land at about 1300, get to hotel around 1500 give or take. Turns out the hotel offers wifi to the rooms for a nominal fee, which we immediately sign up for.

1700 – After dumping kit in room and freshening up it’s time to find our way to the first event of the show – the “CES Unveiled” event.

1710 – Pick jaw up from floor. It’s my first time in Vegas and the CES unveiled event is at one of the more impressive casino hotels – the Venetian. If you’ve been there then you’ll know what I mean. If not, I’m not sure words alone can describe the scale of it. It’s big! First order of business is to *find* the convention center inside the Venetian (easy enough as long as you don’t get lost in the sea of slot machines!). Next job is to register our attendance at CES and pick up our press bags and badges.

The Venetian…

1800 – Hit “unveiled” and head straight for the buffet – it was a long flight! After taking care of the body’s immediate needs we circled the show floor, seeing what was about. Took various product photos and collected some press info. Bumped into someone from LG who told us about the press conference tomorrow morning. Was unsure whether I’d be up for an 8am start though!

2300 – We find ourselves back in the hotel, writing up the day’s events and trying to work out when the last time we slept was.

The “CES Unveiled” event
================================
Sunday 7 Jan

My body clock’s now well and truly wrecked so I wake up at about 5am. Doze and snooze for a bit, then come about 0630 I chuck some clothes on, kick start the body with breakfast at Denny’s and head to the show to check out the aforementioned LG press conference (0800 start). I’m queueing for about 15 minutes before that conference starts – it’s a busy event! They’re announcing the world’s first and only combined HD-DVD/Blu ray player which has got the assembled press buzzing.

0900 – I have found through necessity (My pen gave out) that taking notes on a laptop as someone is speaking is actually far preferable to trying to write them down longhand. I shall be using that method in future! Anyway the press conference is over and I spend the rest of the morning walking around the various floors and halls at the Venetian, trying to match my printed maps to the real world and getting a few bearings. I still get lost in the casino though, it’s just ways to lose money as far as the eye can see… There are wall to wall press conferences for the whole day if you want to attend but I figure that I’m better off trying to get my bearings for when things get really busy tomorrow.

1200 – Back at the hotel and I meet up with Al to discuss the day. We decide to head back to the Venetian as Al also wants to get his bearings. We decide to take laptop and camera too. We’re learning at this point that being anywhere without either is asking for trouble since you never know when you’ll need them. As luck would have it there are still some cookies and muffins left in the press room so at least that’s lunch taken care of! We also find out that we have to get vouchers to confirm attendance at the Gates keynote, which we duly collect.

1700. So we’re queueing in the line for the keynote. It’s a l-o-n-g queue. We eventually get seated about 1730 give or take, and then there’s some waiting around as the room fills before the keynote starts at 1830.

The queue to get into the Gates keynote, after the other queue to register for it!…

2000. The keynote was set up like a rock concert – video screens, spotlights and a large stage up front. Shame Gates didn’t say anything particularly new really! The Xbox 360 TV stuff is very impressive but it’s all going to be service based so you’ll pay for the privilege. We go back to the press room to type up the keynote but it takes longer than either of us thought and they kick us out at 2100 when the room closes.

2110 – We’re lost! We took a wrong turn somewhere on the way out and ended up in Venice, watching a gondola punt down the canal under a clear blue midday sky as a band plays music to the people seated in the plaza. How surreal is that?

2200 – One thing the Americans know how to do well is cook steak and the temptation is too great. The notes I’ve made are on my laptop, so the plan is to type them up when we get back to the hotel and post using hotel wifi.

2330 – Disaster. The hotel’s wifi is dying under load. Even if you can get on to it, there’s no bandwidth to be had. After a futile couple of attempts to post the keynote we call it a night and crash about midnight.

============================
Monday 8 Jan

Up at 6am – mainly because body clock’s still bust. fire up laptop, connect to crappy hotel WLAN (because nobody else is stupid enough to be up at this time in the morning) and post initial keynote speech from last night.

0800 – Press room in the Venetian. I Wasn’t expecting this but it seems that they lay on food for us, so the day starts with coffee and bagels and we finish posting last nights stories using the press room wifi. There’s already a clash on our time as I’ve got a meeting booked at the same time as the MS / Toshiba press conference so we have to split for that.

0900 – hit the show floor. Al splits to take a cab to the MGM grand for the MS / tosh press conference while I walk around sands expo getting a feeling for what’s where and also trying to orient myself on the printed map that I have showing companies of interest! Find a few things to post about, chat to a few companies, take some photos.

1000 – Time for my meeting and demo with Trimersion. The company is having huge problems with interference from all the other wireless devices the show is full of. I walk away to give them some more time and walk the floor some more.

1020 – Back with Trimersion, still no joy on the wireless front so I get an abridged demo, ask some questions (actually quite a few) and get a press pack.

1100 – Back in the press room, digesting previous couple of hours. Download and process photos from camera (crop / resize for web) and make a few posts to CG covering morning’s products. Don’t let anyone tell you that posting a story is a five minute business – it can quite easily take 15 or 20 mins to get even a small post up to the site, by the time you count processing photos, researching web links and of course actually typing the words up.

1200 – Lunch arrives in the form of pallets full of boxes containing sandwiches. I grab one and meet up with Al to discuss his press conference and what we’re doing in the afternoon.

1300 – Walk halfway across the venetian to visit another company I had my eye on. They’re in the towers, which is a completely different set of suites on another floor. They are also having first day show problems (Logistical this time rather than technical) so arrange to meet tomorrow to get full demo.

1400 – having trudged back to where I started, I meet back up with Al to take shuttle bus to LVCC. This is to attend the CNET “Next Big Thing” session and also to reconnaitre the LVCC since neither of us has been there before.

1420 – LVCC is *big*. Get slightly lost (again) but manage to orient ourselves eventually!

1500 – It’s taken us the past 1/2 hour to find and walk to the meeting room. We’re not late (just) but it’s a busy session so we find one of the last seats in the back row.

1630 – More recon around the LVCC show floor. Find out that although car stereo section has great looking models there’s not a lot going on that would interest CG readers. Take a wander outside to see what’s happening in the tents across the road. Al’s hops finding gene kicks in and we find free beer at the concierge tent so decide to take the weight off our feet for a bit

1730 – There were some stupid queues for the coaches back to the various hotels, but we seem to have struck lucky and there’s no queue for ours so although we get caught in the rush hour traffic we at least have a seat on the coach. Get back to venetian and immediately follow crowd of people over to the Wynn for “Showstoppers“. We only found out about this last night when it was recommended by one of Al’s contacts, so we don’t know what to expect.

Inside the Venetian, on the second floor at about 9pm!

1930 – Yes, we’ve been on our feet for the past couple of hours. First the walk to the hotel, then the walk through the hotel (that’s not as insignificant as you’d think) and *then* stuck in registration queue for what seems like an eternity. Showstoppers is a pre-registered event but it seems like 200+ people (including us) have turned up hoping to get in on the door and the organisers are checking each and every one for eligibility. To top it all, the wifi they’re using goes down so the people on the door can’t check our details… Kudos to Al for persevering, I’d have abandoned hope about 20 minutes ago but we eventually manage to show them the site on a mobile phone(!) and they agree that we are qualified for entry and let us in. Next year we pre-register for this one!

2000 – It was worth persevering just for the food. When your hotel has gourmet chefs, even finger food is special but when they then put on a carvery… you can imagine! Unfortunately I’m starting to feel the effects of the day so I can’t really appreciate it. After all it’s over 12 hours since we got up and we’re still working. This isn’t a complete holiday – we’re here for a reason Off to work we go, walking the floor to see what’s here. We do come across a number of cool things so we prepare the posts on the laptops ahead of time ready to post when we get some internet access back.

2100 – There must be something wrong with me. A waiter-propelled tray of the largest cookies I have ever seen has wandered past me, followed by similarly sized chocolate brownies and I don’t want any. All I want to do at this point is finish writing up the things I’ve seen so I can post them and get to bed.

2200 – Al agreed that we’d put in enough hours for today so we’re at the pub next to the hotel. We dissect the day over a drink and plan (or at least sketch out) tomorrow.

2300 – Back in the hotel, downloading photos of the day for processing into tomorrow’s posts (see, work never stops)

===================================
Tuesday 9 Jan.

Once again I wake up at 0530 for some reason, so come about 0600 I get bored and start finishing off yesterday’s unposted content. It’s going to be a spread out day – I want to see asimo at the LVCC but I also have meetings at the venetian and the travel time is going to eat into the day.

0900 – Visit Neosonik to see if they’ve resolved their logistical problems yet. Nope, still waiting for kit Time for me to get to LVCC to see Asimo.

1000 – I’ve been sat in traffic for 30 mins trying to get to LVCC from sands on the shuttle bus. It’s the monorail to get back I think

1030 – Asimo demo – Way cool! Busy too – I think this was one of the highlights of the show judging by the crowds…

1130 – Monorail worked but dropped us off at harrahs, which is yet another hotel I’ve not been in. So once again I get lost in a sea of slots on the casino floor looking for the exit to the strip.

Crowds waiting to see Asimo strut his stuff

1200 – Meet Al for lunch at press room. Check site and discover incoming link from CESBloggers.com. Who are they we ask ourselves. Turns out that they’re an aggregator of – yes you guessed it – bloggers at CES! They work with the industry to help sort and filter relevant blog posts and it looks like they like us – thanks guys!

Anyway there’s mention of a get together at the Atomic testing museum later tonight – should be interesting. right now I need to write up Asimo though.

1600 – we’ve just come back to the press room from another tour of the Sands show floor and decided to walk to the museum. There are some posts in the bag, we’ll do those later.

1900 – So we’ve been walking for about 40 mins. To be fair Al was right on the money with his directions (unusually!) but possibly the distance estimation needed some work! Still, we’re here and given the state of the traffic we probably beat any cab we could have taken.

The museum is pretty cool, and there are also some interesting people to speak to. This shindig is partly sponsored by OQO so of course I get to have a play with one of those. I want, I want…

2100 – Turns out a few of the people we were chatting to headed over to “Bloghaus” at the Bellagio. We have no idea what this is but we attach ourselves to the party anyway and soon enough we’re enjoying beer and pizza at a suite reserved for bloggers. Boy do I feel old in this crowd! This is the first time since I’ve been here that we’ve not been working past showtime so we take the opportunity to kick back. Talk is about macworld (not that surprising given the demographic) and it looks like Steve has once again managed to redefine a product by putting OSX onto a phone.

0200 – Bed. I may have enjoyed the evening a little too much – we’ll see how I feel in the morning

====================================
Wednesday 10 Jan

Up at 7, so an improvement on the time of day if not the number of hours slept. Fairly clear head too which is handy!

Full day at the show floor. Still the Sands, we’ve not even touched the LVCC in any depth yet. What to say – it was a lot of walking, a lot of photos and a lot of typing. Myself and Al split up to cover different areas but even so it was way to big to sensibly get everything that was going.

One thing we decided to do yesterday was not cover the press conferences. Those things eat into time like you wouldn’t believe – there’s an hour of “this is what we do” which includes a 10 minute segment on the thing that everyone’s there for. Interesting stuff and doubtless worth reporting on but with only two of us we can’t spare a person to spend his whole time going from press conference to press conference. Also, as you may have gathered by now this place is big so when two press conferences are scheduled back to back you’re physically not going to have time to get from one to the other.

1600 – I give Neosonik one last chance but they’re still having problems and the promised 5.1 audio and video fails to materialise. Ah well, these things happen – it would be a rare show when nothing went wrong!

“Paris”, one of the other casino hotels on Las Vegas Boulevard

We decided to spend the evening walking the strip as we’d not actually seen any of Vegas yet and the day was exhausting enough without working into the evening too. Important note for non US residents – make sure you have photo ID with you at all time! Neither of us look like young whippersnappers but we still got turned away from Coyote Ugly as we’re not in the habit of carrying our passport with us…

===============================================
Thursday 11 Jan

0930 – after a relatively late breakfast we take a final walk around the show floor to see if we’ve missed anything. OK, so we’re slacking today by starting late – it’s the last day of the show and it closes early so a lot of people are already packing up. As it happens we did miss a few really neat things, so we collect press kits and take a few photos for the final posts. In fact I’m sure we missed more than a few things – the show floor seems to magically transform itself so that you keep wandering into new stuff, even though you think you’ve covered the isles before.

Lunch is a pretty poor affair this time – expectations were high from the previous few days to so only see the vegetarian option left was a real downer for me! We bump into Charlie from Gizmodo as we’re eating and swap stories about the show. It’s pretty much the end for us, once we’ve done these final few posts we can finally be “off duty” and go and enjoy ourselves!

1600 – The AVN show traditionally overlaps with CES and this year is no exception so we take a couple of hours to wander around prior to the blue men concert which marks our final night in Vegas. “Interesting” is the word of choice!

And that’s it for this year! Fun, exhausting and a huge learning experience for both of us. Even though I’d been hearing about the show for years I still wasn’t prepared for the scale of it when I finally got here. It looks like we managed to rack up nearly 50 posts from this event which isn’t bad at all for two people who were making it up as they went!

At Broadclip, you can find you that MediaCatcher you should have seen at CES (I think it was post iPhone debacle and everyone had permanently lost their heads at that point in time.)
It works like the beloved Tivo, only they have one version for the radio, and the other for the telly (we call it a TV over here, but what can you do?)

Here is their main page (for Broadclip, it links right to both Mediacatcher models)

For the real poop, just check the link here for the lowdown video goodness, you’ll be glad you did!

It’s a pretty sweet setup, but, you have to have a way to get the data into your lappy or desktop. You’ll likely want to use a desktop, so it can be left on all the time and bring in as much goodness as possible.

It looks like a pretty sweet setup and best of all, it can easily push all the data (video or audio) straight into your ipod or other player. It looks like a pretty sweet rig. Can’t wait to actually see it in action!

Here’s their main “media” page with some decent screenshots and video. Let’s save you some time though and show you the video straight out of the gate.

Thanks Krunker

Wireless speakers have been around for a while now, usually used in surround applications where long cable runs are impractical. The problem with them historically has been the sound quality – mention wireless to an audiophile and you’ll get a pretty unenthusiastic response (after all, someone who’s just spent $1000 on speaker cable isn’t going to tell you that it’s unnecessary).

Neosonik have challenged this assumption with their new wireless technology and at CES this year they were announcing a world first: an audiophile quality 5.1 wireless audio AND video system. That’s a pretty impressive claim, especially for a new and relatively unknown company.

I stopped by their demo room at the show to have a look.

The Neosonik system is comprised of active speakers that contain the amplifiers and crossovers directly within the speaker assembly so the only cable going to the speakers is a power lead. The wireless transmitter is integrated into the preamp (pictured) so for all practical purposes you can forget about the wireless nature of the equipment as there’s no special setup needed.

I had a good listen to the 2 channel stereo setup and it certainly sounded like the system has potential. It’s not easy to evaluate a strange system in a strange room but from what I heard I can say that the technology certainly shows promise – the sound was full and clear, space between instruments was distinct and it was easily the equal of other high quality audio systems I’ve heard.

“That’s fine and dandy”, I hear you say, “but what’s this about wireless video?”. Well that’s the bad news – Looks like the trade show gremlins had come out to play so Neosonik were unable to show the video working when I was there. They assured me that it was a logistical problem rather than a technical one and the technology does work as advertised – we’ll have to take their word on that! I did hear the 5.1 wireless audio working but video wasn’t happening.

Bad news #2: It’s not going to be available in your local circuit city – they’re looking at a guide price upwards of $10,000! In the world of top end audio and video components that’s not as loopy as it might sound (in fact it’s positively cheap compared to some other items I could mention) but it looks like the rest of us will have to wait a few years before we get a wire-free home cinema.

First of all, before talking about the newest Digital Photo Frame that I found, I would like to say that we have reached the point of exhaustion on the digi frames topic, this is the item number 10 and as always here is a preview of the other frames we talked about:

1 – Picture Keyring

2 – Digital Photo Keychain

3 – Yet Another Digital Picture Frame

4 – Wi-Fi Gmail / Flickr Enabled Picture Frame

9 – King Jim Digital Frame

Second of all, Momento is the name of the frame (momento is actually a word in the Portuguese language, it means moment when translated to English) that was presented during the greatest electronic show event a.k.a. CES 2007.

Third of all, this is the 2nd digital frame that I found that features RSS technology so you can actually have awesome new photos everyday by synchronizing with Flickr and other online sites like Google Picasa, Windows Live Space or Yahoo News. You can do all this thanks to the wireless integration that connects the frame with the upcoming OS from uncle Bill – Windows Vista.

Fourth of all, you can change the appearance of the Momento (hopefully for the better) because it has removable mattes and frames that allow you to give your Momento a look unique to you.

Fifth of all, there are 2 distinctive models – the Momento70 and 100. The lowest number also has the smallest TFT screen only measuring 7-inches, while the Momento100 has a big 10.2-inch display. Both models can play audio (MP3, WMA) and support different storage devices (SD/MMC/xD/SmartMedia/Memory and USB).

Visit MomentoLive for more information.

Thinking about it these beanies do have one distinct advantage, you can’t hear people telling you what a pillock you look .

It looks like SandDisk is not messing around to get its Sansa players out on the market. The flash memory manufacturer presented in fact the Sansa Connect MP3 player over this year’s CES, and it received a lot of positive feedback.

The new player comes with a 2,2 inch TFT color screen, an internal speaker and flash memory instead of hard disks. The really innovative feature, however, is the Wi-Fi connectivity. The Sansa will be able to connect to the Internet from any open wireless hotspot, creating a myriad of new opportunities.

SanDisk is claiming for instance that users will be able to share music and photos, to interact with other users, recommend new stuff, listen to streaming radio over the Internet and the like. Here is a quote from the press release: “the new Sansa Connect will boast innovative Internet capabilities designed to keep music aficionados connected to a wide range of new music via subscription services and streaming Internet radio1 with no PC required. Designed to work with premium Internet services, the flash-based MP3 player will also contain community features for recommending music and photos with the simple click of a button and a “live” Wi-Fi connection.”

Some people are speculating that in the near future a microphone add-on could be included, meaning that the MP3 player could also be used for peer-to-peer VoIP applications. I am not sure whether the Sansa will erode significant market share from the iPod, but its innovative use of Wi-Fi capabilities will certainly raise the bar for rival producers.

The product will be available in March 2007 in the United States and the 4GB version will sell for $249,99.

WowWee’s new robot, which appeared at this year’s CES, is called Roboquad and amused people crawling around on its four legs. The robot comes with infra-red sensors and apparently it can be used as guard since it is able to scan for sounds and movements, up to 10 feet away. The manufacturer is claiming that the robot should also be able to identify objects of different sizes, move around furniture and detect the edge of doorways.

The Robotsrule site has a summary of the robot’s features:

It can identify motion at a distance of about 10 feet. Once identified it can pursue the moving object

It is a four legged robot with a chassis that is designed to move easily in any direction

The Roboquad’s main theme is fast movement in nearly any ground based direction and it is capable of 3 speeds of movement

The Roboquad is react quickly to it’s environment

It has a strange little head that can sweeps the room with a tightly focused infrared beam

The Roboquad can even identify the sizes of objects

It is sensitive enough to detect the fine details in it’s environment like the edges of doorways

It is expected to hit store shelves in fall of this year (2007) and to retail for a little above $100

Now if you consider the price of those LEGO Mindstorms out there I would not be surprised if the sales for this toy were large, and the best part is that you will not need to assemble tiny parts before starting with the fun!

If you were paying attention to all the hype building up to the Apple iPhone announcement on Tuesday, then you might recall the little snag concerning who actually owns the “iPhone” name.

Even though Apple unveiled the iPhone in San Francisco this week, Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems Inc., announced a product called the iPhone on December 18th, 2006. The Linksys iPhone is a Web-enabled telephone handset capable of making calls over the Internet using voice over Internet protocol (VOIP).

So how can two different companies lay claim to the “iPhone” name? That’s the problem… they can’t.

Linksys, actually owns the “iPhone” trademark because of a Cisco acquisition. A company called Infogear registered the “iPhone” name in 1996. Then Cisco then absorbed the “iPhone” trademark when it acquired Infogear in the year 2000.

So what happens now? It’s all up to the lawyers. Cisco filed a lawsuit against Apple yesterday in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco. Basically Cisco and Apple need to reach a settlement or Apple will have to call their iPhone something different like iChat Mobile.

According to the NY Post, Cisco thought it had reached a deal with Apple. The two companies were reportedly engaged in heated talks over the “iPhone” name the past few weeks leading up to the Apple iPhone announcement.

“We sent them final terms on Monday, but we never got approval back,” Cisco spokesman John Noh told The Post. “We’re very open to sharing the trademark. We made that clear. But then they went ahead and used the name without our permission.”

Apple has been trying to get the iPhone name away from Cisco since 2001 when they first released the iPod. Will Apple finally be successful? They obviously have something up their sleeve or they wouldn’t have halted talks with Cisco and just announced the iPhone this week. It will be interesting to see what happens these next few months.

Apple plans on releasing the iPhone in June 2007.

“Photo wallets” are nothing new – devices to back up your memory card to a hard drive have become common in the past few years. The Sanho Hyperdrive is one such device and while it may not be the newest product concept there’s still room for a well implemented one.

The Hyperdrive has a rechargable Li-Ion battery, takes a whole list of card formats that I’m not going to bother retyping (most of them), shows up as a PC hard drive via USB and has the usual “press one button to dump the card” function.

Things I like:

It doesn’t try to be a photo viewer, video player or TV adapter

It is available as an empty chassis for you to put your own hard drive

It verifies the data has copied correctly before wiping your card

it’s fast

The bare chassis is $149, the 160gb version is $399 and you can get them from www.hypershop.com

The title is deliberately vague, because it’s so different to anything out there that I can’t draw a comparison with anything else. I think we’ll stick with “controller” as that’s nice and generic.

The basic idea is that you manipulate the ball in X and Y axis, just like a mouse, but the controller can push back on any one of it’s three connecting arms. The end result is motion feedback unlike anything else I’ve experienced. It’s much more sophisticated than a standard “rumble pack” – with this thing you can feel whether you’re pushing through treacle or sliding along ice.

The ball head that you grip is detatchable so in theory it could be replaced with a gun, a joystick or something more specialised although right now you get a standard grip.

Software does need to be modified to make full use of the controller though so don’t expect to start using it with your favouite shooter right away. Novint are talking to publishers though so it may start showing up in your supported control list soon!

I’ve seen some pretty cool mice in my time (Slim Mouse, SD Card Reader Mouse, hand warming mouse, etc.), I can now add to that list the slipper mouse, a mouse you control with your feet.

At first it looked a bit odd to use, you wear a slipper on one foot which you drag around to move the pointer whilst with the other foot you can hit pedals in place of mouse buttons. It’s never going to replace the standard mouse but for people with severe disabilities this could make using a computer a whole load easier.

Further info available at www.billinc.com and I’d like to thank Tianou “Phil” Li for taking the time to demo this to me.

Yomping around CES is a tiring job (but it beats going to work for a living), dotted around the show floor there are some very welcome rest areas where you can sit down, relax and get a free revitalising massage. Nearby one of these relaxing zones I came across the Massage Mouse.

The Massage Mouse resembles (very loosely speaking) well an electronic mouse but instead of moving a pointer around it massages your muscles. You attach the adhesive mouse feet to where ever you feel your muscles need treating, switch on and feel a tapping, tingling or kneading feeling.

The massage mouse actually worked really well and I could of sat at that booth longer than I did. I like it so much I bought <strike>the company</strike> one which will hopefully get me a few brownie points when I get back.

It’s innovative but personally I found it pretty unergonomic to use. I’ve not got big hands but I had to scrunch them up to get any sort of grip on the mouse and I certainly couldn’t use it for any length of time. On the other hand I’m not a girl with small hands and long nails – perhaps it works better in that case

It’s another robot with a cutesy name, SPYKE the WiFi Spy Robot. It’s due to be sold under the Meccano brand name which is pretty appropriate as you’ll have to make him your self.

Once constructed you’ll be able to control Spyke from any Internet enabled PC, he incorporates VOIP and a web-cam so you’ll be able to send him on dangerous spying missions and watch the results from the other side of the world. When SPYKE is running low on robot juice he’ll use his auto parking system to dock with his recharging system.

You should be able to make your own Skype in September 2007 with a price point planned at under $300. More info (but not a lot more) over at Spyke World.
