R2D2 Wireless Web Camera

May 21st, 2008 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Office Gadgets, PC Gadgets

r2d2-webcam.jpgR2D2 wears many hats in the movies, and I am constantly amazed at the incompetence of the Galactic Empire to outwit a mere droid. It is a wonder how such incompetence still resulted in the Galaxy being ruled by the evil Emperor Palpatine, but that’s another story for another day. Here we have the R2D2 Wireless Web Camera that increases your cool factor by ten.

This daft droid is not only a remote control wireless webcam, but will also play your web based audio, has a digital camera, can be used as an internet phone, has voice record, wirelessly transmits images, and has possibly the coolest remote control unit in existence. What looks exactly like the hilt of a Lightsaber is your ticket to control. Bristling with buttons and glowing red when on (and blue when using it as a phone), this wireless remote gives you access to all of R2D2’s functions, and even has Lightsaber sound effects. Whether you’re using this top piece of kit as an internet phone, a digital camera, a movie camera (great for trundling around the office filming what’s going on out of sight) or as a remote control security droid, the R2D2 Wireless Webcam is the most vital piece of equipment for every Jedi warrior.

I must say this is potentially the most expensive webcam I’ve ever come across, as this particular R2D2 retails for a whopping £299. No wonder George Lucas has been laughing all the way to the bank since the late 1970s.

Roku and Netflix Work Together to Bring Videos to You

Okay, I figure that someone has to report on this, so it might as well be me. The fact is the Roku might be the best thing to happen to television since television.

So what is the Roku? Well, he was the Avatar before Aang, but that’s another story. The Roku is a set-top box that works with the popular online rental company Netflix to give a user access to over 10,000 movies.

No discs are required for this guy, and there is no hard drive happening here either. None of those features are needed, since all you need to do is select the video, and it streams without waiting. Why, the Roku is like a YouTube for movies!

rolly.jpgSony’s Rolly might be around in other countries for a few months already, but Sony has just officially released it in the US. This unique music entertainment player comes in a highly portable palm-size form factor shaped like an egg, and will be able to roll and spin as though it is dancing to the current tunes being played. This could be the next big thing in the portable media player market, as there is a huge novelty factor attached to it that will definitely make those group outings more fun and exciting compared to just toting an iPod or Zune around.

VHS To Digital Video Converter

May 19th, 2008 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets

vhs.jpgDo you happen to have one of those ancient VHS tapes in your home? Why not preserve them in a modern digital format with the VHS To Digital Video Converter?

This device converts your old VHS tapes to digital video files and saves them onto your computer, allowing you to preserve your VHS movies, TV shows, family videos, and more without relying on a conversion service. Video playback can be paused, allowing you to skip sections at your discretion, and video is stored in real-time as an MPEG4 file on your computer, enabling you to then burn content onto DVDs using the included software. Converted digital files can also be copied to a video iPod or other portable media player. The device has RCA outputs that connect to a TV so you can monitor your videos as they are converted. The unit plugs into a PC running Windows XP or Vista with an included USB cable (USB 2.0 required). The included software allows you to edit your videos.

At least you don’t have to search out photo shops that offer such a service and save yourself a handsome amount, assuming you have a massive backlog for conversion in the first place. The VHS To Digital Video Converter retails for $249.95.
