With Kaleidoscape, it’s déjà-vu all over again …

June 18th, 2008 by James in Audio/Video Gadgets

Oh boy. Another format war? If Kaleidoscape has it’s way, you bet. Believing it’s line of overpriced 1080p DVD players have far superior resolution than the current king of the next generation hill (Blu-ray), Kaleidoscape is willing to step over the bodies of one HD DVD player after another and challenge Blu-ray for the DVD prize.

PhonoFone II

June 18th, 2008 by Mark R in iPod gadgets

I think we all know that iPod speaker docks are a dime a dozen, and the only thing that makes iPod dock stand out above another is the design. While some designers go for a contemporary or futuristic look, the PhotoFone II owes its unique look to the past. Apparently, some designer was completely enamored by the old gramophones of the nineteenth century and made it for the iPod.

The horn of the PhotoFone II is not just there for an old-school aesthetic. No, there was a reason why these older record players were so horny (looking) back then. In this case, the acoustics of the horn-shaped speaker can boost the sound up to 55 decibels. That might not be enough to disturb your neighbors, but is good enough to fill a room with quiet sound, which is exactly what those old gramophones did back then.

Optoma Handheld Projector for Mobile Devices

June 18th, 2008 by Mark R in Audio/Video Gadgets, Coolest Mobile News, Miscellaneous Gadgets, Projectors

The other day we reported on a possible mini-projector for the iPhone. I just found out that a company called Optoma has just introduced the first Pico projector based on the DLP (Digital Light Processing) Pico chipset. This projector isn’t just for the iPhone or that snazzy iPhone 3G, but it is designed for any mobile device including iPods, PDAs, smart phones, and digital cameras.

According to the company, this is a “world’s first”, and will allow users to share photos and videos with a projected image that is 100 times bigger than that of their normal screen. Best of all, this projector is small enough to fit in a user’s shirt pocket.

Backyard Outdoor Theater System

June 13th, 2008 by AndrewD in Audio/Video Gadgets, Home Theater

You’ve got a beautiful backyard, with a gorgeous pool and a deck large enough to size a decent sized party, but something is missing from this luxurious scene. Where is the multimedia? A bunch of people standing around chatting on a pool deck can only steal the crowd’s attention for so long. And a music system blasting cheesy classical music can only accomplish so much.

If you’ve got the money, why not add an awesome theater system to go along with your poolside facade? The Backyard Theater System is an all-in-one unit for displaying video on a large screen on your very own property. Awesome for both sporting events and movies alike, this theater system from Frontgate offers the very finest of outdoor displays.

HP monitor does a stunning 1 billion colors

June 13th, 2008 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Office Gadgets, PC Gadgets

Granted, cell phone displays these days on the high end segment are able to display a whopping 16.7 million colors, and that specification doesn’t really matter since the display is so small to begin with. What about your monitor? Surely it can do more than that, but HP’s latest offering will definitely put whatever number your monitor can muster to shame. The new HP DreamColor Display (we mentioned it briefly earlier this week) is a new LCD screen which is able to offer a whopping 1 billion colors at the very minimum in a 30-bit, LED-backlit display. Of course, it would be a waste to purchase this just for word processing and surfing the Internet, so you must realize that this targets those who deal with plenty of colors in their everyday work including designers and animators. This phenomenal display is now shipping worldwide for $3,499.

SRS works with Syntax-Brillian

June 12th, 2008 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets

SRS Labs will collaborate with U.S.-based Syntax-Brillian in order to license the former’s SRS TruSurround XT surround sound technology for the latter’s 2 Series and 6 Series brand LCD HDTVs. Well, this sounds (no pun intended) great to me since most HDTVs do not exactly come with sterling audio performance, and they often need to be augmented by some sort of dedicated home theater system. Of course, the inclusion of SRS Labs’ technology doesn’t mean you can ditch your home theater system, but at least the audio coming out from the HDTV itself won’t be too shabby and for small apartments and rooms, there might not even be a need to install a dedicated audio system.
