Sleep Headphones

July 31st, 2008 by AndrewD in Audio/Video Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets

How do you feel about looking like a sweat band-wearer straight out of the 80s? You’re okay with that? How about if we add in an awkward wire extending out of the forehead area? Don’t worry about looking cool. You’ll be asleep for most of the time. These are the Sleep Headphones, straight from the pages of Etsy.

The Sleep Headphones are made to fit comfortably around your head and ears while you sleep. Wearing a big set of muff headphones just doesn’t do the trick when your trying to pass out. But then again, listening to your significant other’s persistent snoring isn’t doing much for your sleeping habits either. The Sleep Headphones look like they could be worn all night without a hitch.

Dell goes once more into the breach with Wi-Fi MP3 player

July 31st, 2008 by James in Audio/Video Gadgets

Once again proving that the iPod leads the pack where it wants to go, Dell Computers has introduced a new MP3 player for under $100. If you remember the last Dell MP3 player, you know that didn’t end pretty. So what makes the tech world think this will be any different? The answer is Wi-Fi.

Sonic Impact SoundPads are stick-on speakers

July 30th, 2008 by Ally in Audio/Video Gadgets

If you enjoy toying with certain effects to add to the sound of your music you have stored away on your iPod, you might give these speakers a try.  They are SoundPads that stick to any surface, which means the wall, a poster, box, bookshelf, etc.  Each item you attach it to will give a slightly different sound.  It would also make for an easy solution to put music in places that would otherwise be difficult.

iSkin Duoband armband for the iPod Nano

July 30th, 2008 by Ally in Audio/Video Gadgets, iPod gadgets

iSkin has released several different cases to keep iPods of all different sizes well protected.  Well now they have created a sporty armband to keep your Nano safe.  This is quite obviously for the newer Nano, as you can see from the picture.  I always like the armbands for the Nano a bit better than the Touch.  It just seems like the iPod Touch would move around too much and get obnoxious when trying to do any physical activities.

Turntables are getting cool again …

July 29th, 2008 by James in Audio/Video Gadgets, Tech News

Fueled by interest in hard to find vinyl records, turntables are suddenly cool again according to the Consumer Electronics Association. Sales for turntables skyrocketed last quarter from 19,000 a month in 2007, to nearly twice as many a month as of April of this year. The increase stems from young people becoming interested in vinyl as an option to avoiding digital rights management as well as combing used record stores for deals on hard to find albums of classic bands they’ve come to enjoy.

USB Shell Speaker for your iPod

July 29th, 2008 by Ally in Audio/Video Gadgets, iPod gadgets

If you haven’t had enough of the novelty iPod speakers just yet, here’s another one for you.  This one comes in the shape of a shell.  Which just seems a bit bizarre and almost awkward.  Pig speakers, those were totally logical and cool.  This is just pointless, obviously.  Pig speakers are cooler, due to their pigish nature.  This, it’s just a shell.  Alright, so this may be cool to those with a love for the beach.  Especially in the middle of winter when you’re going out of your mind waiting on summer to come back.

DIY Music Box

July 29th, 2008 by Edwin in Audio/Video Gadgets, DIY Gadgets

Most of us will know of music boxes as pleasant pieces of home decorative items that tinkle the day away while you take a break from all the rigors of the office. Folks who have a penchant for something different might be interested in the DIY Music Box that is capable of accepting any punched paper “score”.

This is the ‘big brother’ version of the Music Box Set. It has 20 notes instead of 15, so it can play 2.5 octaves. As a music box, it is quite a bit bigger, at 14.5 x 7 x 2.75cm high. Again, like the smaller music box, it just plays the white notes, and does not play sharps or flats. Included is the Music Box, one pre-punched strip which plays Romeo and Juliet, 2 blank strips, and a hole punch, so that you can create your own tunes! The strips are 66cm x 7cm.

You can pick up this alternative music box for £15.99.

SanDisk Sansa Fuze Review

July 28th, 2008 by Al in Audio/Video Gadgets, Gadget Reviews

Sansa Fuze

The Sansa Fuze from SanDisk, is a cool little MP3/4 player along the same vein as the iPod Nano. We’ve recently been sent one to play with so here are our thoughts and findings (or a review so to speak).

Aesthetically the Fuze is a cute little player. The physical UI consists of a rotating front dial which also acts as the 4 navigation buttons with the center button for selection. The display crisp with a resolution of 220 x 176, large enough for watching the odd music video but you wouldn’t want to watch a feature length film on it. Sound quality was good (though as with just about any MP3 player the supplied headphones aren’t the greatest). What most impressed me about the Fuze are the extra features that you don’t find on other (note iPod) players, including:

  • Built in microphone
  • FM radio
  • microSD Slot, a really cheap way to expand the capacity
  • Easy to transfer files (drag and drop) without the need of propriety software

Though there are a few downsides:

  • Propriety USB connection, it obviously comes the cable but a standard mini USB connection would be much more convenient especially for charging
  • You bookmark videos but not audio books

The Fuze comes in 2, 4 and 8GB versions with prices starting from ~$70 at Amazon.
