Grab iPhone 2.0 Firmware A Day Early and Party In The App Store

July 10th, 2008 by AndrewD in Apple News, Mobile Phones

It’s not “officially” here just yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get it. And a day early no less. While digging through the Apple XML files just like any other true Apple fan with some extra time on their hands, MacRumors has dredged up the URL location for the iPhone 2.0 firmware upgrade. The download comes in the form of a .ipsw file, which you can install on your phone by holding down the “Option” key (shift on PCs) and clicking the “Check For Update” button on the iTunes iPhone menu.

Along with the new firmware comes the really big news of the day. The emergence of the Apple App Store, which has also proven to be live. I had a chance to dabble around with some of the apps, and let me tell you, it was well worth the wait.

Apple to Rogers: “Oh, Hell Naw!”

July 8th, 2008 by AndrewD in Apple News, Mobile Phones

Canadians have something to be truly pissed about. Finally, the iPhone 3G is about to set foot in North America, and Canadian wireless provider Rogers has to lay down some of the worse price plans you could possibly expect, even compared to Canadian wireless standards.

To start, there is absolutely no unlimited plan to speak of. The highest data allowance tops off at 2GB and only 300 sent text messages, which for most people is way more data than they’ll ever use in the first place, but even so, for $115 a month, you shouldn’t be setting any limits on anyone. Apple has had it with Rogers and they’re making it very clear. Sources say that they have officially pulled the iPhone off the Rogers sale racks, even before its launch on the 11th.

iPhone Timeline

Did you know the first public signs of the iPhone were way back in 1999, when Apple registered iPhone.org. Silver from iPhoneGold has put together a great timeline showing the history of the legendary iPhone, including domain registrations, trademarks. the famous 3% stock drop all the way up to the new iPhone 3G. Full sized iPhone timeline here, thanks Silver for spending a worthwhile couple of days researching and putting this together.

Logitech Finally Gives In, Launches Mac-Only Webcam

June 25th, 2008 by AndrewD in Apple News, Audio/Video Gadgets

After years of ignoring the existence of Apple’s Mac OS X, Logitech has finally given in to the demand. Assuming there is a demand there. Sure, modern Macs come with embedded webcams built right into the system, but you have to figure there are plenty of people who want a more feature rich alternative than the good old Photo Booth.

So great, Logitech has announced their new QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac systems. The first Logitech cam which works with the OS. But what can this new camera provide that our Macs don’t already offer us? Let’s take a look at the features and specs.

iPhone gets suite of applications

June 23rd, 2008 by Edwin in Apple News

The iPhone is definitely one of the more popular cell phones in the world at this point in time, at least in the mid-range group and above. After all, with the impending release of the 3G iPhone, you can bet your bottom dollar (or whatever denomination) that come July 11th, there will be a frenzy for this new handset, never mind the blood-sucking 2-year contract attached with it in certain places. With a phone this magical, surely there must be something more than the looks and ease-of-use that drives it? I believe that software on the iPhone does play a role in its huge popularity, and having said that, I would like to draw your attention to iPhoneApps - a ground-breaking, unique new software application product that features a generous choice of 10 of the most popular and commonly used PC applications that run non your iPhone. Sounds perfect for the casual computer user who dreads carrying around a laptop just to type a short letter on Microsoft Word.

Innovelis releases BudFits

June 20th, 2008 by Edwin in Apple News, Audio/Video Gadgets

Chances are the iPod (and now possibly iPhone) would be pretty popular devices to bring along with you while you engage in a form of vigorous exercise (swimming doesn’t count unless you’re rocking to a waterproof case and earphones), but that can result in the earbuds falling out. A minor irritant, but still irritating nonetheless. The BudFits from Innovelis solves this problem as described.

Constructed of soft, flexible rubber, BudFits snap onto Apple earbuds and then wrap over the top of the ear. In doing so, they ensure iPod and iPhone earbuds will not fall out and also maximize user comfort by eliminating the need to wedge earbuds into the ear canal to keep the earbuds in place. BudFits quickly snap onto earbuds to provide extra support and comfort, yet they can be easily removed for times when extra support and comfort is not necessary.

BudFits are compatible with all iPod and iPhone earbuds made by Apple, and prices hover between the affordable $8.99 to $9.99 range.

Survey Says 70% Of iPhone Apps To Be Free

June 11th, 2008 by AndrewD in Apple News, Mobile Phones, Tech News

We’re so psyched for Apple and announcements that a slightly frail looking Steve Jobs’ made at WWDC. Not only is the new 3G iPhone coming to 70 new countries in the coming months, including the UK and Canada, but Apple will be launching their App Store both native on the device and through iTunes.

Wall Street analyst Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray conducted a poll on the floor of WWDC and has come to the conclusion that signs suggest that as much as 70% of the planned applications for the App Store might be available for the price of… free!
