The Canon VIXIA G20 is a camcorder for every event

We as a society have become very reliant on our smartphones. They have our schedule, address book that we no longer try to remember the numbers of, videos, and photos in ample supply. When you want to record an event or outing though, you’re likely going to be sorely disappointed in the results of your phone’s capabilities. Not many people think of buying a camcorder anymore, but for those who need to make videos of better quality than an iPhone, wading through the options can be a bit mind-boggling.

Usually when you’re at the point of looking for a camcorder, you need something that’s going to do some high-quality work regardless of whether or not you have your own lighting crew. If you want something that’s going to give you a sharp image whether it’s day or night, the Canon VIXIA G20 seems like it’s up to the challenge. It sports a 1/3” CMOS Pro sensor with a 10x HD video lens. You are limited to a default 1080/60i setting, but that doesn’t mean the video won’t look professional to an untrained eye. It’s said to have excellent color reproduction and the ability to capture fine details as well as focus selectivity.

There’s a 3.5” flip-out LCD touchscreen which is likely to be less impressive than the capabilities of your smartphone’s, but it will still get you to where you need to go to fiddle with the settings. The G20 has 32GB built-in flash memory with two additional SD card slots for extra storage, which will make event filming much easier to deal with. The battery is going to last you approximately 111 minutes, which isn’t as great as one would hope, but should be enough for the good bits. This is no small buy at $729, but will hopefully make any videos you shoot look much better.
