Alibaba Cloud has officially launched its first Global AI Competency Center in Singapore, marking a strategic leap in its long-standing ambition to lead enterprise AI adoption across Asia and beyond.

This new hub, which is designed to support over 5,000 businesses and equip 100,000 developers worldwide, represents the culmination of nearly a decade of calculated investment in regional infrastructure and technological advancement.

The AI Global Competency Center (AIGCC) is set to become a vital part of Alibaba Cloud’s growing international presence. It will provide developers and businesses with access to cutting-edge tools, enhanced cloud capabilities, and tailored support to deploy large language models and other AI applications.

To further address the global shortage of skilled AI professionals, Alibaba Cloud has also pledged to collaborate with more than 120 universities around the world. Through these partnerships, the company aims to train 100,000 AI professionals every year, strengthening the pipeline of talent needed to meet the surging demand for AI integration in business processes.

Singapore solidifies its role as Alibaba’s AI launchpad

The decision to base the first AI competency center in Singapore is no coincidence. Since 2016, Alibaba has consistently deepened its regional roots in Southeast Asia, notably through its $2 billion investment in Lazada and the early rollout of data centers in Indonesia. This long-view strategy has positioned the company to respond swiftly to evolving digital needs in one of the fastest-growing tech regions globally.

Alibaba’s emphasis on hyper-localized operations has allowed it to offer custom-fit solutions to diverse markets, from using Vietnam’s postal network for returns to leveraging 7-Eleven lockers in Malaysia for e-commerce deliveries. This agile infrastructure has now become the bedrock on which its AI aspirations are built.

AI maturity remains a global challenge Alibaba seeks to solve

According to recent industry insights, only a small fraction of enterprises consider themselves truly mature in AI adoption. Alibaba’s AIGCC intends to close that gap by giving enterprises the tools and guidance they need to effectively integrate AI into their operations. The company also plans to roll out more than ten AI-powered agents across industries, offering practical, human-in-the-loop solutions that boost productivity without aiming for full automation.

By targeting both technical support and talent development, Alibaba is positioning itself as not just a service provider but a long-term partner for digital transformation.

Cloud expansion efforts reinforce global AI infrastructure strategy

The Singapore launch coincides with Alibaba Cloud’s announcement of new data centers in Malaysia and the Philippines. These are part of a broader three-year plan tied to a massive $53 billion investment earmarked for AI and cloud growth. The infrastructure upgrades come at a time when AI processing demands are rapidly rising, placing new pressure on cloud capabilities across the globe.

Although these advancements are contributing to improved performance in both cloud and ecommerce sectors, they are not without cost. The escalating expense of developing and running AI systems is weighing on Alibaba’s profit margins, reflecting a broader industry trend.
