JakPak could be the essential camping tool

by Edwin

jakpakLove the great outdoors? Then you will probably find the JakPak to be a potentially essential piece of camping gear, as it brings three functions in a single form factor. The JakPak has your back covered when it comes to shelter, sleep and clothing, where it can transform into a sleeping bag and a jacket when the situation calls for it. Apart from that, you will also be happy to know that the JakPak is made from waterproof fabric which is coated with urethane, helping make it lightweight and durable. The use of Velcro-secured chambers enables the JakPak jacket to switch modes and transform into a shelter. No word on pricing, but it ought to hit the market sometime this March.

cranejumper: the phrase you are looking for is, “or so I’ve heard” :)
The item looks interesting, but it is a bivvy, not a sleeping bag (it provides waterproofing, it is not insulated) and it is 3 pounds. I think they are correct in aiming it at disaster response, and not at the Ultra-Light camping crowd. The jacket is waterproof, so you would still need a back pack to take it off in warm weather. Once you have a backpack, well… a sil nylon 1 person tent is only 1 pound.

Yeah, it shouldn’t be marketed as a sleeping bag. Think of those poor, clueless, first-time campers who are going to buy it and attempt to use it in chilly britain! I would rather carry a tent to be honest, although this would be good in an emergency, it’s not THAT lightweight and small. You’d be just as well taking a tent and in case of emergency using it as a bivvy bag rather than erecting it entirely.
