Cocoon lets you grow meat

by Mark R in Conceptual Gadgets, Kitchen Gadgets

500x_cocoonElectrolux recently sponsored a design contest, and this Cocoon was the winner. You might be wondering what it is, it is a cooker that can “grow” meat and fish by heating animal cells.

Yes, that does sound like something from science fiction, and it probably will stay that way at this point. The Cocoon is planned to heat pre-mixed food packets containing muscle cells, oxygen, and other nutrients to grow meat, which sounds like Jetsons-style technology. That, or the Black and Decker Rehydrator from Back to the Future II.

I mean, what is that, Salmon? I just had some salmon last weekend that was caught fresh, and it was a complicated process of getting it. I suppose if I could just shove a packet in this guy, it would be better.

I believe that many people are calling this product “controversial”, but I don’t really see the fuss. Unless there is some cloning involved, then I think the only people who should be offended are vegetarians. Of course, I’m not looking forward to the day when Soylent Green is available.

Rickard Hederstierna is the designer of this product, and he has won a huge cash prize and a chance to work a six month paid internship at the Electrolux design center.

Actually, a lot of vegetarians are really looking forward to this being mainstream. I’ve seen more of the “don’t play God” folks who have a problem with it.

I think it’s kind of disturbing… but offensive? No.

OK, so what was the last earth shattering product you bought from Electrolux ????? Yes, I thought so!

Desperately seeking attention, wasn’t that a film with Madonna?
