Space Foosball makes popular stand up game digital
by Mark R
Every time I think the word “foosball”, what comes to mind are semi-pleasant memories from Junior High School. Our lunchroom had about four of these tables out, and each of them had at least one player missing.
It would appear that no game is out of the digital realm as the Ewha Women’s University has created Space Foosball. As you can see from the picture, all the men are rendered in CG, so there is no chance of them breaking off after too much playing.
The handles are made with infrared sensors so they will move out, in, and spin as the user reacts. I would imagine the program would keep track of the force exerted on the ball, so it would know how much to rebound. You can watch the video after the jump for some virtual foosball action.
I think it is interesting to see what they did with the foosball players, but I think a 3-D effect is much better. Space Foosball begs the question if there are games that we shouldn’t make electronic, such as tiddly-winks or shuffleboard. I mean, just because you can make an electronic game out of something, doesn’t mean that you should.
And the name…Space Foosball? Is that the best you could come up with? What does space have to do with it? Maybe you the reader can come up with a better name.
