We already have self scan check out stations and what I've learned is that what takes me 5 minutes to scan the checkers can scan in 1 minute. Can you imagine that poor old 80 year old lady in the middle of the isle trying to read this thing?
What happened to the microchips placed on everything so when you walk past check out everything is scanned at once and your card automatically debited. That's what I want to see!

Picasso - too many reasons why cart mounted devices are not proving to be successful - pilots have been expensive and the installation costs are very high..that apart, customers tend to leave the carts anywhere outside the stores (device -theft is an issue)- hundreds and hundreds of carts are lost each year.
Next, integration with the traditional pos and inventory management solutions is not only a hassle but very expensive.
Not all customers are at ease with this kind of technology.. customers are not very convenient swiping their cards on devices which are immediately used by other customers(not store associates)so, demographics plays a huge role.
Then any kind of weather change - rain for instance can ruin the device on the cart!!!!

I love these, we have had them in CT for a while now. They also added stations by the vegetables to weigh them yourself and print a barcode, which you can scan with this device. The scanner also notifies you of any promotional deals going on/savings. and one really cool part is that if you put a deli order in on the touchscreen stands, as soon as it's ready, the scanner will let you know your order is ready to be picked up, even before they announce it on the intercom.
