Dolphin 9900 gets a grip on things

by Edwin in Mobile Phones

Think you’ve got a pretty cool smartphone to show off to your friends? Honeywell is going to put you in your place with this pistol-like Dolphin 9950 smartphone which is powered by Windows Mobile 6.0 (don’t ask me why they haven’t moved on to Windows Mobile 6.1 yet after all this while), complete with a bunch of specifications that won’t get outdated too soon. Just in case you haven’t noticed, the unconventional design isn’t exactly meant to make it into the mainstream consumer consciousness, as the integrated pistol grip makes it confined to harsh working environments that require a tough piece of hardware which is able to withstand the use (and abuse) of everyday work. More details on its specifications right after the jump.

Just how tough is the Dolphin 9950? Well, Honeywell claims that it is definitely no Humpty Dumpty, capable of withstanding multiple five-foot drops onto concrete as well as over 2,000 three-foot tumbles. We’re not too sure how they arrived at that conclusion, but we just can’t help thinking that Honeywell employed somebody to actually do that same drop for more than 2,000 times until something gives, and we don’t think it is the Dolphin 9950. Not only that, the 9950 also meets IP64 standards for dust and moisture resistance, making this one tough mother. Features of the Dolphin 9950 include :-

  • Marvell PXA270 624MHz processor
  • 256MB RAM
  • 1GB flash memory
  • SD memory card slot
  • 3.5″ QVGA TFT touchscreen display at 240 x 320 resolution
  • 43-key shifted alphanumeric keyboard
  • GPS navigation
  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz), GSM release 99, EDGE multi-slot class 12, PRS multi-slot class 12
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • 802.11b/g support
  • Barcode scanner
  • IrDA
  • Internal speaker, microphone, headset jack

This will be a bulky handset, which does help in housing a 2500mAh lithium-ion battery that boasts a whopping ten-hour battery life. It will probably outlast humans without special clothing by withstanding a wide temperature range between -10 to 50 degrees Celsius. There is no word on pricing as at press time, but it ought to be readily available for various industries to equip their workers with a rockin’ tough handset.
