NXP launches fastest cellular modem
by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets
NXP Semiconductors holds the distinction of having the fastest cellular modem in the world - known as the Nexperia Cellular System Solution PNX6910. This new device will be powered by NXP’s Embedded Vector Processor (EVP) with a powerful Digital Signal Processing core, making the PNX6910 capable of achieving data transfer rates of 150 Mbits downlink and 50 Mbits uplink while supporting multi-mode LTE/HSPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS/GSM capability. As a consumer, you will benefit from an enhanced user experience for next-generation mobile devices such as delivering ultra-fast Internet browsing, streaming video services, multi-player gaming and even full length HD films. I’m a bit skeptical about full length HD films though, as theoretical figures bandied about by marketing firms often fail to live up to the real deal in reality.
NXP claims that their Nexperia Cellular System Solution PNX6910 is so fast, it can download an entire HD movie in less than 7 minutes. That’s a pretty serious figure when you think of the file magnitude, and being more than twenty times faster than today’s HSPA Cat 8 devices at 7.2 Mbps, it is a sterling achievement. The PNX6910’s use won’t be confined to just cell phones, but has also been optimized for a wide range of consumer electronics by bringing broadband connectivity to digital still and video cameras, next generation laptops, Internet tablets and ultra-mobile PCs.
The first market that NXP has selected the first implementation of a multi-mode baseband processor will be LTE, and it is hoped that this new release will gain wide acceptance thanks to a broad market support in the mobile industry as well as the proliferation of GSM standards worldwide. According to a high ranking NXP executive, “The PNX6910 will enable OEMs to develop their next-generation products quickly during the critical ramp-up phase of the technology, enabling faster time-to-market and better performance.” All in all, what is now the world’s fastest cellular modem - the NXP Nexperia Cellular System Solution PNX6910 will be available sometime in Q2 2009.

June 14th, 2008 at 9:00 amWhat’s the sense of a 150 MBit HSDPA/UMTS Modem??? For example in Austria HSDPA speeds are ~7 MBit - and the data cards also offer this speed…
150 MBit is not even possible according to the UMTS standard
