Solar Powered Golf Cart

June 10th, 2008 by Edwin in Miscellaneous Gadgets

Golf isn’t exactly the greenest sport (and I ain’t talking about the color of the grass either) in the world, what with the tremendous amount of upkeep the courses need. In addition, traveling in a golf cart often adds to the pollution problem - thankfully there are inventions like this Solar Powered Golf Cart.

This is the electric golf cart that has an array of 72 photovoltaic cells built into the roof that collect solar energy, providing up to 33% more range between recharges than non-solar electric golf carts. The carts 160-watt array produces up to three amps per hour for its 48-volt rechargeable battery system, providing a range of up to 49 miles approximately 10 rounds of golf before requiring a full recharge (overnight via its 6′ long AC adapter; 15 hours via its solar array). The array also extends the life of the battery system by 60% more than other electric golf carts. Its 5 1/2-hp electric motor and 19-spline rear axle provides a maximum speed of 24 MPH and is powerful enough to enable the cart to climb a 28 incline when fully loaded with two passengers and golf bags, supporting up to 755 lbs. The cart uses rack and pinion steering, leaf springs, and heavy shock suspension to provide a smooth, even ride on its rugged 8″ pneumatic tires. A built-in speed controller allows you to limit the maximum speed, and its self-adjusting drum brakes provide reliable stopping. Includes a two-person seat with vinyl upholstery, four cup holders, and straps for securing two golf bags. The cart has headlights, turn indicators, brake lights, and a horn.

Sounds like the dream way to get around the greens without raising the ire of Greenpeace activists? Only if you have $9,000 to spare.

You can convert your existing golf cart to solar power for a faction of the cost of buying a new cart. For $1,895, you can add a solar roof panel to your Club Car or E-Z-GO cart. For every hour and three quarters that the cart sits in peak sun, it will drive one mile. Using solar rather than fossil fuel power on the golf cart reduces the CO2 released into the air by 452 pounds per year. Check us out at http://www.frugaldougalsgolf.com/solarroofpanel
