Users experiencing issues with SP3

May 12th, 2008 by Chris in Software, Tech News

Windows XP

I have several computers in my house, most of which run Windows XP. With the release of the third and final service pack for the OS, I did what I always do, which was absolutely nothing. I did not download the new data, but merely sat back, content with the way my computers were running; waiting to see what damage would be caused by the update. Apparently there has been plenty of damage done.

There have been a large amount of users indicating issues with SP3. Anything from driver issues, software problems to even system crashes. My advice to those experiencing these issues is to uninstall the service pack and be content with the way your computer was before. There’s really no rush to install something like this right away, as there are generally issues that need to be worked out.

Ironically, Service Pack 3 was delayed because of incompatibility issues. Glad to see that Microsoft got all of those out before releasing the update to the public.

Actually a lot of the damage of computers not booting after SP3 install is a direct result of the OEMs using the same base image for AMD and Intel based systems. After install of the SP it defaults to using the power management driver for Intel therefore having issues on AMD systems. Maybe if Dell and HP didn’t use the same image across multiple hardware configurations half of these problems wouldn’t have happened.

Maybe it’s looming, waiting for me to say this, but so far on 12 machines I’ve had absolutely no issues.

In fact, all I’ve noticed is an impressive speed increase.

Mine would not reboot after SP3 installation. At all. A circle jerk. I had to completely take the system back to original shape, restore my most recent True Image backup (thankyougod). I immediately turned off automatic update because I read that it is coming to all our PCs with the automatic updates this week. So? Now what? Forever I never update my XP from Microsoft?

I usually do like you. Sit back and wait. But this time I took the risk. And I have to say so far I haven’t got any problem. Knock on wood. And like mike I have also noticed a speed increase

i recently formatted my computer and i installed XP w/ a SP3 slip-disk. I had some trouble with getting my data off of my external HD and didn’t really notice the effect SP3 was having on my comp. I’ve noticed that explorer.exe crashes alot i even had my first BSOD. Now i am fairly computer savy, i’ve taken many computer courses and school and i do tech support at work. I took pride in the fact that my computer was always a well oiled machine, but with SP3 this is not the case. I generally recommend that format your computer as opposed to uninstalling SP3, uninstalling service packs can cause as many (or more) issues than the service pack in the first place. If anyone else had/has the same problem please post.
