AT&T lets you forgo the purchase of a new phone with your contract
January 23rd, 2008 by Chris in Mobile Phones, Tech News
Over the last few years people have been able to unlock more and more mobile phones. By unlocking I of course mean they enter a special code into their phone to make it work any any network (so long as it uses the same wireless standard). So when you get your hands on one of these precious phones and decide to tie yourself to the mobile phone network of choice, you’re still forced to get a phone, even though you don’t need it. Well AT&T has finally realized that some people would actually like to sign up for a plan without buying a phone, so they’re offering a SIM-only option.
If you take them up on this offer, you’ll still be able to sign up for any of their plans (including the pre-paid option). It looks like they are charging you $10 (minus a $5 discount) for just the SIM card. This actually confuses me just a bit. When I go to AT&T’s page I count no less than 18 free phones that I can get when I sign up for a 2-year contract. Why would I pay $5 for them to not send me a phone? Honestly I’d take the free phone and set it on the shelf in case something ever happens to mine, or be nice and give someone a free RAZR V3 to replace their old battered phone.

January 23rd, 2008 at 11:06 amSince I just signed up for AT&T on Monday, I can tell you that this does NOT apply to their bundle packages. You have to buy a $100 phone if you want a bundle. The free phones are if you are ONLY signing up for a wireless plan ![]()
