This Tea Picked By A Bunch Of Monkeys…Seriously!
Now I enjoy a good cup of tea, I even have teapots and loose leaf to put into my ingenuiTEA pot from Adagio Tea (which is an awesome gadget in its own right!). But there are just some things that defy reason but you can’t help but love.
A prime example of this is the Monkey Picked Tea being sold over at ThinkGeek. There is a legend that says that over ten centuries ago, upon seeing his master pick tea leaves, a monkey climbed up and collected the leaves and brought them down for his master. Whether it be legend or simply a cheaper form of labor, the story has turned into a rare product that you can purchase and enjoy.
Monkey Picked Tea is a rare tea that is carefully picked by specially trained monkeys in a remote mountain region of China. It is claimed that none of the monkeys are mistreated or harmed in this process. They say that the monkeys are treated as respected members of their family. A quote from ThinkGeek:

I don’t care how the tea is picked, if it is good, I’m all for it! Quite an interesting story though.

Monkey picked tea is an Oolong tea that is most certainly NOT picked by monkeys. But I guess some people will believe anything. Now if you’ll excuse me, my parrot is done making my omelett.

Monkey picked teas are excellent teas. They are certainly not monkey picked any more, and it is unlikely that any tea was monkey picked as a standard way of harvesting the tea. It is a funny thought about a bizarrely named tea.

I’ve actually had monkey-picked tea at Ruby Foo’s in NYC, and it is quite good. I’m waiting for Starbucks to start selling monkey-picked espresso.
