Microsoft considers offering a Blu-ray player for the Xbox 360
It’s no secret that Microsoft has been a big supporter of the HD DVD camp. The best example is the HD DVD player add-on for the Xbox 360. While it’s not something that comes standard with every system (unlike Sony’s PS3 which has a Blu-ray player in every console) they have chosen to offer only the HD DVD player, and providing no support for its competitor. This however, may change in the future.
As much as I’d like to pass this off as speculation, Albert Penello, group marketing manager for Xbox hardware has officially stated that they will consider offering a Blu-ray player add-on for the console. When asked if they would offer such a device, he said “It should be consumer choice; and if that’s the way they vote, that’s something we’ll have to consider.”
This comes after the announcement that Warner Bros. would offer their HD titles exclusively on the Blu-ray format. Rumors were also flying that Paramount would follow suit, however, Paramount stated that they would be sticking with the HD DVD camp. While some may say that the war is over, I’m still going to hold out for an official victory.
