Maybe they were very sleepy... Also, assuming the train didn't arrive too soon after he ended up there, I'm sure (unless it was a 4x4 or something) that they could've managed to position the car to get off the tracks in time! And if you can't roll it/lever it up a bit by yourself, there must be someone else who can help nearby...
